I've collected, DJ'd and danced to Northern Soul since going to Wigan Casino in the late 1970's. These recordings are made so that long into the future, anyone can visit KZbin and continue to learn about and listen to this fantastic music, after I'm gone. They were recorded in the USA at a period in time when sadly overlooked. Only to be discovered and played in the 1970's soul clubs of the UK, and now played in many venues in countries all over the world. Many are recorded on obscure record labels, that simply never got airplay and the small number of records that were pressed, just disappeared. Hence their rarity.
If you wish to find out more about the fantastic and varied world of Northern Soul, search out the website - SoulSource. I warn you though, once down the rabbit hole, you could be hooked. I have no affiliation to the site, but there you will find a wealth of knowledge from dedicated lovers of the music. Together they know every artist, band member, pressing plant, label, label owner and origin of every track. Some so knowledgable that they can even tell you who the third saxophonist on the left was on some of the recordings. Others on the rare soul scene though may argue that it was his brother! Whoever is right, Northern Soul fascinates and satisfies many over 50years on.

65 yrs old this year, when I hear all these fantastic tunes god it takes you back. My body might be slow, but my heart and soul isn't. If only we could go back,to the best days ever,my youthclub disco's and most of all it was a safer place to grow up. Nice to see the younger one's K.T.F.. but they will never feel what us oldies felt first time around. Aint no soul like the old sole.😊😊

I'm always amazed that people can remember which tracks were played where. As it was over 50 years ago since I went to S.O.T. Wigan and Blackpool, I remember the tracks but have no idea where I heard them as I've had no-one to remind me since the late 60's, early to mid 70's. The only exception was hearing Skiing in the Snow at the Highland Rooms Blackpool, for the first time, after it was hyped to death in the soul press. I thought it was pants and still do.

I remember it at Mecca as well mate. I recall where I was on the dancefloor and how I started dancing to it. Four kicks NSEW then a backdrop. Lol. The stuff you remember. You're right. It was a crap sound. KTF

I’m glad it hit the spot for you, it’s a great track. It’s on the Cuppy label, would you believe owned by ‘Rock around the clock’ Bill Haley, after his wife Barbara Joan "Cuppy" Cupchak.

I remember getting a lift from Dave Elsworth, from an All Nighter in Bangor on Dee. The following month I got a mention in his article in Blues and Soul. Somewhere around the mid 1970's. I've still got a copy somewhere in the back of a drawer. I mentioned to him that my favourite record at the time was Love Love Love by Bobby Hebb and he included what I said. It's still great, but I wouldn't say it's still my favourite. In fact I couldn't say what my favourite 100 are. Don't know how I could put them in numerical order by preference. Plus would it be my favourites to listen to, or my favourites to dance to, because they would be two separate lists.

Dave’s been on the scene forever, I’ve played a few nights when Dave has been on and he’s always filled the dance floor. Bobby Hebb is a still a belter, and brings back memories of Leigh Casino for me, not Wigan. I feel the same about the order of the top 100. Different tracks mean different things, from different places. I still say that the Tomangoes is my desert island disc, and seven day lover got me back into Northern in the late 90’s, so I have a special place for that one too. But as you say, there are so many! Cheers Baz

In a Venn Diagram of Northern Soul, good to listen to, and good to dance to. The Tomangoes would be in the sweet spot in the middle. I used to be a Seven Day Lover but these days I'm lucky if it's once every seven days. LOL I'm hopefully going to an All Dayer in Leigh on Saturday.@@BazFromThePast

(Follow Your Heart NS Club) St. Josephs Hall Chapel St. Leigh WN7 2PJ I've not been before so don't know the venue. Torn between there and a night in Connah's Quay. Which I also haven't visited yet. As I'm from Chester Connah's Quay is closer but heard the floor has been redone after a flood and isn't too good for dancing due to grippy varnish.@@BazFromThePast

In answer to your question Ian, why DJ’s covered up a label, it was after they’d spent time searching the archives and discovered a record, it was covered up to stop other competing DJ’s finding a copy, so that their sets were unique and in demand, that helped them get the next gig. We had a simple life 40years ago. Life was grim up north back then, no Spotify, just blackouts and miners strikes. Times moved on and it’s great to see the music played in most countries around the world now by young and old- uncovered.
