I don't know what kind of person would dislike this! In under 30 seconds, John Sheehan had the whole place clapping, dancing and generally enjoying themselves! Now, that is entertainment!

Well, it is interesting, or should be of interest to those who try to push petty nationalism through folk music. btw. The Dubliners never did this and were/are perfectly aware of the origins of the music they played and the connections of all the traditional musics of the British Isles. "The Irish washerwoman" was originally an English country dance tune called "The country courtship". During the 19th century it gained the name "The washerwoman" or similar, ending up with the name "The Irish washerwoman" in, I seem to remember, American sources and publications. Now, does this mean the Irish aren't allowed to play it? Of course not. Does it mean it can't be picked up and incorporated into Irish folk music styles and dances etc. Of course not. What should be instructive is that they can so easily do so. It demonstrates the close affinity of English folk music with Irish folk music. If the Irish avoided all tunes with any English associations (and vice versa) then there would be very little left. This is not to say that there aren't distinctive folk styles and traditions in Ireland (and in different parts of England too), but it is to say that trying compartmentalise them in modern petty nationalist terms is a hiding to nothing other than a distortion of reality. ps. All of the above is also true of Scottish, Welsh etc folk traditions.
