I find always surprising how polite your daughter is, it is total OK for her not to like something, yet she always try to be polite and say that she did like. As for corn, here we a good amount of very sweet corn things. Cakes, pamonha and curao (not much of a translation as they're names), corn juice, ice cream and probably a good bunch of other sweet corn stuff. Thanks for Alduin and for you, it was a great video!!!

She's a real delight to take anywhere for dinner. Never any awkward "Eww, yuck!" moments ;-) The whole 'corn as a dessert item' thing is really growing on me too.

Good review. I like this menu for sure. The only improvement I would have requested would have been a syrup packet or two for the waffles.

santamanone Cheers. I think we were already pushing the calorie boundaries for a single meal ration. A packet or two of syrup may have taken us from lunch firmly into siesta territory! Lol.

Kiwi Dude You should try the packets of instant grits. Not as good as real grits of course (knda like comparing the instant oatmeal to real oatmeal) but it's satisfactory for the purpose.

The Boss seems to be developing a more discerning taste (perhaps due to the amazing range of rations from all over the world that she's tried out?). It was somewhat shocking to see her say that there were TWO things in this one that she didn't like (didn't find "Yummy"). Having tried the Adobo Rice myself I thought it was quite good--and even somewhat sweet in its flavor. Would have thought she'd go for that, but maybe the texture/consistency was a turn-off? Oh well, you can't like EVERYTHING, right? Great review mate!
@KiwiDudeMRE
@KiwiDudeMRE 9 жыл бұрын
gschultz9 I think I'm getting more tuned into her 'cues' when she's not into something. Her initial reaction is typically polite, but when she moves on quickly after a small nibble - there's more to it ;-) I really enjoyed everything in this ration. Alduin must've put quite a bit of thought into it. Cheers mate.

Tocino is actually a sweet pork, made in the Philippines of course.
@SparkRattle
@SparkRattle 9 жыл бұрын
I feel inclined to explain a few things here given that I'm Filipino and most of the products, if not all, are actually Philippine made. Firstly, "ulam" isn't really the side dish but rather the main course and it's commonly paired with rice. However, to boost the calorie content of the MRE, he added adobo rice instead. It's not exactly wrong as it's similar to fried rice in a way though Adobo, just like tocino (which is glazed pork by the way), is an ulam or main course. It's just that it's become popular in our culture to mix it with the rice into a sort of fried rice. It's for convenience and for giving you a more exciting way of having your rice instead of the plain old steamed or boiled variant. Now, regarding the "Ulaaammmmm" pack included in the MRE, it should be duly noted that this is not how tocino should look but it's a cheap way of getting a quick meal set up on the go. It;s also good to eat without heating and I admit making this a part of my lunch pack to work every day. There are several variants too, actually, but they are all saucy to give flavor to the rice. There is a similar brand which is better but sadly it comes in a can and it might not be suggested for making or adding to an MRE. But the kit he put together is good. It's basically the same with my daily pack here. Edit: I forgot to mention that the outmeal with corn has coconut milk in it which gives it that creamy flavor. And Adobo is basically like chinese 5 spice but adobo is more of a stew than anything.

So the Ulammm is the brand name, what it is in the pack is called instant Tocino, which is like a pork belly stewed in a bbq type sauce, sometimes it's spicy, sometimes it's sweet. But the dish itself is called Tocino (toe-see-no)

Tocino is sweetened bacon in the Philippines. it's actually better if you get it in whole bits and pieces. Ulam in the Filipino language has no direct translation. But it can be meant as a viand for your side dish (Y)

I'll second what gschultz said: the Boss is becoming a bit more discerning -- or perhaps more honest. Going back over several reviews, I think it's a texture issue; she doesn't care for gooey, "slimy" foods. That pork side would be great on noodles, too.

I LIKE TURTLEZ Most of the U.S. MRE's that I've purchased have come from eBay. It can work out fairly economical if you purchase by the case. You can get singles, but the shipping is often more than the ration itself. If you're in the U.S. the options are greater (Army surplus stores etc..)

.."If" you were packing a home made kit away for a camping trip or less than a yr, you could probably put together your own "MRE". The problem with homemade is storage life and nutrient/ caloric value. With emergency food sources that caloric and nutrient levels are paramount to health and survival....

Asian food is so different from what im custom to. Oatmeal with corn, like what in the world. Then you have what looks to be low quality meat in oil (?) and the main dish looks like something you'd find on a moldy cheese. But the best part is, I'd probably love it all. Something about asian food gets me...some might even say it hits me right in the belly...yeah that was a reach my bad.
