Is there a polite way to correct a family member's English? For example, my mother's. She says "take surgery." My mom left school when she was 16 yrs old and has not returned. I have been a life-long learner currently working on my third advanced degree. Unfortunately, my mother thinks she is the smartest person on the planet. I often restate her statement...do you mean have surgery? But she ignores me and repeats the same thing..."take surgery."
