No filming allowed - so we came prepared with HIDDEN CAMERAS, which annoyed MrChay as I had to cut a hole in his SuperDry bag!!
But all was set to change (for the better!)
I've been editing this in stages for the last 4 months, so I hope you enjoy it!
MORE TO COME!

It's a very complicated and advanced version of roped hydraulic lifts ! This was also installed by the two sons of Elisha Graves Otis, and judging by the panel we can see in your older videos of these lifts, it's still maintained by Otis after more than a century !
@mrmattandmrchay
@mrmattandmrchay 6 жыл бұрын
yep, perhaps! Not sure if these old panels are still in use but fascinating stuff, especially as these lifts were designed before lift technology existed.

Absolutely, but the roped part in a separate place. Amazes me the path the ropes to through to get to the lift car - loads of diverting wheels all the way up to the top!

For some people, going up is a tourist trap, but going "down" to the motor room is the treat ! I'm glad you did it ! I'm French of course, but I've never been up the tower because of those tourists forming a 3-hour waiting line... wait, you are also a tourist XD nope just kidding ! I really wanted to see this motor room in such a detailed video ! Can't wait to see the next parts !

Cool, really glad you liked it! To be honest, I'd love to do it again and take more cameras to plant around the place. I could have done some better filming, but this is me all over - perfectionist! Yeah been in those queues to the top level before!

Since this lift goes up in an angle instead of straight up and down, is it an elevator or a funicular?

Are there conventional passenger cable elevators with counterweights in the Eiffel Tower? Thanks.
@TimpBizkit
@TimpBizkit 3 жыл бұрын
So does it just use a giant cylinder to separate two big snatch blocks and hence raise the lift car on the end of the cable? I have seen a similar working lift in a model of a Victorian house. A big force over a short distance turns into a longer distance raising the lift carriage
@RaceDude57

I was there March 2019 (I got to see Norte Dame just 2 weeks before the fire) and I noticed the two tanks (counterweights) moving at different speeds?
@mrmattandmrchay
@mrmattandmrchay 5 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure that they are directly linked, so whatever is being pumped in/out of them (if that's still how they work) could happen at different speeds. But I read that the CWs are no longer in use, they just go up and down "for show".

So the 1980's lifts are powered by a 1900's hydraulic lift motor?
@mrmattandmrchay
@mrmattandmrchay Жыл бұрын
Not sure everything dates back to the 1900s, but the "design" does. And they kept the original design concept, but probably replaced much of it by now.

If I was up there in person that Machinery will be crazy loud
@Nitrxgen
@Nitrxgen 6 жыл бұрын
Huh, crazy. So if I understand correctly, the lift is connected to multiple pulleys and the pulleys are pushed apart to pull the lift cables, as he said 1m movement in the pulleys (trolley) is 8m lift movement. The drums act like a reservoir I guess?
@mrmattandmrchay
@mrmattandmrchay 6 жыл бұрын
The drums were used for the original design. They still move, but I'm not sure if they are 'required' anymore. They still move just to show people the heritage of the system. But in the original design, it was a water pump system. It pumped the water out of the drums into the piston which pushes the carriage along the track. The weight of the drum (with water inside) acts as a counterweight). Click this link as I show you exactly how it works here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i6ObdJWvjZd3i6cm32s

@mrmattandmrchay 4 жыл бұрын
I asked them when I booked it. They said no to filming, so I set up secret camera(which I didn't need and I ruined a shirt) because the tour guide said it was ok. I'm not sure of the reasons, but guess it's something to do with security. Maybe the person I emailed didn't know, and it was easier for him/her to say "no filming"? I don't know! Thanks for the compliments and glad you enjoy the videos :)

Some impressive machines! i'm still salty that the Galleries Lafayettes lifts were modernized... twice... There an old lift in my apartment building though and i've always wanted to have a look at that motor room, i live just 2 floors below the motor. Just the noise that resonates through the shaft, stair case and corridors make me very curious about it. It's a Kone lift, i'd say it's from the 90's or 80's so it's not *that* old but it's very loud, lots of "clangs" and chain noises when you ride inside too. Any ideas what i might find in the motor room ?
@mrmattandmrchay
@mrmattandmrchay 6 жыл бұрын
The chain noises might be 'compensation chains', that link from the bottom of the lift car and join on the counterweight. These are not that common, but compensate for the weight of the cables when the lift it at the top (i.e. loads of cable weight on the counterweight) and bottom(loads of cable weight going to lift car) floors. Perhaps this video fits your lift? kzbin.info/www/bejne/ep7Wp39maqetqqM

So it used to be hydraulic, when was it converted to electricity? The tour guide mentioned something about safety issues with the original lift. What was that about?

i think their was no Governor
@mrmattandmrchay
@mrmattandmrchay 6 жыл бұрын
From my understandings, the hydraulic system was originally WATER being pumped from the cylinders into the rams. Perhaps this was steam driven? I doubt that there were hardly any safety systems from the first elevators in the 1890's. If you look at my old eiffel tower videos (link at end of the video) there is a grooved strip all the way up the shafts, so if anything goes wrong the lift car grabs the safety rail.
