I FINALLY watch Stephen King's THE GREEN MILE (1999) for the FIRST TIME! 🌟
Movie Summary:
Paul Edgecomb (Tom Hanks) walked the mile with a variety of cons. He had never encountered someone like John Coffey (Michael Clarke Duncan), a massive black man convicted of brutally killing a pair of young sisters. Coffey had the size and strength to kill anyone, but not the demeanor. Beyond his simple, naive nature and a deathly fear of the dark, Coffey seemed to possess a prodigious, supernatural gift. Paul began to question whether Coffey was truly guilty of murdering the two girls.

It's definitely up there, and we almost all cried when we watched this movie for the first time, so you're not alone. I lost my dad to cancer, so the scene where John heals Melinda broke me too. But I truly understand how John felt when he said he was tired of folks being ugly to each other... the last decade or so has brought out so many people who are like that.

For me the Best Picture nominees were down to this or American Beauty but I wanted The Green Mile to take it home. I wasn’t even around in 99. Also Michael Caine shouldn’t have won Best Supporting Actor. I’m gonna be brutally honest, Haley Joel Osment was better than him and I loved Caine’s performance in The Cider House Rules.

I think that Michael Clarke Duncan was 6'5", big but not a giant, and only about an inch taller than David Morse(Brudal). They used tricks in this to exaggerate his size. If I remember correctly, he died in his early 50s of heart failure.

Somewhere between the 15 -20 mark of your reaction, you got upset at Percy's character AND then stopped to apologize to your viewers for swearing/almost swearing. I never heard anyone else on KZbin ever do that. It just showed that you are a true gentleman in an age where everyone cusses left, right, and center. That takes class, and while some people might think this is a 'little' thing, to me it's extremely honorable. He was comforting the guards instead of the other way around. When Paul says "May God have mercy on your soul", he was thinking "May God have mercy on MY soul." It gets me when John sings "I'm in Heaven" in the chair and when Paul's voice cracks when he says "Roll on 2". Paul was 44 the year John Coffey walked the Green Mile (1935) which means he was born in 1891. So, in '99 Paul was 108 and Mr Jingles was 64 or 65 years old. A pet mouse in captivity has an average life expectancy of about 4-5 years... makes you wonder how long Paul will live, eh?! Several hundred years probably. And his penance is to lose everyone he loves, to outlive them all. I love that Melinda gave him that medallion after John healed her. - St. Christopher is a patron saint... he offered protection to travelers and against sudden death, many churches placed images or statues of him, usually opposite the south door, so he could be easily seen. He is usually depicted as a giant, with a child on his shoulder and a sheperd's staff in one hand. Fits John Coffey.

Fun Fact. Michael Jeter (Del) was Mister Noodle’s brother Mister Noodle from Elmo’s World from Sesame Street. Insane the variety he has in his filmography. And about Duncan’s height. In reality he was about the same height as David Morse (Brutal). In fact, James Cromwell (Hal) was taller than both. They had Duncan walking on boxes painted the same color as the floor and with certain camera angles they were able to create the effect.

It's a shame we didn't get much time with Michael Clarke Duncan; he was a tremendously-talented actor with a broad range. He also voiced the chief of the prison in 'Kung Fu Panda.' And yes, David Morse ('Brutal') is a very tall man, measuring around 6'7". He was actually taller than Michael Clarke Duncan (6'5"), but they used clever filming techniques to make John Coffee a giant. Morse is one of Steven King's favorite actors, along with Harry Dean Stanton ('Toot') and Barry Pepper ('Dean Stanton;' King named the two guards Harry and Dean Stanton for Mr Stanton, as well).

Fantastic reaction to this masterpiece! Percy's connections could easily have his target and their family starving to death in that era. This is set during the Great Depression when many thousands of Americans couldn't find work(probably why he didn't mind older dry toast). Many were living on the streets because they couldn't afford a home. Others had a home but no heating or electricity. That's what he meant by "You'll be on the bread-lines before the week is out." he was threatening his job, which could put him in some serious trouble with no jobs available and standing in charity lines for a piece of bread so stave off starvation. VERY hard to find another job. Men lined up just to get a job for the day as laborers. That's also part of why John Coffey refused help. When asked if he wanted them to let him run away he responded with "why would you do such a foolish thing?" He knew what the outcome would be. They would be fired at the very least. At worst they would be jailed and their families would end up homeless and starving too. The larger part was, as he said, he wanted to go. The world was too much for his kind soul. The limit to his power is that he can't resurrect the dead. The mouse wasn't dead yet, so he could heal it. The lady with the tumor also was still alive so he could heal her. The girls were already dead, so he couldn't help them.

