I can think of a handful that, whilst covers, are JUST. SO. GOOD! My favourite ear candy of theirs: Come Along; Gold (cover by Kiiara not Spandou Ballet); Sound Of Silence; New Moves x Are You That Somebody; Let’s Get It On & Dog Days Are Over (from the Sing Off competition which jump started their career); Aha… That’s not all of it - their Christmas Album songs have a ton more: Mary Did You Know?; Seasons Of Love; Amazing Grace… I’m looking forward to seeing you react to the whole PTX repertoire - you won’t be able to help yourself, because there sound is not just the sounds they make - it’s how they Upgrade each song that they cover!!! This was, indeed, their first Grammy. For the arrangement. As the first commenter said, Kevin - the Beatboxer - has been there since the beginning. It's the bassist who changed. This was their original bassist, the "new" bassist was Matt from the first video you watched. Mitch, Scott and Kirstin, the three vocalists, grew up together in musical theater and choir in Arlington, TX. They were making their own arrangements and singing as "The Trio" in high school. In 2011 they decided to try for the TV show The Sing-Off and for that they needed 5 members so they found Avi and Kevin. The five of them got together in person for the first time the day before the audition... the rest is history. The Trio were 19 (Mitch skipped his high school graduation), Kevin was 22 and Avi was 21. One song that doesn't ever get requests that I think you'd enjoy is their cover of Jack U and Justin Beiber's Where Are U Now. They got their harmonies so tight at the beginning they sound like the vocoder used in the original. And another that they did amazing things with is Kiiara's Gold. Where the original chorus isn't sung live, but instead sampled vocals played by Kiiara's DJ, Mitch does the effect entirely himself with his insane vocal control - and the official video is sung live. I also stand by my original suggestion of their original "EDM" Love Again. The video was done about the same timeperiod as Daft Punk and there are a lot of similarities in the way they approached it. But they wrote and composed it, themselves, and it's pretty epic.

Daftpunk was done in 2013 and their original Love Again written by Avi and Kevin not until late 2014. You know their "old" bassist. Don't worry though PTX actually has edited out any pictures of Avi singing with them in this their first grammy for their ad for acappella classes. They are erasing him entirely. Pretty petty I think.

Once exposed to PTX, there is no vaccine to help you. You are correct. They are from another planet. No one like them on earth, not even close. It's more than just harmony. Lots of groups can do that. It's the total package that takes them to another level. It was the bass singer that left, but the new guy is just as good in his own way. You just had a life altering moment if this is the first you have heard of them. Every thing they touch is unique in it's own way. Scott, Kirstin, and Mitch sang together as The Trio in high school. They picked up Kevin (beatboxer) and Avi (original bass) to form Pentatonix in 2011. Matt replaced Avi in 2017. They named themselves Pentatonix after the Pentatonic Scale and there are 5 (Penta) band members. They all have Theater or formal training. Kirstin was on Broadway for a bit in Kinky Boots.

Avi-the bass singer often added with the beat boxing. He left the group amicably due to family issues. He was replaced by Matt Sallee, another amazing bass singer. Kevin, the beat boxer is an original member of the group.

Avi, bearded guy who does the bass sounds, left the group in 2017. :( Family needed him, schedule was crazy. He has a solo career now. We love our Avi! Matt replaced him. Another fantastic recommendation is La La Latch, and their upgrade of Gold by Kiiara. The bass (corn rows) Avi Kaplan was in the group until 2017, left for personal reasons, amicably. He was replace by Matt Sallee at that time. No other changes have been made to the group. Mitch and Kirsten change their looks all the time, but still same group other than that one change. They won their first grammy for this in 2015. They have also won grammys in 2016 and 2017 for Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy and Jolene with Dolly Parton. The other members are the beatboxer, Kevin, he also plays cello in a handful of songs WHILE beatboxing. The tenor with dark hair is Mitch and the tallest member is Scott who also does bass while Avi/Matt has a singing part. He has a huge range.

Beatboxer is Kevin, he has been with group since the beginning. Matt Salle took bass roll over in 2017 for Avi (guy with beard.) when Avi had to care for family. Avi is the only change in the groups history all others are still there. "Love Again" an early original is crazy. Yup, scratching themselves! They first did that in the 2011 television competition The Sing-Off, during their cover of Video Killed the Radio Star (you can find that online). Their medleys and mashups are always stellar. Try any of their "Evolution" videos. They do use a little reverb and so on for the videos, but you can find some great live performances as well, to see what they sound like live.

