Damn. I live near Broadmoor. These things can be heard from my house if you listen closely. At my old school every Monday at 10am on the dot the alarms interrupted our lessons. Back in the 80s or 90s somebody escaped from Broadmoor and my dad, who lived in the neighbouring town of Sandhurst at the time, said that the teachers had to lock the doors to prevent somebody getting in.

In 1952, John Straffen, already convicted of 2 child murders, escaped from Broadmoor asylum and murdered a child living in the local area while she was riding her bike round the village..... For anyone who says these alarms would be irritating or prevent a lie in on a Monday should read up on this and other residents at the hospital. It is actually the residents around there that demanded the warning system. If the sirens irritate you, imagine living on myrtle avenue in Heathrow lol !!

The dampers (that's what we call them in the states) are solenoid activated. The solenoids are in those boxes on the intakes. (Inlets)
@Joethaboss664 жыл бұрын
You are incorrect and he is correct. The solenoids are essentially electromagnets which when activated pull down a plunger connected to a series of leavers. These are connected to the handle on the shaft of the damper and thus is opens. The damper mechanism and handle all reside in those boxes on the intakes.

Thank you for these videos! I grew up in Wokingham and went to The Holt School so obviously am most familiar with Siren C. Even before I looked up where Siren C was located I KNEW it was the one in Joel Park just by the sound. The slightly "gritty" high tone compared to the much clearer low tone, the distinctive sudden shut-off just leaving an echoing whine for the run-down... At St Paul's Junior there was a music teacher called Mr. Herridge who wrote compositions incorporating local sounds and he included that echoing run-down in one of his songs. I remember the 1991 and 1993 alarms going off for real. I was in Brownies for the first one, and at school in year 6 for the second one. I remember one girl crying at school because she was so scared and one of the boys kept pretending to be a murderer which made her cry more, and the teacher just kept scolding him every time she saw him do it!
@mrmattandmrchay Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment, sorry for delay in responding. About the boy pretending to be a murderer, I can just imagine that! The sirens, from a kid's perspective must have been frightening - it's not exactly a 'nice' sound I suppose. I remember the sirens from when I used to stay at my nan's house as a kid. She lived in Bracknell, and was about 1 mile from the Bracknell station siren. This was long before the internet, so finding it would have been difficult unless you were 'in the know'. If she'd taken me there, that would have frightened the hell out of me!
@seanjuth3 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure the sirens were activated with something like a old wb1400. Here in the states, ringing voltage would close the main siren contactor, but in britain, the old air raid sirens were controlled via a wb1400. Because of the size of the siren telephone box, and the fact the siren has special signals, its more likely to be something similar to a wb1400 that would have activated the system

I was hoping the noise would come out on the video, but it didn't. Yes I know what you mean, but I could hear it quite clearly when I was there. It sounded very much like the rotors were touching something as they were rotating which brought them to a stop (much earlier than the other sirens that I filmed).
