Hey Mike, I'm glad you showed what happened after plastering over the Atlas track foam. I was thinking about using it myself. I won't be wasting my time with it now. I'll be putting my scenery directly on the pink foam board. I had no idea the plaster and scenery would crack and crumble like that. Thanks for showing us. I also think your idea of putting the scrap yard, the engine house and car shops at an angle closer to the front of the layout is a great idea. Can't wait to see the changes. Have fun with it.

Hi Mike. I too have a similar problem on my layout and I totally agree with bringing the detailed yard to the front of the layout, so you can view it better. I am also trying to work out the best way to disguise the roundly roundly track. I have a “dog bone” type layout and at one end the round track disappears under scenic but at the other end, like yours, I can’t do that. Thanks for the video and I look forward to seeing your new plan for this section because you are always an inspiration for me. Best wishes, Barry UK.

Hi mike, what about a small hill or cut in the back corner to hide part of the 3 loops? Just small enough to brake up the continuous view of the track. Maybe even add a small hill in the front corner as well which doesn't cover the track. Then the yard area will be more natural looking fitting around the new hills. Just a suggestion. All the best Anthony.

Dear Mike, think you got an excellent point with changing the engine facilities footprint. The ‘former’ aligned configuration with the yard was indeed a bit on the straight side. The way you described the possible uses of the footprint makes the reconfiguration of the area sound like an Inglenook puzzle of its own. Like the idea to position the car shops and the engine house (sort of) perpendicular to the main track directions. Although I’m wondering if the available space would allow for such a tweak. One other thing that may increase the scenic connection of the engine area and the city at the backdrop, is that this tweak may allow space for the now dead end road at the edge of the city to cross the railroad. This might be an interesting idea to consider. Also think that the possible perpendicular placement of the maintenance structures will enhance the perspective over the ‘loop’ into the corner. Overall, I’m just curious as to what you’ll come up with. Am aware that to find the appropriate configuration may take some time. Nevertheless, I’m certain you’ll find the key to the “loop’s” grail, or should that be rail? Cheerio

Looking good Mike! I’m starting to think that putting my structures on a little base sheet would allow me to move them around as I grow tired of the current look.

Making changes on a layout is as common as the sun. What I do is make a template of the buildings I wish to move or adjust from card stock. That way you can see if the vision in your head fits the real-estate you have. Composition of the area is important, IMO it( the layout of building) should move your eyes. Before your scene just ended and the viewer will miss details. Rock on Mike!

I know you're proud of the engine house and car shop but, they 'could' be used as separate buildings adjacent to a 4 to 6 bay round house with a KATO turn table. You could run a track from the turn table to the engine house. This would blend the old with the new, providing a bit of nostalgia for railroading 🙂 Just my $.02 worth 🙂

oh the number of times i've wrestled with tearing out a section because i didn't like something over time. there are three significant times i did that and they were all painful. the end result was always better - but destroying the work and wasting the scenery was rough. plus it disrupted trains for a while and that was truly the worst part!

I knew Mike you were not happy with that area. I also know you do not like ballasting, with that being said I figured you were already thinking change. "Because you did not ballast it" I agree those structures and scenes should be displayed so all can see. Unfortunately, I have no suggestions, yet I know between you and Gavin you guys will come up with it. God Bless!
