I recently read The Familiar Dark by Amy Engel. I'm a young adult male living in a city. Reading about a single mother living in a small town who's only child was murdered was a very different perspective. Even if it's not a true story, it showed me a lot of the horrors women face in the modern world. There's some pretty dark stuff in there but empathy wise was very valuable as some problems Eve faced in the book are actually experienced by a lot of women.

I for one get annoyed that so many books are adapted into some form of screen medium. One may picture a character a certain way and then suddenly an actor can ruin the way we pictured the character. I’m proud to admit that I have not seen a single Harry Potter movie! And I always refuse to look at it when someone watches it in my presence. I’ll leave the room or leave the residence. Harry Potter is good enough to experience in written form only, and doesn’t need a screen adaptation to back it up.

I really appreciate this video. I used to devour fiction in my adolescence. Suddenly, I become an adult and subconsciously determined that fiction is a waste of time (I have the same regard for movies nowadays, as well). Nonfiction sociological and theological books that examine life, living, and society appeal to me the most, but lately I've had a strong desire to feel the enchantment of fiction again. My problem is, I need to feel like the reading is worthwhile (weighty prose, social commentary, examination into the human experience) in order for it to feel useful to me. In other words, it's not just story I'm after. I need an intellectual challenge and wisdom.

I'm a 59 year old male and last read fiction in my last year of school in 1983. My issue with fiction is that because the characters don't exist (other than in the author's imagination) and as such I can't get invested in what happens to them because in the bigger picture it doesn't matter. You might therefore think I think reading fiction is a waste of time...not so...if you enjoy reading fiction then it could never be said to be a waste of time. My wife said my empathy and EI is lacking sometimes and she believe that my unwillingness to read fiction contributes to this. I had to study English Literature at school and I absolutely hated it because we only ever read fiction. I consume books constantly but always non fiction.

I’m 54 years old and felt the same way for the last 29 years that I’ve been reading history biography business success etc. but I always felt a void , I was always in the low track English as it was called at school for the not so smart ones, I decided recently to read English literature & I’m loving it, I’m trying to catch up on all I’ve missed, since this my own choice and not school it is a wonderful pursuit, just recently read Dickens Great expectations which was great reading, I’ve also just read the shorter ones, Fahrenheit 451, Animal Farm , All quiet on the western front to name a few, it’s worth it, believe me, once you seriously start it is worth every minute of your time!

@@kabutler70Dickens books are always too wordy where he uses 100 words when 10 words would have. I read Animal Farm at school and it was just so depressing. I'll stick to non fiction.
@5Gburn4 ай бұрын
@@peterreed9566Sounds like you have a narrow bandwidth where it concerns variety in the content, so it makes sense you'd want to read nonfiction, which has a narrower expectation of the reader as far as style. I have to agree about wordiness--I don't think most people like that. You mentioned finding a book depressing. You can ask a librarian to recommend stories with happy or satisfying endings. You never know--you might find a series you love.

For those who replied, I started with the Percy Jackson series. At first I was so thrilled about it, I read the first 5 books in a blink, I remember reading one of them in 2 days. Then I started to read friends recommendations. One of the better was "The book thief". I also bought "Dracula" and "1984" both of them an interesting read but not my favorite.
