Last year when I did my fall pond clean up I found a single juvinale goldfish that I hadn't put in there. I had 3 fancy goldfish and a single butterfly koi (it was a rescue) and somehow this group produced a hybrid. The juvinale had the body of a fancy(short and stocky) and the long flowing fins of the koi. I didn't know known fancy and koi could breed together. Just a random story I thought I'd share, good day everyone.

Those are beautiful Koi and goldfish! I agree “milking” is cruel why not let them breed naturally...oh yeah I forgot about the greed factor! 😏

I have a big 3 years old female blackmoor , I have zero intention to breed her but I enjoy watching videos of goldfish breeding . It’s a beautiful thing to do if one has the space and the time .

Hi Mark, understand that this may be cruel to hand spawn but sometimes it is necessary. My goldfish can get a bit aggressive when spawning so I have to hand extract the eggs. last time my female goldfish gets flesh wounds when they bred. Hand spawning does not require a lot of pressure if the fish are ready to spawn if anyone actually attempts it. But I too much prefer the use of spawning mops I get a higher success rate. keep up the good work can't wait for more videos.

Hi Mark learnt a lot from your videos. I have a query do you ever put any antifungal in water/fish tank which houses the egg laid. What can we use as antifungal to prevent eggs or should we use snails for them to do the job of cleaning up unfertilised eggs.

Going to the effort of getting another tank can’t I just stick the mop in there and leave it in with my normal fish? Not exactly trying to mate them but it would be nice to see.

Do u have to put a filter in with the eggs and fry?

If you have a sponge filter that is completely cycled put it in. Or cycle one before breeding ok.

If you are running a commercial hatchery where big numbers of fry is the bottom line then I'm sure it makes sense to hand strip the fish to minimise losses but for the average aquarist who's looking to just raise a few or even a couple of hundred it's far better for the fish to go the natural route as you have done. Apart from anything else it's great to watch the parents spawning, something you miss out on by stripping.

If you put a tray in the bottom with spacers in the corner, then put a screen on top and place the mop on top of that you will grab more.

Cruel? Chinese who invented the fancy goldfish have been doing it for centuries. These common fish don’t need to be squeezed. They are basically still very wild.