Kevin is the original Beatboxer and he plays the Cello while doing it. Scott was lucky to get Kevin and convince him to join PTX in 2011. Scott helped cover the airfare to get Kevin to LA for the TV show "the sing-off" which they won. Kevin is a BEAST as a person and not just Beatboxing because he graduated from Yale and considering pre-med before his life changed after joining the group. PTX just had their 10th anniversary in June but the original three have been singing for almost 20 years (the reason they blend so well) Scott and Mitch met when they were 10 years old and Mitch had met Kirstin when he was 8. They all did Community Arts Theater from Arlington, Texas. Kevin was from Kentucky though both parents are doctors in Maryland. Kevin sets the tone and he has perfect pitch so everyone tunes to him.

Hi. My name is Victor. And I'm a PENTAHOLIC. Some PTX history: The member who left is Avi (the gent with the beard.) The increasing demands from the bands' success was impacting his well-being. Mitch (dark hair) and Kirsten have known each other since the were 8 years old. They started singing with Scott (white hair) when they went to high school together. The three were introduced to Avi by a mutual friend. They invited Kevin to join after they saw him CelloBoxing on KZbin. They recorded this at Avi's apartment. The audio in his closet. The video in his kitchen. Check out their "Kiss From a Rose" to hear Matt (Avi's replacement,) and to see Kevin flexing his Cello and vocal chops.

Kevin's father is from Nigeria and Kristin's father's family is Mexican (largely first nations I believe). Lots of different musical and cultural backgrounds to make their music interesting.

They really do a great job using left to right sounds. If ya have both ears in stereo, it makes you feel the sound is traveling right through your head. Bohemian rhapsody is an excellent example of the wind sound doing just that

Amazing! Next up: Love Again. It’s another dancefest and an original song of theirs. As a DJ, you’ll love that too! You can’t really choose a ‘bad’ PTX song, in all honesty, but their “evolution of” videos are a great way to see them doing it all live, and in one take. Avi (bearded bass) is the member who left, he and Kevin (beatboxer) were an amazing duo and bounced off each other. Matt replaced Avi and does a very good job in his place.

I love watching the birth of Pentaholics and Home Fries (fans of the acapela group Home Free who are also absurdly talented). Reactions has become one of my favorite things, watching others enjoy the pure talent of these performers just always makes me smile. Scott, Kristen, and Mitch grew up in Arlington, Texas, met as kids (8? 10?) all tried to sing wherever they could, went to the same high school where they did choir and shows. Published KZbins as The Trio. Scott decided to compete in The Singoff but they needed 5. They found Kevin online and Avi through a friend - and had ONE day to get acquainted and won the show. Came with money and a record contract but the label dropped them so they made some KZbin videos and the world found them. Kevin and Avi were fans of Daft Punk so they tried to hire a studio, couldn't, and recorded in a closet and did the video at a kitchen table. Budget was $400 I think. Won them a Grammy. Kevin was premed at Yale, had played cello and sax (?) at Carnegie Hall but they talked him into joining. Imagine telling his folks. Fans (Pentaholics) have put together conventions and invited their folks to come talk and they are adorable!

Mitch, Scott and Kirsten grew up together in Austin. They dang together since they were kids. They did high school musicals and choir. They added Avi and Kevin for the Sing off show. Which they won.

This was their first Grammy for arraignment. They recorded it in the closet of Avi and Kevin's apartment. The contacts were giving Avi problems as you can see by his red eyes. Kevin had an allergic reaction to them. BTW, look into their cover of "Imagine"

Avi was the original Bass, he left in 2017. Matt came on board after that and he is awesome also. They spent $400.00 on this video, and made it in Avi and Kevin's kitchen and closet. They also won their first Grammy for this. Kevin is the only beatboxer. They won the show the Sing Off back in 2011. They have been together for 10 years. You have some catching up to do.. Save some time and just admit it: 'I am a Pentaholic". Welcome and you will enjoy everything. Kirstie has an original solo album. Mitch just released his first EP Messer. Scott has numerous duets with a variety of artists. Kevin has own channel he plays cello and beatbox at the same time. There is also Superfruit which is Scott and Mitch do project. To say they are other worldly talented is an understatement.

In case no one else mentioned it. There is a video of them singing this live with no microphones. Except for the bass and beat-boxing being harder to hear it sounds exactly the same.

After The Sing off where they got their start in season 3 they won a music contract but they were dropped, so they went to KZbin. This was done in their kitchen for 400$ and won them the first grammy.