I'm gonna mention something that doesn't get mentioned much. Every actor played their role perfectly, even the little details, like when John was gealing Paul n Dale was screaming for help, his reaction to the light bulb exploding looked so real, many other details too thruout the movie. Fantastic movie

I love that Melinda gave him that medallion after John healed her. - St. Christopher is a patron saint... he offered protection against death while on a journey. Many churches placed images or statues of him, usually opposite the south door, so he could be easily seen. He is usually depicted as a giant, with a child on his shoulder and a sheperd's staff in one hand. Fits John Coffey. So, a guy named Paul tells a story about a miracle man named J.C. - who is an empath, a seer & has a gift for healing and then dies for someone else's sin after blessing people with LIFE...

When Paul said may god have mercy on your soul. I honestly believe he was sayin it himself. Like the gravity of what’s about to happen is front and center he’s hoping for mercy. But Paul got the worst punishment. To see your loved ones die like all of them and nothing you can do. Pure torture
@LittleBlueOwl318
@LittleBlueOwl318 3 ай бұрын
Yes, I felt like Paul was actually thinking "May God have mercy on MY soul" while saying the words. And we also have a guy named Paul telling a story about a miracle man with the initials J.C. - who is an empath, a seer & has a gift for healing and then dies for someone else's sin after blessing people with LIFE... sounds familiar.

The horn sound lol Ahhhoooooooga! I read somewhere that MCD was 6'5", but he was recorded at heights up to 6'8" and possibly wore platforms in some roles to appear even larger. He died of a heart attack. He really deserved an Oscar for his role in this. One of the most touching movies, ever. His character was so pure and full of love--a true empath who was tortured by the pain of others. There was one little thing that bothered me about the Warden's role and how he had to tell his wife she was dying. If I am not mistaken, the time the movie is based in, women weren't even entitled to hear directly from their doctors. Their husbands would be told first, then the husband would have to deliver the news. I know women alive today who still had to have their spouse sign for their bank accounts just so they could open one of their own. Anyway, I'm so sorry to hear about your mom. I can't imagine how personal this was for you. May she rest in peace.

A bit about the UTI, and why Paul did not want to visit the doctor: Penicillin and antibiotics had not yet been invented in 1935, the only cure for infections was a nasty drug called Sulfa, which in most cases would make the patient sick before it cured the infection. Paul was putting off a visit to the doctor because he “didn’t want to throw up in the corners” from the Sulfa. Also, not being as effective as penicillin, you would have to take Sulfa for a much longer time. Penicillin was really a miracle drug when it came along a few years later.

If memory serves I believe Mr. Duncan died from congestive heart failure. I know he was in the hospital having just undergone heart surgery and was expected to make a complete recovery then took a turn for the worst. It was the saddest thing I ever read. I believe Tom Hanks delivered one of the eulogies for his funeral. It was Bruce Willis who called Hanks to tell him he had 'John Coffee' for him for this movie. Willis got to know Mr. Duncan when they worked together in the movie 'Pulp Fiction'.

This movie is so good that I have lost count of how many times I have seen it. Frank Darabont is the King of Stephen King adaptations. Stephen King is one of my favorite writers, and then you add a cast like this directed by Darabont, you know it will be a hit. They proved that with The Shawshank Redemption. Great Reaction

Same director and same author as The Shawshank Redemption. The director helped create The Walking Dead. The author also wrote the novels and stories behind the films Misery, Stand by Me, It, Christine, Carrie, Cujo, and The Shining, as well as the TV series Under the Dome.

This is indeed, without question, my all time favorite movie... I guess you can say it was fate that I grabbed it off the video store shelf that day, because I was looking for a movie and the cover and title made me think it was interesting, plus I liked Shawshank Redemption, so I gave it a try. Only one other movie made me shed tears (Mask- Rocky Dennis) but not to the extent that this one did. I cried in this movie as if I lost my entire family all at the same time. Never was the guy to think I would cry in front of my children, but the emotions pulled rank and it was Niagara Falls City for me. Great movie here and so many subliminal maxims within. Hooray to the entire cast and crew. John Coffey/ initials J. C./ Jesus Christ... One love

Meaning that they haven’t had to restrain someone there. They have respect for life and the death row inmates know that. Edit: Also sorry for the comments on old videos.
