Hello. What size compared too penn 6/0. Thanks
@MattsSaltwaterFishing3 жыл бұрын
The HXW pretty much holds the exact same line as the Penn wide 4/0 (113HLW) ~500 yards of 40lb mono. The Penn 6/0 (114) probably holds around 650 yards of 40lb mono. That being said the HXW is a better reel because it's an all aluminum frame, more drag and 2 speed.

Are the hwx good for casting from the surf on a jawbone 1052
@MattsSaltwaterFishing3 жыл бұрын
I cast mine on my Double Wall Gator and Jawbone 1052 in the surf just fine. If you want maximum casting distance then a smaller reel would be better.

@@israelg.3634 no I have not. Generally speaking; smaller, lighter reels cast further. I know the Daiwa Sealines, Saltists and Penn Fathoms are great casters. I got the HXW for the drag, line capacity and 2 speed capability, I didn't get it thinking I was gonna win long distance casting tournaments. What do you plan on casting? 8 ounce weight with a mullet head? Or are you trying to send a double drop shrimp rig with a 3oz weight to the 3rd gut?

Matt what reel would you recommend for bull reds in the surf and at bob hall and small sharks in the surf also my budget is 150 thx
@MattsSaltwaterFishing6 жыл бұрын
Trippy Man I would probably either go for a Penn 4/0 or a Daiwa Sealine XSHA 50 (or whatever size you want) they can be had for less than $150. Or you can step up to the Daiwa Saltist for a little bit more $. The Sealine and Saltist cast great, the 4/0 you need to practice to get it down.

Hey brotha I decided to buy a big spool of this line. I've read good things about it but first heard of it from this video here. My 2 diawas sha30 I use 20lb stren. It has worked great . Caught 40in + drums and good size reds with no problem. I just work the drag. I would use thicker line but of course I will get less yardage because my reels are not that big. But anyways My question to you for the pound that I use only hi vis yellow and smoke blue are available. How's that yellow working out for you?
@MattsSaltwaterFishing5 жыл бұрын
The line has been working great for us. It seems to be a little more limber compared to 40lb Sufix. We actually just ran out of this (Momoi) line and I bought a huge spool of 40lb Sufix Superior because I got a really good deal on it. Imo you can't go wrong with either one of them. If you plan on using it during the day in the Summer then I wouldn't recommend the hi-vis yellow because you might get cut off by the Spanish Mackerel or Kingfish. If you are using for Bull Reds around this time or at night then the hi-vis works great. Shine a flash light and you can see your line at night great.
@johnnycortez465 жыл бұрын
@@MattsSaltwaterFishing I usually do fish at night. Smoked blue was another option. I'm just on the fence about either 20 or 25 pound. 25 pound I will lose about 30 yd or so.
@MattsSaltwaterFishing5 жыл бұрын
@@johnnycortez46 if you are fishing at night and around other people the hi-vis line comes in handy to see if you are over or under someone. Me personally I like using a little bit heavier line so I would go with the 25lb or 30lb. I use 20lb on my Ambassadeur and it's been working great but idk if I want to try and stop a Bull Red with it. Lol

Trippy Man look at the penn squall star drag 12 or pen squall star drag 15. Both are magged and are great for bull reds in the surf and pier. They have the HT100 drag system as well. They are around $135. Look them up on YT

Which Avet would be good for small sharks like 4 foot, from the surf
@MattsSaltwaterFishing6 жыл бұрын
Ruben Olivo you don't really need a lot of line for small sharks up to 4' so you can get away with using the Avet SX. The SX is a tiny reel and me personally I would probably go with the Avet MXL and run braid with a casting topshot of 30lb mono or so. Or step it up to the Avet LX and run straight 40lb mono which would probably hold around 300 yards.
@rubenkayaks24696 жыл бұрын
The mxl only has 14lbs of drag or does that realy matter
@MattsSaltwaterFishing6 жыл бұрын
Ruben Olivo go find a scale and actually measure what 14lbs of drag actually feels like. It is a lot more than you think. If 14lbs of drag doesn't stop a 4' shark in its tracks then it probably won't get far lol. On my Avet HXW 5/2 I have it set to 10lbs at strike and 16lbs at full. This last fall/winter I was horsing in Bull Reds with about 8lbs of drag in heavy current.

Thank you for the kind words. The Avet has been cranking in Bull Reds and Big Black Drum with ease, waiting to hookup to a Big Tarpon and put that low gear to work. Unfortunately the rod builder that built all our rods no longer builds rod, he built some even prettier than the ones shown.

Matt's Saltwater Fishing Being from corpus i fished everywhere. Including Bob hall on a regular basis. I hit the channels during drum season. Then hit the surf the rest of the yr. Just can't find nobody
@MattsSaltwaterFishing6 жыл бұрын
Fred was the one that built those rods. I know there is a couple of people that build nice rods in the Corpus area. If you have Facebook you can try contacting Ralph Contreras he makes Wicked Lagoon Rods and does nice wraps on surf rods. You can also try and contact GVC Custom Rods and Rod Repairs the young man's name is Valen and he does nice wraps on rods as well. It sounds like you have all the badass reels now you just need some nice rods to pair them with.

Would a penn squall 15 maged work in the surf and at bob hall peir for bull reds and small sharks
@MattsSaltwaterFishing6 жыл бұрын
Trippy Man didn't realize the squall was magnetic (on the star drag 12 and 15 size). The Squall 15 can definitely work for Redfish and small sharks holding 190 yards of 20lb mono. I personally prefer a larger reel that will hold more yards of heavier mono and would probably opt for the 40 size but that one isn't magnetic cast.
