Ratting is a more humane way to dispose of a rat infestation then many other methods (poison, water traps etc.). These rats eat the food ment for the livestock, and guessing by the barns and english country side, the livestock would be any form of poultry. Rats will also "hunt" and eat the poultry. These aren't poor rats, they are a pest in these numbers. And the terriers do what they were bread for: hunt and kill small game. Ratting is not done for sports or fun, it became a necessaty with mass breeding and production of livestock. Don't steer your hate towards the ratters, steer them towards the hungry society that demands availabilty of meat and poultry 24/7. If nothing is done to prevent overpopulation in rats (and mice in Australia) we would also starve, because in overwhelming numbers they would destroy any livestock operation and would also eat any vegetable, fruit and other plantable and harvestable goods, meant for human consumption, in no time. Just look at the mice plague Australia had this year ... and next year could be worse.

I will say this, anyone in the house could take his bone or food away from him and he wouldnt grumble or get angry. They are a unique breed of dog. Mindyou he wasnt scared of any breed of dog. I just imagine a rat all nice and comfy in his burrow, when suddenly the ground around him gets picked up and he tumbles out of the bucket screaming what teh f@@k as he gets picked up by a terrier and shook to death. He never even saw it coming. Hilarious.

I have a big rottweiler who turned out to love searching for mice aswell. We have this huge field outside of my house, that nobody uses for anything, but it has lots of holes and mice are living/hiding there. He never caught a mouse yet but almost everyday he has lots of fun sniffing and searching for the mice and trying to hunt them down, and dig up their holes to eventually get one, one day :)

West highland terriers were originally bred to hunt foxes, rats, badgers, and other smaller game. In general, they have a natural instinct to stalk and kill rodents. These dogs are absolutely loving this.

It's their job. Bred specifically for it. They can be difficult if not able to work a reasonable amount and get that exercise. They can get yappy and too fiesty, and widdle indoors. They need plenty of energetic out.

We had a papillon mix for the longest time and it was always up for debate what he was mixed with. I thought it was a Terrier mix though many thought it was a Chihuahua mix. Then suddenly dead possums and small animals started appearing in our backyard. That is what confirmed it. We had a terrier on our hands. :)

I just stumbled across this video, must say it’s very impressive to watch these dogs totally destroy rats. What kind of dogs are they? Do they hunt rats by instinct or is there any training involved? Have to claim ignorance on this topic as I’ve never seen dogs that hunt rats before, but they sure seem anxious to get after it! Thanks for any information!
@sdbegotist3 жыл бұрын
The instinct is often bred into the breed, with some dogs being more receptive to ratting than others. My mum's fat little Jack Russell was a rather lax dog, but as soon as she got to an area with rats, her temperament completely shifted, and would 100% focus on killing these rats.

The English bred the Eng white terrier , & were used to kill rats in pits, for sport . Some descended from these, Today mostly dogs with beards, to protect from bites, were ratters & other varmints, Like Sealyham, Westie, wire fox, Lakeland, Welsh, Cairn, Scottie, it's still in their instinct
