Many have talked about how different and disgusting and folkloric Orlok was, and one aspect of that I noticed and appreciated was how he fed. Not a deathly kiss on the neck, but full on incubus style mounting and brutally biting the chest. He looked almost like a gigantic leach!

As a Ukrainian I’m so happy to see Orloc having a proper eastern European look. This is what like people with power and money in Poland, Ukraine, Hungary, Romania and perhaps Moldova looked like. A mixture of Austro Hungarian and probably Turkish fashion. I am very upset with people comparing it to dr robotnik or whatever. It’s absolutely amazing for me. I take it personally because it’s part of my country’s history as well. We didn’t have nobility but we had warlords who dressed like this. Look up Bohdan Khmelnytsky you’ll get it. He actually was inspired by at least three Ukrainian films by Paradjanov and Dovjenko which are Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors, The Eve of Ivana Kupalo, and Adriesh which doesn’t take place in Ukraine but is shot by Paradjanov who is a prominent figure in Ukrainian cinema.

@ I seriously don’t understand people who say that Longlegs or Nosferatu is trash. Even if u find them boring or smth they are pretty well made. Like I don’t enjoy Wes Anderson films, but for me to publicly sht on them and his hype it would take him to offend my mother personally.

@vladgheneli13 сағат бұрын
@@romeohadjuliette the only reason Orlok has a moustache is because they saw pictures of Vlad the Impaler, the one who inspired Stoker to write the novel. Nobody can say this movie is trash VISUALLY, because it's clearly well crafted, but the logic of what's going on plot wise is so abstract that I find it baffling you don't understand how a lot of people still can't like the movie as a whole. Clearly not a commercial movie, like most of the stuff Eggers does. I absolutely hated the Northman, I called it a total waste of time, while I enjoyed the Witch. And yes, Longlegs was a total waste of time as well, with a ton of hype attached to it. I liked movies like The Emptyman a lot more. Also, Nosferatu has been hyped AF, everyone calling it a masterpiece and you go watching it with super high expectations and then you find out it's a sort of dreamy, surreal experience where logic doesn't apply, I don't even know what's horror about it, other than the scene where Orlok signs the papers, the atmosphere and the way he was breathing, and then they had some jump scares just so they can motivate why it's a horror. The actual scary part was that every character ends up going mad, at some point I thought I was in a comedy theatre where everyone came out of the sanatorium, that's pretty scary for some people, but a scary creature movie? Come on... I convinced my gf to come watch it with me, my gf who never watches horror because she can't sleep at night after that, and she was really unimpressed and unbothered. I did like the fact that he was in shadows most of the movie, but for some reason, in my cinema, the movie played super dark, half of the time I was following a black screen with a few pixels moving around and trying to figure out what's going on. As I said, just like when you wake up and try to remember a dream you had. Definitely not for everyone and again, baffling how you cannot understand that. It has so many metaphors and crazy scenes that I can't even try... the carriage scene when he arrives at the castle, where the camera turns 90 degrees and the carriage is suddenly sitting the other way around (it's not even a 180 degree to be able to turn all the way to the carriage, so the carriage was basically moved) what the actual F was that? They were trying to convey how mesmerizing the count is? And how did the carriage arrive? What, Orlok suddenly does magic? We're in Harry Potter and the carriage drives itself? That's the kind of stuff a normal person thinks about when watches a normal movie that was hyped this much. I don't want to see random dreamlike stuff going around on screen when I watch a horror movie. If I want crazy stuff I can watch something like Enter the Void, or any other Gaspar Noe stuff and I watch it knowing I can't expect a normal movie following a coherent narrative. Other unnecessary scenes where I was constantly asking "why are we doing this?" were the gipsy scene where he arrives in the village and suddenly everyone starts laughing at him... I mean... again felt like I just entered a madhouse. Then the scene where Thomas falls down the window into the river, I feel it was straight out of some idiotic Disney movie where you get stabbed and you walk it off or something like that. Then the scene where she was possessed, it suddenly went Exorcist route, I was expecting her to puke all over him, not even kidding. The "Demeter" scene, where Dracula takes the boat to travel to London over sea, in this one it's not London anymore, it's Germany but the ship journey is still there. How do you travel by sea if you want to reach Germany from the Carpathians? Also, Orlok had to go by boat, but Thomas only had a horse and he arrived there before Orlok... what?! The end scene, again such a dumb way to kill a creature that's supposed to have lived for centuries and suddenly gave up living just so he could suck on her a little bit more... also, imagine he was sucking her blood the entire night, she must've had several blood infusions while he was draining her... give me a break... it felt exactly like Prey, where the predator dies like an idiot, another hyped movie that turned out to be a huge disappointment. I understand how you can enjoy it if you're here only for the pretty pictures, or if you're into crazy metaphors and poetic, surrealistic stuff, but the rest of us? Sorry, I just can't.

