There is no drinks because here, in Spain, we drink a lot of water instead of flavored drinks. And about the bread and cracker issue, the soldiers will be provided with those in the field.

you could make a sport drink out of the energy tablets, vitamin c and slat tabs crush them up and dump in some water (good for re-hydration) or in some watered down orange juice or orange drink.

i think you should put those "Vitamine C tablet" in water, its like compressed powder mixture, just maybe. similiar to vitamin c tablet in my country, where some product of vitamin c tablet is that you need to put it in water

Was most interested in this ration. Spanish food competes with French and Italian for best in the world. I would imagine that this was the tastiest MRE of them all.

Kiwi Dude did the A1. It would seem that the Spanish rat pack is 4 course based except for breakfast. Soup, fish, main and dessert. Probably get a wine ration in the evening. Magellans XO who was the first person ever to circumnavigate survived on quince jam. Later died of scurvy when he ran out.

This is a supper meal so you would be given a wine ration to drink. That is why there is no drink mix.

I'm quite surprised with the negative comments about the seafood in MRE. In the country where they eat a lot of fish and sea food what else did you expect? American hamburger? Italian spaghetti? Mexican taco?

+Katbot The ink is used to make a type of sauce that goes really well with rice. Actually, it's a typical dish in Spain ("arroz negro"), rice with a sauce made of squid ink and seafood. Similar to "paella", but with a characteristical black colour :)

The vegetables aren't spinach, they're " Grelos"[In Galicia/Portugal] or Rapini [ In Italy] a vegetable normally only used in the Galician/Portuguesse/italian gastronomy. In the US you named it Broccoli Rabe. I think the quince jam should be eated with the crackers in the pack that you have at the right in the Breakfast video. I'm from Spain and normaly it is eaten with some bread and cheese. The idea behind to the suplement tablets is to use it if you noticed that it's going to be a hard day or, like the Condensed milk, you can carry it in a pocket and when you feel that you need an extra "push" you just use it.

No need to. Water serves its purpose better when not mixed, and at room temp. Water provided to soldiers has no flavour either, so no need to change it to something more pleasing :)

Iñigo Zapata​​ Adding drink power to a ration kit doesn't force soldiers to flavour their water. It just gives them the option to do so. If you've ever relied on army rations for longer than a day or two you'd understand why such little things can make a big difference to morale... Also, a powder containing electrolytes can replenish losses due to sweating from exertion, especially in hot climates.

As always, another great review. While loving most Spanish foods I never did get around to eating squid. I'm sure I could have traded the squid for more beans and ham. Question, Does the ink really add to the flavour? Would it be eaten like a broth or is it just there for packaging?

MrPlusses The ink is like a natural sauce. It would taste just fine in olive oil or some other stock or such. I was disappointed not to have the tentacles. They are tasty too. Cheers

+gundog4314 I'm can't be 100% sure as I never tried an army ration but, usually in cans like that one, tentacles are minced, mixed with some ink, and stuffed inside the squids bodies (I guess that adds some gore for squid haters :-) ).

@@gundog4314 Hi from Spain even if a bit late, xD. You had the tentacles. In this kind of squid, once the interior is cleaned (the guts, beak and such)the tentacles are stuffed inside. Thats why they are not hollow.

If we are talking just "mains" as opposed to a complete meal, just about anything freeze dried that's over 4.8 ounces will require 16 ounces of water. That's over a pound of food. That with a few other sundries makes those "napping" rations for me. LOL!

Your creature at 16:05 is "lacón" (pork's forward leg ham). If you get quince cream again, you should try spreading it on some bread with cheese , specially blue or strong flavoured ones. That's how this cream is usually consumed in northern Spain and might be a new interesting flavour for someone. By the way, you really should heat the stew, It tastes so much better...

Odd that there's no cracker or bread item. I'm struck by the very real chance that somebody might mistake one of the fuel tabs for the energy disks in dim light. Popping a fuel tab would be a memorable taste experience, I bet! Finally, although you didn't show or mention it, I assume you heated the stew and/or the squid (which I would have LOVED, btw)

Rocky Raab I guess if you eat this type of ration often enough you just know through experience and like you said I imagine putting a fuel tab in your mouth on accident once is a steep learning curve. They do have crackers but they are issued separately and will be profiled in my last Spanish ration review in the upcoming months. Stew was heated and super delicious! Cheers Rocky

ChannelSho The tablets are "cold rations" to keep you going for a few hours in case you can't stop to eat. Still, low GI snacks would be better.

That is really not a good method of saving money. When you're out there you're so thankful for a little electrolyte beverage. That powder would run them 2cents max if mass produced.

I normally like seafood, but just the thought of eating/ingesting squid/octopus ink makes me sick. Even if its good for you and its tasty, it looks disgusting. I'm normally not picky about food, but this may be one of the few things on this planet I won't eat (on top of Brussels sprouts and canned peaches)
