Probably not because I bet its harder to find accessories/stuff for that fork than a Fox or RS, especially here in Finland 🇫🇮 👍🏻
@christianholmstedt87706 жыл бұрын
Thx for reviewing the fork. I went from a RS Pike RCT3 to the MRP Ribbon Air mainly because I was disappointed with the harsh feel of the Pike. It also leaked air into the lowers causing it to get even worse. Had to use the old 'zip tie through the seals' trick to bleed the lowers and frankly that is BS on a +$850 fork. Got it repaired and decided to just cut my losses and sold it. The Ribbon has two bleed valves on the lowers in case you need to equalize the pressure when changing altitude. The key thing with this fork (Ribbon) is the separate Pos/Neg spring adjustment. Like you mentioned the Ribbon is super supple. The complaint about diving when pumping through corners might be valid, I don't ride like that, but you can remedy this by lowering the Neg spring pressure. Doing that will make it feel more like a Pike. It looses the initial suppleness but gains stability/stiffness for pump style riding. The fork is not really a revolution because both RS and Fox used to have separate adjustments for the Pos/Neg spring but they took it out to make the fork easier to tune. You could say they dumbed it down for riders who can't or don't care about tweaking their forks. It's a shame because this adjustment is absolute key. I run 10% more Neg pressure than Pos to get that buttery smooth feel. With Pos/Neg equal is firms it up quite a bit in the initial travel. Really like the Ramp Control too. It is a mistake to say it works like a volume spacer because it really doesn't. It works more like an air damper. A quick suspension movement will be damped and it feels like the fork is very progressive. A slow deep motion will not be damped very much. It does however work great.

@axiomic5 жыл бұрын
Agreed. My biggest issue with my air suspension, front & back, is that here in Sydney the day will often start cold and then can easily reach 30+ degrees C before midday and the heat then greatly increased the suspension pressure. By this time in the ride I'm often already tired, and then the bike becomes like a hardtail !! I have to keep a shock pump with me and adjust on the fly... otherwise the ride becomes completely unenjoyable.

Well Cane Creek and Ohlins both make great forks as well. My recommendation would be to dig into all of the unique adjustments that are offered by all three of them. seems like that ramp control would be super sick in a 36 grip2. youd have uber amounts of tuning for alot of different types of riding. pick the right frame and something like a float rear shock, though may be over kill on the rear. throw on the new i9 hubs. nice weight weenie but still durable build kit. also kinda sounds like MRP could make a really good DH fork. with a bit of work probably something better then the other options.

@christianholmstedt87706 жыл бұрын
@Logan Mulally It's dead easy to set up. Do this: Open up Compression setting. Open up Rebound setting. Empty Neg air spring. Empty Pos air spring. Set Ramp Control to minimum. Fill Pos air spring to recommended setting for your weight. It's not the end-all-be-all setting but a good start. Fill Neg air spring to Pos pressure +10% for plush buttery smooth setup. Use +5% for slightly firmer setup. Dial in rebound damping. Higher spring pressure needs more rebound damping. Try riding off a few curbs. Hit the trail and adjust rebound until it feels good. Dial in some compression damping if you need. Play with the controls and get a feel for what happens. Same with Ramp Control. On smooth trails with no super chunk I don't think you need much if any. I rode Sedona and just had a few clicks of Ramp Control and about 3 click compression.

Fork lockouts for anything other than xc is the most pointless thing I can imagine. When riding enduro, you sit down and pedal up the hills (seated pedalling causes no Bob) and then you gun it down the hill. But if you're really worried about a "lockout" these forks have low speed compression adjust, winding it all the way on will be the same as turning on a lockout but I personally would never use it for that

I've been thinking about getting a coil one, 140mm travel for my Kona BigHonzo... but would't it feel weird on a hardtail, if so much of the travel is that easy to dive through? Without rear suspension the dynamic geometry would be changing constantly :o What do you recon?
@MRPBike6 жыл бұрын
I had almost the exact same question from another rider the other day. Personally, at 140mm I generally prefer air. At that travel length, with coil it can be a challenge to balance desired sag and bottom-out performance. As well, most hardtail riders gravitate towards air as the more progressive stroke suits them more naturally. But, some gnarly hardtail hardcores like firm suspension (minimal sag) and the ability to, um, defer maintenance, and thus are all-in on coil.
@kubagajda73476 жыл бұрын
@@MRPBike Thanks! I'm actually more about comfy cruise over rough stuff, that's why originally I tought that coil might be a good choice, but i see that maybe I'd be better with just a DebonAir upgrade for initial stroke plushnes and something like 6 volume spacers for a nice ramp-up

There is a slight squish/hiss sound during compression. More compression damping = more sound. I don't pay attention to it but it's there.

@@christianholmstedt8770 Thanks! Too late though I went with a Lyrik :)

I’m really interested in this now, what you call “Suicide” trail looks like most of the trails around me.

Us too. We do the majority of our riding here in Grand Junction, Moab, SW Utah, and Sedona. That's why we prioritize rock chomping performance.

Think you meant to say manually adjustable positive and negative air chamber and I believe Cane Creek came out with this before MRP but they probably weren’t the first ones to do it either. Don’t mind me though just a Cane Creek fanboy, their Helm deserves some more love

RS and Fox used to have this many years ago. They dumbed it down.... sadly. This is not a revolutionary feature but it is the key feature. Love the Ribbon, came from Pike.

I thoroughly enjoy your impressions but the holding factor, spring or air accounts for 30-40% of the shocks total control. The rest is dampening and rebound both high and low speed. Fox and others will soon upgrade the bike world to the standard used in full-size vehicles and motocross world. We need to keep things simple and maintenance free, however the issues you describe are quite easy to accomplish with complete fork and shock package.

Most forks have positive and negative air chambers, they're just balanced internally. RS used to have separately filled chambers but moved away from this design. Neither design is better - each has pros and cons.

But, when they are separately adjustable, you can tune the fork to your terrain. Want more support for flow trails and pumping berms like he talked about = add more pressure to the negative side. Hitting big hits/jumps and super fast flow = add even more pressure to the negative side. Riding chunky rocky slower terrain = reduce the pressure in the negative side. Lots of in-between settings and you can play with pressures in both chambers to get it right where you want it. Then it has ramp control built in which is an upgrade to both Fox and Rockshox. It's also a twin tube design which is an upgrade from Rockshox and Fox. I'd say the MRP is actually better.
