i have seen it done... in an edible form.... but this is not food...this is...something you could use to ward off rats... note: the way i think they got the ones we had that turned out to be pretty good was by erradiating them so, nothing inside was alive to grow,rather then the chemical method i seem to remember these used.... thats... a bit...disturbing... "you could live off of it, but, would you want to" is also a good question ;)

@@KiwiDudeMRE if you add a bit of salt to the water, even old mre heaters will often kick off amazingly... a buddies father gave us a big bag of the heaters and said "Be careful, have fun" and... salt water..well you can have some fun with a stack of those and salt water..., we used a large glass water jug, in the middle of a kiddy pool, with the heaters... managed to get that thing so warm it was like bath water, only used like 6 heaters into the salt water in the glass bottle..... major steam came out of the salt water for over and hour and hours later it was still hot enough you couldnt pickup the glass jug with your hands....my mother was upset at first then... "oh thats nice and warm" added some epsoms salt and used it lkke a hot tub for the night...wasnt bad.... was fun... his father had suggested the salt water thing... we took it to an extreme... we did sat the glad jub on a folded towel in the pool... i was more putting it in the pool in case it boiledover or something...when we realized it was going to warm the pool if it got warm enough but not boil over... we added 2 more.... i miss those days...weird shit friends/friends fathers/random people would say "here, have fun" ....

I'm thinking that most soldiers would want a substantial breakfast, especially if they are off base and working hard. I dont see the need for trying to replicate an omelette, which even when made fresh can be horrible if not made correctly. Personally, I think they'd be better off just serving a lighter spiced meal like chicken with a sauce or a pasta than badly executed "breakfast foods". Whoever greenlit this omelette idea should have been shot for treason.
@kevinmoore29299 жыл бұрын
+Samidela idela when in was in, if the mission didn't start before breakfast, we loaded up our tray when possible. If we were off base overnight, then it was this or pogey bait if we could get some. nowadays, if you are in a friendly area, you can go out on the economy and get fresh food and just cook for your squad, platoon, etc. thanks to the cutbacks, more troops are turning to the local option when they can.

had one that was scrambled eggs with bacon and cheese, not an "mre" but something a friends father bought that was similar, survival food, those turned out to be some of the best ones actually though, they erradiated the egg packets rather then using alot of chemicals so.. it didnt taste like a lab expairment...but like fast food scrambled eggs... (no joke, toss them in boiling watter for a few, then put the packets in your pockets and move around a bit, sit on them, flex them, then just split the end and either eat out of the packet or put it on a plate/in a bowl/cup, they made really great egg sandwitches using toast made over the fire... even his dad was blown away, ended up buying several cases of that kit because, it was just a good meal and, he would use the egg packets to make himself food on the way to work.. wrap it and some other stuff in a container he would put on the engine of his truck, by the time he was at work ready to go in and have coffe and breakfast... it was hot... this mre.. by all accounts, even the most brave and insane of my friends who have had it... itsa horror show... some weird enough didnt taste as bad others...you could smell the chemicals..... they would often just dump those in the bushes.... if it killed the bushes.... (not sure if that was a joke but...3 of them have said it...lol..) the rest of these, outside the eggs... are im told, quite passable, and if you hd a guy who liked the vomlet, you could often trade for something edible, i gather one fellow in a buddies unit once ate 12 vomlets in one sitting.. then...spent the next 12hrs in the head on the ship they had boarded after breakfast....not throwing up... but... blowing out... no thanks...i would rather just eat crackers...

Kiwi Dude Salsa Verde is way better than Tobasco! Though here Salsa Verde isn't that common, too easy to confuse with "Green Chili" which is a local hispanic specialty. It's a spicy Pork Stew that's generally used to smother other foods like Burritos. So the only places to get stuff like Salsa verde are non-local mexican restaurants.

I am quite surprised you had the cojones to try this one in particular. Most US MREs, you can eat the entree by itself (and some you can eat at room temp), but the omelet DEMANDS the presence of the Salsa. I found, in my time, that the Cappucino tasted even better if you mixed some of the Apple Cider mix in with it. I also find it amusing you have your "Rock or Something" so labeled. Additionally, I always found it odd myself they didn't put a coffee in this one. Most of my brothers-in-arms would have just "dipped" the coffee, kind of like tobacco. if it were included. As for the granola - I always ate it dry.

