The driver held it off for me, I turned round when it was stopped and the driver gave me the thumbs up. It was very lucky I was in the right place.

More than just lucky! In fact your clip reminded me of one of the most unlucky train clips i've seen on YT. A crowd gathered waiting to film the Flying Scotsman coming through.......only to have a Virgin passenger train wipe out the view as it passed by!

As a young lad Welwyn North was my local station , lived up the hill at Harmer Green, circa '65 onwards Spent many glorious hours up in the signal box sharing sandwiches and the odd slice of lovely apple pie my mum would make with the signalman, and learned much, that was back in the heyday of the Deltics and it was the joy of my life when they came thundering through, you never forget that unique sound, it's infectious. A group of us young lads would spend hours t'other side of the station messing about, and one regular spotter whom we called 'big bloke' who rode a scooter who passed the time of day with us. What innocent wonderful days they were, travelled all over the country alone spotting, i wish youngsters of today could have such simple joys where no one worried about the things which infect our lives now. And what nice people the station and signal staff were, putting up with a little lad who loved the railways. Can spill the beans about being allowed in the signal box as anyone involved would be long retired or passed.

Really great memories Lew, i was a Shunter at Stoke Gifford, now Bristol Parkway, and my young Son just 11, would travel up to York on his own using his travel pass, and come home late and show me all the Locos he had spotted, Severn Tunnel Junction too, great experience. He's 42 now and still talks about it and laughs. Todays kids are missing out on so much reality.

Remember seeing a Deltic & an A4 Gresley Pacific passing from opposite directions on the Welwyn Viaduct from the top deck of a 716 (?) bus returning home after an afternoon's shopping at the then Welwyn Department Store in the school holidays. The Viaduct was then free of overhead electrification gantries. Elderly gent' opposite explained how fortunate it was to have avoided wartime bombing. He went on to explain about a saddle plan that would widen the Viaduct to 4 tracks.Never got the whole story... he got off at The North Star

There was once a Deltic hauled service between Doncaster and Hull. It came through Thorne just after 10pm and if I were still awake I would lie in bed, excited child I was then and listen to that amazing thrum as it accelerated from Thorne junction toward Goole. Awesome sounds and it has struck with me ever since.

Blôódy CWR (continuous welded rail)!! Spotters/film makers/viewers today are 90% robbed of the excitement I enjoyed as a youngster. No “clickerty clack” of coach wheels every sixty feet (every 24 sleepers), no loose fishplates rattling as the train passes. No deafening noise and ultimate satisfaction from the train passing into the night. Just one short burst of “white noise” and that’s it! Shameful.
