Ate those for 6 months at our outpost in Iraq. Most were pretty good, but no one would even touch the veggie omelet. We had an entire pallet of boxes with only the veggie omelet left over. We would have rather starved. The ravioli, cheese tortellini, and chicken with salsa were my favorites. People would get pretty creative with them to make custom things, like Ranger Apple Crumble, using pieces from different meals. All you need is the spiced apples, creamer powder, and oatmeal cookie.

Sounds like waste. I purposely ate the veggie omelettes as a psychological ploy. I planted the seed that it was my favorite. Turns out, from pogs to grunts to snake eaters it doesn't matter that you are willing to eat their throwaways. It just matters to them that they aren't. Bunch of selfish pricks. They're all gone one way or another. Every so often I'll still hear someone tell a story about this one guy who only ate veggie omelettes and pork rib MRE's. I never tell them it was me. I just smile knowing that the seed that was planted all those years ago has grown like a weed and festered in people's minds who are five generations removed.

We used to say MREs were three lies for the price of one, not a meal, not ready and not fit to eat. But they were better than the Vietnam era 4 choices, including Ham and Lima Beans nobody wanted. And I think the one in the video is better than the ones we had 20 years ago. (I ate as a hunter, was not military.) We had a darker hard cracker and it always had either cheese or peanut butter with it. It was always enough carbs, protein and fat but sometimes lacking in vegetables and vitamins. But, they were never designed to be the only thing a soldier ate for long periods. (They got used that way anyway sometimes.) We had two heat packs, large and small, for entrée and side dish, and maybe a smaller one for hot beverage. But we learned you could heat the entrée and then take it out and put the side dish in the same pouch, didn't need the second one. Faster and easier.

Those "crackers" reminded me of Civil War "Hard Tack" ... but probably tasted better, especially since they didn't come with wevils. You should try the vegetarian taco ... that is completely different kind of fare. The heating up process didn't seem to go as well as other's I've seen, which actually had steam rising off of them.
@DamonNomad822 жыл бұрын
Having tried both the MRE "crackers" and hardtack (though to be fair, it was homemade hardtack, not Civil War era stuff and thus lacked the extra "flavor" that weevils would have added), I would say the hardtack tasted much better, but was also much harder to chew. The MRE "crackers" closely resembled an unsweetened Pop Tart with no filling.

I ate the earliest versions in Vietnam in 1969, when we transitioned from C-Rations to MREs in the infantry. I much preferred C-Rats, but the advantage to MREs was that they were lightweight, since you added water to bulk them up. Trouble is, we had to carry our own water, and drinking water was too precious to blow on moistening MREs. Plus, adding just the right amount of water could be problematic; the food would be too crunchy without sufficient water, or too mushy with too much water. For me, C’s were more appetizing. But, when I returned to college, straight from Vietnam in early ‘70, I had to economize on meals. So, I wrote to the manufacturer and asked for a quote for case-lots of MREs to get me through college (this being way before they were available to the general public). They wrote back that they didn’t do any retail business, only military contracts in bulk volume. But, they said, if I reeeally liked them that much, they’d make an exception in my case, and they quoted me a price by the case. I forget what their quote was, 50-odd years later, but I think it worked out to a buck or two per meal, in ‘70 money. I never followed up, having quickly acclimated to normal human food, but I almost took them up on it.

I’m a bit younger than you but I soldiered in the Rhodesian bush in the late 1970’s in Matabeleland during the civil war. (It wasn’t that civil.) we had ration boxes known as rat packs which by today’s standards were quite primitive. I think they were made under contract in South Africa. All in all they weren’t too bad and accomplished the mission of keeping us alive and fortunately they varied so we were able to trade between ourselves. Good luck and long life!

Very interesting. I love the new format of non-mousetrap content. I can't say I'm a fan of all this plastic, but this sounds ideal for a military emergency survival backup. How does the heating work, an alkali metal? For campers though, I honestly think a bit of forward planning and a little effort could avoid the need. After all, walking and eating is all you have to do all day.
@DaleStLouis-xb5mx2 жыл бұрын
It may vary, but yes, the ones I was familiar with had powdered magnesium, iron and sodium. They heated very hot, capable of steam burn if you opened it carelessly. I heard stories from Vietnam soldiers, who's "C Rations" came with some heat source that was less effective. They often pinched a bit of C4 plastic explosive from a claymore bomb, and heated with that.
