I am 55 years old and have never tried sardines or anchovies until this past week. My 'For You' suggestions from KZbin introduced me to your videos and, Sir...thank you. I am drunk on tinned fish these past few days and couldn't be more satisfied. When I was in college I had a class on childhood development which was fascinating. Kids like ketchup before mustard (sweet = ok...acrid = poisonous). It's a thing. Eventually we develop a set of stones and try the scarier stuff and become well-developed human beings. Maybe, before I die, I'll try a slimy raw oyster. Or not. Thank You. Merry Christmas :)

I'm older as well and I've learned that passing the selections of canned seafood when I was younger, has turned into trips specifically for such lately. Saltines, Captain's Wafers, Wheatsworth and even Ritz crackers also in the basket. Along with a couple lemons and a new hot sauce I haven't tried; I'm good to go. 😉

Canned fish was a favourite easy meal when I was offshore racing out of Douarnenez in France. Douarnenez has been a big centre for fish canning for more than a century and has a Museum of the Sardine. My co-skipper Nathan is particularly fond of Petite Navire's Tuna Catalan style while my own heavenly ring pull is Saupiquet's Mackerel in Mustard Sauce. I brought a dozen cans home with me in July 😋

I'm Portuguese, and my favorite canned Sardines are Sabor do Mar and Bom Petisco. I always buy the spicy one in oil or tomato sauce. These companies make good Mackerel too, but the best Mackerel is the one my mom makes in the oven with spicy bread filling inside their bellies. Anyway, canned fish is such a comfort food. When my mom didn't feel like cooking, we'd toast bread and always have canned fish and maybe some boiled eggs or olives on the side. It brings me back to my childhood when I saw this video and saw so many cans.

I always avoided canned fish, but one day i got the urge to try it. I can not believe that i avoided it for so long, most of it is absolutely delicious, especially smoked herring and sardines. Stay away crom canned oysters though, they are delicious but they are commonly farmed in China and have ridiculous amounts of heavy metals. I used my Radiacode and put an open can of the Reese large smoked oysters in a lead box. Out of the 3 cans i did this with all 3 cans had radiation levels significantly higher than background and the analysis of the spectrum suggested that the contamination was Cesium 137. Im not saying you will die if you eat them, but Cesium 137 bioaccumulation means it will build up in your bones and organs over time and if you eat enough of it then it can cause serious problems.

Unironically sardines helped me so much last winter. I was looking up ways to mitigate seasonal depression and saw oily fish mentioned pretty often, and sure enough i made an effort to have a few cans a week (up to once a day if i found the ones i like best on sale) and had a noticable drop in Bad Days, mentally speaking. I got a mini indoor greenhouse this past birthday as well, so between that and the 'dines i'm banking serotonin for the winter 😊 Anyway sorry for the novel and i hope everyone has more good days than bad in the coming months

Love the music in the intro; It's Bob Ross whom I have met when I was young (not chill). Love tined fish snacks in cold weather. Good vid.

Had some KO Mak in lemon and olive oil at 2 am last night . Can't go wrong with KO. Having Matiz bonito tonight. Man. The mussel looks good but I'm working my way up. Thanks for the info. It's genuinely because of you and Slow Jabroni that I had a tin for the first time in my adult life. My kids are adults! So I'm working on catching up on my tin game!

My uncle used to make sardine sandwiches for me, with mustard, when I was little. They were great. Thanks for the other ideas.

Panco tinned sardines and pilchards, then deep fry. Perfect with a beer or glass of wine. Here in Devon we fry lightly floured fresh sprats and eat them heads and all.

I still remember enjoying canned Pike fillets back in the 1960's. I never read the label, so I don't know the country of origin. I still hope to see them again some day.