I've got a question and it's been bugging me for a while. What happens if you overfill the water? Does it explode or just doesn't work or something cause I'm very curious about this haha
@FoolishDoug9 жыл бұрын
It's more or less about efficiency and resource management. If you drown the thing in water it's still going to work, less efficiently. That is the reaction will still occur, but it won't heat correctly. If you use too little water it may not have enough to finish it's reaction correctly and may not heat the entree thoroughly. EDIT: Pretty much the do not overfill mark is the average point in which the vast majority of the heater elements will have enough water to function correctly.
@The_Cranky_Painter9 жыл бұрын
I've used a bunch of them over the years, and what FoolishDoug said is correct. If you don't add enough water, you never really get a reaction to start. Too much water, and you don't get enough air into the heater to have a proper reaction either.
@Jaybird1969 жыл бұрын

The cappuccino has coffee in it. So, there wasn't your usual packet of coffee crystals, but it still did have coffee. :)

You're a braver man than i. edit: ok, one thing i never understood mainly because it could be done so easily. Why the hell do FRHs don't have separate pouches? Let's say you'd want to heat up one meal, yeah? You'd pour water in the chemical area, then pour water in the food area. Heat would travel through the water and heat up the meal. Instead you have to deal with this, frankly, clumsy design that doesn't always activate the whole set of pads (and this is in leisure conditions, not in combat or in the field, mind you) you have to wipe it etc etc. I dunno, just doesn't seem right to me. And other types of FRHs seem to confirm that it could be done in other ways. Just my two cents worth of rant.
@Jaybird1969 жыл бұрын
'Mind expanding on what you mean by "separate pouches" ?
@KiwiDudeMRE9 жыл бұрын
aserta I agree. The U.S. FRH is lagging behind these days. I have to say the Korean version takes the cake for ease of use. Self-contained water, rip cord activation, and nothing wet comes into contact with the food.
@aserta9 жыл бұрын
Jaybird196 As you hear it. Separate pouches for the two different actions of the FRH. 1. for the chemical reaction 2. for the food to heated It's incredibly simple to do it. I mean, i've modified my old vacuum sealer to allow me to glue two bags together when i want two meals to "stick around". If i can do that, they could certainly design and make a FRH that would separate the processes.
@aserta9 жыл бұрын
Kiwi Dude The Korean one is brilliant, yeah.

Hello, I think the first give away about the omelet should have been the "Cottage Cheese" in the ingredients? I like cottage cheese but in a sandwich or with crackers I have never cooked it. And I eat most things and am Ex Army so have had a ration pack or dozens

+Kiwi Dude after 30-odd years of eating MREs off and on, I've decided that they add the bad ones on purpose for troops to carry around to give to the enemy after being captured, the Red Cross just hasn't caught on just yet. :-/

If I make a cheese Omelet I use a strong Cheddar or Stilton with a little finely diced Onion. If I have left over cooked Vegetables I will make a Spanish Omelet but never will I use Cottage Cheese in an Omelet. And there is no way to remove it? I was in the British Army many years ago when the Main came in a can and you used an enclosed field Can Opener to open the Can and Re-heated/Cooked it on the Hexamine Burner
@kevinmoore29299 жыл бұрын
+ANDREW CULLEN there was something closer to that in the MCI that morphed into the inedible omelette ham and egg that came in the first MREs. well.... it was only edible with Tabasco and some cheese spread.

MRE foods are the best. My dad was in the army for two years and when he came back he give me my sister and my brothers MRE food. but it was back in 2005 and 2006. I was wondering when you can get them at?
@KiwiDudeMRE9 жыл бұрын
Kayla McNeish eBay is a really good source for U.S. MRE's. If you live in the U.S. there's other options like Army surplus stores, specialise websites etc..

okay thank you. i watch your videos all the time. do you know how much the German's MREs food cost?
@KiwiDudeMRE9 жыл бұрын
An EPA costs about $20 NZD, but the shipping from somewhere like Germany to New Zealand would cost about $50 NZD. It really depends on where you are in the world as to how cheap they can be sourced. Shipping is always the biggest expense.

As far as urban legend goes, I believe that the main course of this MRE, the omelette itself, matches perfectly to what people would think of when they think of MRE's. Not all that good, and looking like regurgitated something. Most MRE's are, or at least look, quite good. People need to remember that soldiers cannot be AFK because of stomachs problems from food as they are needed in the battlefield, so the food may not taste the best but it should never give you stomach problems. That said, I think that MRE's have developed quite a nasty reputation over the years that because they are "food on the go" and aren't in conventional storage, they give you stomach problems. Perhaps past MRE type food stuffs did, but modern MRE's are much more soldier-minded rather than government-minded, where they look at food and make it so soldiers want to eat them and enjoy them to some extent, while still being able to produce and pack them efficiently.

Fun story, we had MRE's the night before a PT test (technically our lunch because it was a night shift class), I was unlucky enough to get Veggie omelette, being a gung ho 18 year old, I figured why not, I'm stud right? Throughout the night and during class I shat my brains out, and when it finally came to the 2 Mile run, I added two and a half minutes.