Minor spoilers for the look of the film, but one of my favorite things about the look of this movie was the colors grading. I noticed three prominent colors being blue, white, and yellow which also happened to be the colors used in the original 1922 film. Details like that really showed me how much the crew loved the original and wanted to keep in line with the source material.

It's been some time since i saw a film where the darkness was as incredibly oppressive as in this one, practically an unseen actor on its own. And as it happened with The Witch, it's the little details that make the film so unsettling, like Orlok's voice. When you finally realize that is the only time he is actually breathing, it's creepy as hell. It is also kinda funny seeing Dafoe in this, since he had the opposite role in Shadow of the Vampire

It was a fantastic movie. They nailed Orlok. A 14th century dead Hungarian nobleman was amazing. A couple of things that jumped out at me. When Depp's character was walking out of her mansion at the beginning of the film. She walked like Bride of Frankenstein. Arms out, hands and finger extended. Loved that The end shot reminded me of the last "official" murder and dismemberment of Jack the Ripper's last victim. Found in her bed. Disfigured and bone exposed from the thigh down to mid calf of the leg. In any case, loved this movie. Best of 2024 for my money's worth.

I liked the movie, but one thing bothered me when I started to think about it later. SPOILER WARNING The more I thought about it the movie, the more I realized that the male characters were mostly useless. Aside from the villain, none of them contributed significantly to the film, such that most of them could have been written out entirely and not change the plot hardly at all. They don’t even really help defeat Orlok in the end, they were merely passive observers who witness his demise after it’s already all over. END SPOILERS That aside I enjoyed the use of light and color and found the film very satisfying to look at. I also thought the performances were generally good, with Taylor-Johnson and Skarsgard being the standouts. I’ve heard some people complain about Depp, but she never bothered me, thought to be fair I found her so charmingly attractive that I may have been bias. All in all I liked it, but that one gripe kept me from loving it. I’d still say Bram Stoker’s Dracula is the best adaptation of the famous novel.
@filthycasual818714 сағат бұрын
Bram Stoker's Dracula is actually the WORST adaptation. Taking a horror story and turning it into a tragic forbidden romance isn't how you adapt a novel and claim to be the "most faithful version."

It's crazy that, being the 15th-or-so direct adaptation of Dracula, with literally hundreds of other depictions of the character in other stories, it is to my knowledge the only the second to actually give him a mustache as described in the book, and definitely the first prominent one. There have been so many looks for the iconic vampire over the years, but this is THE definitive look of Dracula for me now, I doubt I will ever picture him differently.
@carlix803516 сағат бұрын
I honestly think Depp was not that great. There were a few scenes where I noticed her line waiting with Co actors. It’s something that happens with new soap actors quite a bit. It may only be milliseconds of a pause but still noticeable. This is because in real world conversations that doesn’t happen. There’s a natural flow of sentences and responses. When I compare her acting to say Mickey Madison’s performance in Anora, even though the 2 stories are worlds apart, the starkness of difference is pretty clear imo. I love Eggers’ films usually but Nosferatu was a disappointment for me. The cinematography was top notch, as was the sound, but the script dialogue and some key acting moments ultimately ruined it. Add on the fact that the film is based on a very well known story that’s been adapted to film multiple times and… well you get the picture.

I agree. Cinematography and sound of the film are absolutely beautiful. What's the performances by the two leads are kind of are either bland or onenote. I had next to no emotional investment in the two leads getting a happy ending because I never actually saw what happiness looks like for the two of them. From the moment the film begins we're already dipping into anxiety and quickly dread. Depp's character is supposedly a very appealing person, with a loving husband and a devoted friend. But we never actually see anything of her loving personality because she's constantly either acting sullen or hysterically mad.

