Man, finding this video was a Godsend after watching multiple others. I just got my first 1911 - a simple inexpensive Tisas 1911A1 US Army model, nothing fancy. I shot yesterday and needed to clean it. Takedown was fairly simple and straightforward as was reassembly… but for the life of me, I could not get the slide release back into the gun! The tip where you slide the piece up to the detent and depress it a little bit really made sense and helped me successfully avoid the “idiot mark” on my week old 1911 😅 not worried about the snobs but just didn’t wanna scratch my gun. It seems like the other videos skipped over or just bypassed this simple little tip. I was trying to force it and not scratch my new gun at the same time lol.

Having just acquired a new Springfield 1911 with the tight tolerances of an un-broken-in pistol, I had GREAT trouble with the spring-loaded retainer pin for the slide lock pin. I've watched a dozen videos on cleaning, and this was the only video that mentioned using a tool to depress the retainer pin. I now have scratches on my new 1911 and was greatly frustrated at not being able to push in the slide lock pin. Regardless of you calling everything a bushing, I applaud you mentioning the spring retainer in re-assembly. No one else on u-tube has even mentioned it that I've seen. They all are re-assembling well-broken pistols and their pins just drop in place. On a new pistol, that part can be a bugger. Good thing I don't really care about anything other than how my gun shoots.

Randall Cole no such thing as the MOST reliable. Just about any 1911 will run fine if you maintain it and work all the kinks out just like with any other gun. But if I had to put money on it, it would be a hand fit custom. Something from Wilson or Ed Brown.

A lot of people are lackadaisical when it come to cleaning their firearms. They find to be a drudgery. I myself find it to be very meditative. I'll easily spend over an hour cleaning my gun. But that's just me. To each their own.

It's good to see that I've been cleaning my gun the proper way...Have shot 600+ rounds through my new Kimber Custom II and I'm still getting feed jams!! Very frustrating, although the gun shoots like a dream and is very accurate. Just wish it was more reliable. I have been cleaning and lubing it after every outing and I still get feed jams. Great video!

All in all, an excellent and thorough video that demonstrates exactly what needs to be done to keep your 1911's running smoothly. I do have one suggestion that comes from a close friend about my age who has been 'smithing his 1911's for more than 40 years. Wear lightweight gloves to keep the chemicals off of your hands. My friend has had some real issues with using solvents and cleaning products. They are volatile regardless of what the manufacturer states and over time they can be poisoning you. Sadly, you don't become aware of it until the damage is done.

PastryMan I like most of the two tone designs I’ve seen quite a bit, and I haven’t owned one personally but Springfield’s 1911s seem to be generally well liked. I’m not always a big fan of skeletonized triggers, but it looks good on this pistol. You get an extra round from the standard mag and a match grade barrel too. I hope that she does well for you! I don’t know what your experience is with 1911s but if there is anything you don’t like about them they can be changed. Every one I have owned started out being perfect just the way it is, and now they are all more perfect. 😂

I have Pipe Cleaners but I also use some “Chop Sticks” from our Chinese food place..it doesn’t harm the gun and can be sharpened to a fine point if necessary. I’ll look on line for the Tipton Polymer Pik in the mean time...Thanks for your easy to follow instructions!

Fantastic video! Been shooting the 0.45 ACP for 50 years. would recommend that pistol should be clean exactly this way every time we use it. small point would recommend wearing rubber gloves to prevent skin acid from getting onto the metal and etching it especially if we only use the weapon once or twice a year.

Two simple bro thank you, I've been in the military 23 years and believe me when I tell you this I have seen soldiers who do not know how to properly cleaning an M4. I learned how to clean weapons ( M16A1) in May of 1985 and I've never forgotten it doesn't even take long to clean an M4 at least 15 minutes you should be done. Like you said you will never get all the carbon off the weapon, a general cleaning or general maintenance it's all they need.

Thanks for this video. I know it is really old as well. I'm a new 1911 owner and I would like a few clarifications and/or questions in general. 1. What is your general thought of using Q-tips for cleaning instead of those small clothing fragments? 2. How do you clean those clothing fragments after you are doing using them? 3. Do you have to (I'm meaning for the longevity of my gun) add that extra layer of CPL on the gun? I was told that you didn't have to and that it already did that. 4. I have the CLP that is a spray. I just did a complete tear down of my colt government model 80. I am considering cleaning all the firing pin components and the cavity while it is all open. I know people say not to put much in the firing pin area but since it is all open now it's hard to resist not doing a complete clean out in that area. Comments?? Greg saiter....

Quick question when cleaning my old gov 1911 the barrel link pin falls out and the link comes away from the barrel. It still fires and is my best firearm for accuracy that I own for now. Is this just lose tolerances or should I have it looked at? Btw fantastic video!

That’s one of the best field strip and lube a 1911 I have seen. You should stress to put a drop of oil on the disconnector. Also, very important, learn the correct nomenclature for all parts.

What happens if the Lubricant gets into the Firing Pin area? I cleaned my 1911 and didn’t know anything about this..and I’m not sure if any lube got in there. I use Strike Hold, sprayed on a cleaning pad for most of the cleaning.

Certainly won't hurt. That said; with CLP there will be a thin coat on there from the cleaning part.
