I used to think this, but his movies glorified wealthy people, and rarely had any minorities or people in the lower social economic strata. These movies worked because they weave a fantasy about how it is to live when you have money for an audience of people who are blue-collar and such. I’m not saying the movies are bad, but if some of these things had been addressed in the script, then they would be immensely better.

The production only had one take in downtown Chicago for the scene. The city of Chicago only allowed bthem enough time, which was one day, to completely set up and completely dismantle. There were more cameras set up for one scene of a movie that had ever been done before so to be able to get every angle and every impromptu move by the crowd. It’s unimaginable to think that something that large scale could be pulled off with one take and come out so absolutely perfect. It’s one of the greatest scenes in comedy in the modern era. Hail to Ferris Bueller.

they advertised on WLS radio to come down to the very real Von Steuben Day Parade and be an extra in a John Hughs film - about 10,000 additional people showed up, providing great long shots. The bewilderment seen on the reviewing stand officials is genuine, as they slipped their own float into the middle of the procession! Additional scenes were then filmed on a soundstage just adjacent to the route. The construction worker on the scaffold was real and impromptu.

This scene perfectly encapsulates why older movies are better than what's being made today. Studios would never take a chance on having this many actual human beings in a single scene. If they can't CGI it, it's not happening. Not to mention the emotion conveyed in the scene. Today, you're either supposed to laugh at weak, elementary humor, or feel crippling sadness. Happiness isn't something studios today want you to feel.

Yeah, he gets his way throughout the movie, but his intentions aren't malicious, he's just a kid who wants to have fun with the time he has with his friends. That's the most likeable depiction of a teenager I've seen on film, cuz I could only imagine kids seeing this movie and wanting to be like Ferris. Riding a cherry red ferrari, getting into a fancy restaurant, dancing ON the parade float! I know I'd wanna do all that. Plus, look at the way everyone in the crowd is dancing with him! He's not only giving his friends a memorable time, he gave the whole city a time to remember and I love that! God, I'm so glad I watched this movie last night, what a great time :)))

I'm listening to Paul Hirsch's autobiography, "A long time ago in a cutting room far, far away...." (via audiobook), right now and he's at the part discussing the parade scene. Paul edited "Ferris Bueller's Day Off", "Footloose", episodes IV and V of the Star Wars movies and many other films over the years. It's cool listening to him talk about how he put scenes together. This particular scene had a lot of jump cuts which worked out really well when put together. He said there were 3 takes of the "Twist & Shout" song used to get the right amount of coverage needed. He said the release of the balloons happened after the 3rd take and the energy seen in the movie was completely authentic even after the same song being played 3 times. I recommend others who love these movies to either find the audiobook or the book itself. Hirsch doesn't narrate the audiobook himself, but the narrator (Richard Ferrone) makes you forget its not Paul.

Gen X had films like these - with Ferrises and Camerons (and there's many films like it with memorable and relatable young characters), it's stuff like this that really shapes a generation.

Awesome, funny 80's movie with a great message. Life moves pretty fast. If you dont stop to look around once in a while, you could miss it. Always loved this movie. Weird Science was another classic 80's comedy movie too.

I find it sweet that Cameron and Sloane are holding hands at 0:04 and 1:26 and Ferris doesn’t care.

They’re just friends, Ferris knows that. That’s his girlfriend and his best friend, there’s no reason for Ferris to be mad or anything. Plus, Sloan doesn’t seem to care that Ferris is dancing and flirting with the girls on the float. They love each other and trust each other.

This scene is one of my favorites and also the work of art montage from this movie. Good stuff. I come back and watch this every now and then because the pure joy it makes me feel like i'm involved and there.
