She was at this time, homeless and penniless. Here she is so very thrilled, excited and grateful, about feeling appreciated, wanted, and now starring in a major motion picture! This was going to be her great major comeback! Judy was on her best behavior and was incomplete control of herself determined to be a success. When ever watching this test, and seeing how very happy and thrilled she is, this always makes me so very sad. From the very beginning, she was considered a joke and the director never ever respected her or gave her a chance! She was now discarded by the industry making this the very beginning of the end of Judy Garland. This totally destroyed her confidence and self-worth. 😥

@@TeamJRob Yeah, he was taking a dig at her to humiliate her. So sad she got pushed around by people because of her addiction issue, and she’d rarely stand up for herself. (Unfortunately, mealy-mouse Mark Herron was with her at the time and not Sid Luft.)

What a terrific compilation of audio and film you put together. I am amazed how clear and sharp certain sections of each of Judy's four costumes were created. Wayne Martin shouldn't have secretly recorded their phone conversations without Judy's knowledge of his doing so, but thank goodness he did. We are able to understand more from Judy herself. As for Judy's song, I actually like "I'll Plant My Own Tree." The song she preferred "Get Off Looking Good" to my ears is wordy and strident. True, she sang it acapella, but I have never liked it. As for the book, I love it, and I have read it several times. Judy, as wonderful as she was, was not right for the role at that point in her life. In 1967, she was too thin and fragile. If they had made it when she looked stronger and sturdier as she appeared in the 1963 film I Could Go on Singing, she would have been great. Judy wanted to get fired since she felt the script was dirty and her character was not a character Judy wanted to portray. However, she was a magnificent actress, and she could have pulled it off if she really wanted to, despite being so tiny and thin and fragile.

Jacqueline Susann should have played Helen Lawson (and countered with a crack about "The Wizard of Hoo-ha"). Or Dolores Gray. Or just cut to the chase and got Merman. UPDATE! Not too long ago I found a KZbin clip of Lena Horne singing "I'll Plant My Own Tree," exactly as it should be sung. There was Helen Lawson!
@akrenwinkle10 ай бұрын
It's still up, Lena did her best for the awful song on "The Dean Martin Show." Lena was a favorite of Dean and every TV host, particularly in the 50s and 60s. According to Liza, Judy hadn't read "Valley of the Dolls" and didn't know that she was expected to play crude, snarling Helen Lawson, who was really crude, snarling Ethel Merman. Once given the script, Judy absolutely refused to act as the role demanded. Director Mark Robson tried a few takes, then gave up. Prior to that, Judy was offered $75,000 for very little work, was given 20 Century's best dressing room equipped with a pool table. Everyone at the studio- even the ancient moguls who knew Judy from "Pigskin Parade" in 1937, showed up to show love and support. Judy was sky-high off Ritalin from the beginning, and spread the story- repeated by Patty Duke- that the director refused to let Judy act in front of a camera, something that made absolutely no sense, but when Judy said something, it was- and is- never questioned.

@mike48877 Жыл бұрын
I've always believed that Judy was both hired and fired for publicity. Hired, because the Neeley character was based on her. And, if she couldn't function, the firing would get another ton of publicity. They knew what they were getting into with her. Poor Judy, used again!
@zzzbbbooo Жыл бұрын
She fired because she didn't turn up and was under the influence when she did.
@Amber-nx3iz10 ай бұрын
They never fired John Wayne and he was drunk on every set. They would stop production so he could get his fix. Wonder how many movies he was fired for? It’s a shame Judy was so abused and exploited. Beautiful talent and artist.
@mike4887710 ай бұрын
@zzzbbbooo According to Patty Duke, who was in the movie, they didn't call for Judy until LATE IN THE DAY. By that time she had plenty of time to get sloshed on whatever she was taking. They knew she was a morning person, and made no effort to accommodate her. Their bad. I still say it was for publicity.
@Amber-nx3iz10 ай бұрын
Patty Duke also said they fed her wine on set. In my opinion they were trying to exploit her and lead her to failure. Her vulnerabilities and weaknesses were known through the press. She was working on a book prior to death. It’s audio in her words. You can find it. She was planning to exploit everyone her words. My opinion she was done in like Whitney Houston. It’s just my opinion.

It would have been heartbreaking to see Patty Duke rip that wig off Judy's head, and I'm glad such a thing was never committed to film. On the other hand, it would have been thrilling to see Judy play a woman as mean and desperate as Helen Lawson. I bet Judy would have loved playing a bad girl in movies, and I believe her performance would have been bone-chilling if given the chance.
@Spiderman7Bob72 жыл бұрын
They should have kept Judy Garland in the film "Valley of the Dolls" instead of firing her. They replaced Judy with Susan Hayward and dubbed her singing voice with Margaret Whiting. Susan Hayward can sing as she proved in "I'll Cry Tomorrow". Does that make sence ? And since Judy already recorded the song for the film before she was let go, why didn't they use her recording instead of using Margaret Whiting's voice "
@steveweinstein32222 жыл бұрын
She was, to say the least, unreliable. She was costing the studio A LOT of money because she didn't appear on the set. Susan Hayward was the opposite. She appeared on time, knew her lines and her marks. It took her only five days to do all her scenes.
@lbputzer2 жыл бұрын
There's no way they could've used Judy's recording for Hayward to lip synch instead of Whiting. It would've been surrealistically cruel since Judy's voice was iconic and instantly recognizable, not to mention a recipe for litigation on Garland's part. Also, the reason both Hayward's & Duke's voices (both of which could carry a tune) were dubbed is that the Helen & Neely roles were supposed to be extraordinarily talented vocal performers---not just "average" like the real-life voices of the actresses who portrayed them.
@robertgold38682 жыл бұрын
@@lbputzer Susan could sing as shown in I'll Cry Tomorrow. Patty, despite having several successful albums, couldn't sing a note. They cut each song together when she hit a right note here and there.

Judy Garland was a tremendous talent. Imo, Susan Hayward was exactly the right casting for the role of Helen. Judy was too tiny and frail to have been believable as Ethel M … I mean Helen Lawson. I was a teen when the book and the movie came out. Loved both of them. So glad I grew up in that particular era. “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.” A Tale of Two Cities Charles Dickens

Can you imagine Judy doing the fight in the bathroom? That would NEVER have worked it was way to physical and she may have been even tinier that Patti Duke.
@lbputzer2 жыл бұрын
@@Itstonytime77 Absolutely. Patty has frequently told the story that Susan Hayward (even though she was physically more imposing than Duke) lost her footing during one of the takes of that scene, and was pushed to the ground. Patty didn't do it intentionally, but Hayward perceived it that way. It created tension between them from that point forward. Judy would've shattered like glass.
