As someone who does this for a living.. Be sure that if you’re outside that you have the correct device. Go get yourself a weather resistant GFI receptacle and an outside rated bubble cover to meet code. (If you are replacing something inside you can use regular devices for it) Make sure that you leave yourself 6 or more inches of wire in your box to also meet code. It’s important to know which wire in your box is the line and which is the load. Line is the important one as it brings power to your device. Load is simply the power leaving the device to continue your circuit to other devices. When installing your GFI take a look on the backside of it and find out which screw is going to be your line and which is your load. Hook up the correct ones to the terminal. And land your neutrals the same way. (Black wire to gold screw, white wire to silver screw, green to ground). Be sure to tighten so if you pull on the wire it does not come out.

@randallalt2603 - From the nifty instruction sheet included with my new Leviton GFCI outlet (slim-design with night light built in - perfect for use in bathrooms) - "LINE cable: Delivers power from the service panel (breaker panel or fuse box) to the GFCI. If there is only one cable entering the electrical box, it is the LINE CABLE. This cable should be connected the GFCI's LINE terminals only." ➤ Continuing with the instructions - "LOAD CABLE: This cable delivers power from the GFCI to another receptacle." The diagram shows the LOAD terminal connected to the LINE terminals of another outlet." This way one GFCI can perform its duties of shock protection to several other outlets downstream. In fact, in my house (cheaply done IMHO), the GFCI in the master bathroom is wired to a second outlet in the same bathroom (fine)... but then the builder ran cables from that GFCI to another bathroom way down the hall. ➤ I guess it was done to code, but if somebody in the smaller bathroom manages to trip the GFCI, they will have no clue what happened and will assume they tripped the breaker in the service panel. It is so much easier (and makes more sense) to install a separate GFCI into each bathroom - then the person in that bathroom will hear the 'pop' of the GFCI tripping.
@jobsucks3 жыл бұрын
He left out a very important safety detail about how to properly wire the GFCI outlet. His installation is “end-of-run” or “end-of-line” which mean there’s only one cable inside the box. You have to connect the “line” wires to the “line terminals indicated on the back of the device. If the installation is the first-in-line or even the middle of the run there’s gonna be another cable in the box. The other terminal is the load. The new GFCI outlet will is usually have a yellow sticker protecting the load terminals as seen in the video. This helps indicate to which terminals is line or load.

@SpeakerBuilder4 жыл бұрын
Two problems, first it's a good idea to leave about 6 inches of wire out of the box (that is NEC requirements) that will be folded back into the box, which allows for changes later if a wire breakage occurs, otherwise a broken wire would necessitate routing a new wire run to the box. The other important note is that the top terminals on the GFCI device are to be wired to the live and neutral coming into the box, and the bottom two terminals are reserved for feeding power to a another device that would utilize the GFCI device's protection circuit. So the incoming live and neutral wires must never to connected to the bottom two terminals on the GFCI device.
@nhfoos3 жыл бұрын
This was the information I was hoping to get from the video, thank you!
@SpeakerBuilder3 жыл бұрын
@@nhfoos The other main thing to keep in mind re GFCI devices is that whereas with a normal device you can wire the incoming leads to one set of screws and the outgoing leads (if there is one set as in parallel wiring) to the other set of screws, with a GFCI you should never connect the outgoing leads to the bottom set of screws (unless the specific application calls for all the devices connected to the outgoing leads to be GFCI protected through that GFCI device). Instead, wire the incoming and outgoing leads together and run pigtails off this connection and connect those pigtails to the top GFCI screws. This will allow all devices connected to that circuit to be protected solely by the panel's circuit breaker alone. If any other location in that circuit needs GFCI protection, then a new GFCI device should be installed there. When an entire circuit calls for GFCI protection, then a GFCI circuit breaker can be installed for that circuit in the panel.

@@SpeakerBuilder Great, thank you. I installed 2 gfci outlets, 1 on each bathroom. There was 2 black wires. 2 white and 1 ground. I put black and white wires that had power on the 2 top screws and the other black and white in the bottom screws and outlet was dead. I switched the wires from top to bottom and still dead. I thought I got 2 defective gfci and didn't have power in bathrooms for a month. I just saw your comment and connected the 2 black together with a pigtail on the top gold screw and the 2 whites together on the silver screw and they both work. I was about to call an electrician that charges $75 to fix each. Gracias for sharing your knowledge.
@SpeakerBuilder2 жыл бұрын
@@joaquinsuarez6090 One of the two combinations you described should have powered both GFCI's, so the GFCI's must have been in the tripped mode and would need to be reset. Nonetheless, with the feed wires connected to the top terminals and the send wires connected to the bottom terminals, the GFCI connected downstream would be subject to loss of power anytime the first GFCI was tripped off. So it would still work but not correctly. Both GFCI's should be wired in parallel as you described, so that either one can be tripped off and the other would remain active. Code requires that these be on their own separate circuit in the panel. The confusion about correct wiring of the GFCI's arises because they include two sets of terminals just like outlet devices, which can have each pair of black and white wires connected to the two terminal screws.

After reading all of the comments, I too was able to better understand the video content. I just finished adding an extra gfci outlet for my new jackscrew garage door opener by pulling power from the constant hot side of the attic lights. I drilled through a wall plate and fished the Romex through to a new wall receptacle I installed up high near the new garage door opener. This method saved me some money over running surface mount wire mold from an existing outlet. It also looks like it was original to the house now!

Well, I installed it weatherproof box and all, but, she ain't getting any power out of it! I'm pretty sure I saw my mistake watching your video. I think I attached the wires to the wrong plug as the one you installed had a piece of yellow tape across the one plug connection showing that it's for the feed line to the next outlet if used. What about old installations where you have incoming hot and outgoing load wires. How do you determine which wires are hot/neutral vs load?
@MrFixItDIY2 жыл бұрын
Use a voltage tester. If you disconnect the receptacles wiring, the line in (hot) wire is typically black or red and will have voltage present when the breaker is on. A load wire won't have any voltage unless connected to the line wire. Neutral wires are typically white and also won't have voltage when the device is disconnected. It takes some trial and error and turning the breaker on and off occasionally. The other option is to use a multi-meter but that is more involved.

The best connection is to bend the end of the wires to wrap around the screws. Wrap the wires clockwise around the screws. Make sure the wires are under the heads of the screws. Sticking them in the holes at the back is not the recommended way to connect. If you choose not to bend the wire and do not use the holes at the back, make sure you put each "straight" wire "under" the base where the screws are. Don't over tighten screws. Just snug them down. Remember the white wire goes to the silver screw. The black wire goes to the brass screw. The bare wire goes to the green screw. Test when finished.

That was great! Now...do you have one where you install a GFCI outlet to another outlet (2 hot, 2 neutral, and 2 ground!!)?

Odd question. I'm in the process of changing out receptacles in my house. Our half bath had a GF one that I removed, but when I test the wires with my multimeter BOTH romex's coming to that box are testing hot. (by putting the negative on the white wire and the red on the black, both Romex strands are giving me 120v) The receptacle that was removed had a rear cover on it, with pigtails built into it. Not all of the pigtails were used, so comparing how it was hooked up really does me no good. Do I just cap one set and wire in the other Romex into the Line side of the new GFCI? I'm no electrician, but I don't think pigtailing them together would be wise, since they both must be coming straight from the breaker box.