I felt it was a missed opportunity, very well shot, a good cast and great direction - but the creature design of Count Orlock was just a 'nasty looking dirty old man with a huge moustache' !!! They should have changed the title to VLAD not Nosferatu - as this is not Nosferatu. The original Nosferatu Count Orlock was a rat-like creature that cast his rats before him to spread the plague so as to cover the Counts vampiric murders... this 'creature' is just a nod to Vlad the impaler and Bram Stoker's Dracula - but the original German expressionist Nosferatu was not about that - it was a rip-off of Dracula with very different themes - this just felt like a missed opportunity to do a good homage to the original and Werner Hertzog's brilliant remake... I laughed out loud with the naked zombie corpse in the crypt Tomb scene - why was he naked? And the final death scene was just bizarre, Count Orlock is like a warthog crossed with an insect sucking at titties while the sun rises - only to drop dead - not be eradicated by the dawn light as in the original ... it was a good film - but 6/10 for me ...

I'd never seen the 1922 Nosferatu until after watching this 2024 film and I was genuinely and pleasantly surprised by how closely the 2024 film cleaved to the 1922 film. As you said, not the standard horror film but it's more horrific moments were quite visceral (all credit to the sound design) and unique to this 2024 film. It is also a beautifully shot film as well. I think it merits multiple watches.

I was not scared, but the sounds made by the vampire were quite unpleasant. I think, the plot and story should have been changed around, and characterisation improved for the supporting actors. And for some bizarre reason all Nosferatu movies are so, so, soooo good. How is it even possible ? Quite unique. Herzog, the very,very ancient one from the ?1920 (rewatched it recently hmmm (& still remembered everything, so bloody good) Shadow of the Vampire... just so pffff (real!) Gothic.

It’ll be interesting to see what Eggers does next?

I think something related to "knights"

@@WhiskeyThievesI reckon a horror set during world war 2 would be pretty cool. Kinda like a horror within a horror.

@ I said before that if Eggers was successful with Nosferatu I would be curious about his interpretation of Van Helsing, but what I would truly be interested in is Egger’s doing a sci-fi film.

Although I enjoyed and appreciated the film. It wasn't really my cup of tea. It's more for the artsy purist.

I will wait for the blu ray directors cut. Atmosphere, music, and cinematography were fantastic but pacing was awful and there was just something missing about it.
@gagalover2k1017 сағат бұрын
There won’t be a directors cut. There never has been for an Eggers film - every time one of his films comes out I see people saying they will get the directors cut on Blu-ray like it’s a given yet it has never ever actually happened, I remember the exact same thing was said about The Northman and a directors cut never materialised

@@gagalover2k10 Then I guess I will be waiting forever! XD

@@BearPawSwipe that makes two of us…I remember being told that the Northman was getting an extended edition release and being excited about it only for it to never become a reality, so disappointed even though the movies are perfectly good on their own
@Dartanyoogles15 сағат бұрын
@@gagalover2k10Eggers' already announced that there will be an extended cut, so you are incorrect.

Good filmography, nice sets and costumes, on the other hand way too many cheap jumpscares, all the used up clichés crammed together, the plot moves on fast forward just to tick check boxes, and Dafoe in a comedic role that fails to be taken seriously The geographical and historical inaccuracies aren't even worth mentioning at this point The movie moves on a huge hype surf wave, considering the slop we got in the last decade in the horror area

I loved it, however I think Bram Stoker's Dracula takes the edge here
@gagalover2k1017 сағат бұрын
Nah, Nosferatu is far superior - but Bram Stoker's Dracula did have a lot of really cool elements; like costuming and of course, Gary Oldman as the titular character. The latter had so many amazing little details but overall the former is the stronger film of the two
@GoldCrotalus12 сағат бұрын
I haven't seen Nosferatu, but I doubt that. Coppola's Dracula is severely overrated.
@gagalover2k1010 сағат бұрын
@@GoldCrotalus that’s why I said Nosferatu is the better of the two
