One important thing; the LAA patch will make you sync out with players who dont play with it. So if you want to play vanilla, dont enable / disable it since every vanilla players play without it.

Good DoW primer, hopefully it will encourage folks to try out/reconnect with the game. If I may suggest another DoW KZbinr to add to the list, I recommend DoW Stronghold. He has a firm grasp on Soulstorm matchups and brings an infectious excitement to his casts.

afaik LAA stands for Large Address Awareness and allows to use more than 2GB of RAM downside is people with LAA enabled can't play with people who have this disabled so probably rare used for vanilla and mods that don't use dow mod manager by default

Thanks so much for this video. It was really useful. I played DoW Dark Crusade a lot when it came out, I remeber having it on CD, I have susequently returned to it several times for the nostalgia but had never been able to get into Soul Storm having not played it when I was younger and not being overly enthusiastic about the two new races. Not being a big 40k fanboy (my main engagement with the IP was through this game), so I don't really know the factions tbh. But I have wanted to look into the modding scene and it seems like SS is the game that has all of the mods. This was a useful starting off point for that. I will be sure to check out some of your other videos and the other creators you referenced. Thanks again.

Ive been playing this game since it was released. DoW (unmodded) is the best rts of all time. It is shameful that it is not a top esport. Would highly recommend any DoW expansion over any rts any day.

You neglected to mention El furretos shadow mod, which gives realistic shadows to all units, specular textures, force high poly, fullresteamcolor, persistent bodies, the bug fix mod, fixed models, etc... As a side note, some things that I'm surprised were never modded is that health and mana bars are huge (unlike the thin lines of supreme commander) and sit below the unit (unlike StarCraft 2), which means that if you have units selected and move the camera, the health bars of units further back will obscure view of units in the front. Likewise, setup bars shouldn't be necessary at all given the excellent animations. But that is for someone more talented than I to address.

@@tomwithatophat6457 the mods I mentioned don't really affect performance at all, except for the persistent bodies mod which did cause some stuttering but only on a campaign map, after an hour of accumulating dead orks at a single location, with hundreds of dead orks on the screen at once while zoomed out, and that was with a very low end graphics card, a radeon 9500. With a more modern card, they shouldn't affect performance at all :D

@@tomwithatophat6457 oh whoops, I wrote the first comment in a very misleading way. The shadow mod, specular textures, fullresteamcolor and all the rest are all separate things that can be run at the same time. If you're looking for the most optimal experience, I'd also recommend the camera mod, the ai mod and the race mods, all of which can be run together. Actually, do look for a guide instead of trusting my memory. The mods I just recommended don't significantly change the default gameplay, other than adding new races, whereas some other mods will add new units for existing races and make more drastic changes with balance and feel.

Crucible is basically a replacement for ultimate apocalypse. The UA team hasn’t updated the game in a long time for what I understand. Crucible in my experience is the best way to play dawn of war if you want large battles.

It's funny, I had never really played a 40k game before, but I did watch things like Boreale Cast and had no idea what they were referencing lmao. I just bought all of the Dawn of War games for the first time on steam this week and it's already topped my favorite RTS games I've ever played. The game is so damn smooth and responsive and it's really refreshing especially for an RTS game, where every other RTS I had played before this had some kind of AI or pathing issues. I fucking love the reinforcement and morale system and how it encourages you to keep smaller groups of units and upgrade them, rewarding you for not just spamming the shit out of random goons. It makes me wonder why no other RTS game really did this afterwards. Phenomenal game, I'm just sad I never tried it out sooner.

I have a vanilla 4v4 Free For All Dark Crusade game if you're interested. The game lasted close to 2 hours because we were 4v4. I seriously need constructive criticism. Necrons are hard to play.

DoWPRO; it's perfect balance, top polish, and beutiful models improvement; but is only for skirmish/pvp. If you are new and played the original campaign only, well: the first expanion(Winter Assault) have also a linear campaign for the I.Guards, while the Dark Crusade ex is the pinnacle of the series(and for Relics, devs, career) and have a "dinamic" campaign(with territories and moving foes armies), also present and expanded in the last expansion, SS, that was made by different dev, have less quality, and in general is not played by expert players. I can suggest to play every vanilla episode for the campaign, but use DoWPRO for the rest, and if one day you will start to find planetary camp easy you can search for TitaniumWarsMod(that also add double the army content and five new races in skirmish), or maybe the work in progress, Unification.

The devs wanted you have installed(so, bought) all the games for have all the factions, but mean also made you waste lots of hard disk space if you don't use the campaigns content, but existed an user made fix, called: "Soulstorm_Unlocker", that i see also is integrated in the DoW online launcher, you can see and hear about it in this great video here, at 7:48.

Sometimes lag happens depending on whether you are playing via mod manager or DoWonline. I'd give both a try and if it still is causing you problems, you can go to the discords to seek further help!

Nowadays you have the unification mod and the extended campaign. The new campaign adds like 3 races and another planet to the Soulstorm campaign. However, it is brutal for casuals. If you do not know how to press the AI early whithout neglecting your own economy you will be punished even in easy level. More than once I have said "screw this game" and uninstalled it.

Thanks for sharing info. As a '74 class player that start from ever since it came out the basic game, twenty years ago, that finish to find too much easy the hard difficult in all the campaigns, this modern mod finally refresh it and make interesting again. For info, i and pals used only and always the PRO mod from its beginning(more than 15years i think), and only in the last two years i approach TitaniumWarsMod, because it have campaign adapted and reworked(also for the one in DC too!) and found that's not only good for that, because also really a great work made over 15years; in that i found that the two planetary campaign become very hard and have to play them in easy for learning the new army list, and despite all the new content added it seem still be balanced and polished almost as the vanilla SS, a thing that i don't find in any other interesting mods at that time. I don't have tried Unification waiting it become finished and fixed, but i have found Apocalypse an implayable big silly mess(that try to emulate Starcraft/sc2, that was great, but it become obsolete even before DoW launch) and so even in the campaign application it have. I dunno if the Unification is actually harder or not than the TWM, im having difficulty and can't beat it in the normal setting at the moment.

I know that this is a long shot, but I don't know who else to ask. Whenever I attempt to do anything on the DowOnline launcher, it says "An unknown error occurred while downloading the mod!" Be it attempting to download custom maps, using the fix in-game errors tool, or just launching the game, it all gives that error. If anyone has any idea why, please let me know!

Yes there is a way. You have to modify a text file within the game's install folder, unfortunately there is no in-game settings menu that allows you to rebind hotkeys. The text file you'll need to change is called KEYDEFAULTS.LUA. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eoiYh3mfoNqsqKs

There's also TitaniumWarsMod, it is an "old" complete and polished mod, add like double the base army list content but no alternative factions, also reworked the strongholds, make the difficult very high, also works for DC planetary camp! Unification is on the make from 2-3 years, i don't have tried.

I don't like mods that increase the size of armies and separate the camera into the stratosphere. The game engine is not designed for this, just as it is not designed for flying units, it looks pathetic. Mods vary in style and quality, and when they are combined together it looks like a child has gathered all his toys in a pile.
