Jonathan Ross, for international audiences, is like the Jay Leno or David Letterman of UK tv. He was once the highest paid talent at the BBC before being pouched by a rival TV company. He’s a notorious geek, collector, used to have a film review show on the BBC (he gave Spirited Away FOTY and thus got me into Ghibli) and his wife is a writer-producer responsible for films like Kick-Ass and Stardust.

Um Jammer Lammy to me is one of those weird little thresholds we pass through in life. For me, it was finally having my own things and being able to pick and buy and rent and choose whatever games and movies I wanted. I was in a household with 3 boys and I was the youngest. So while it always showed me cool movies, shows, and games that I still treasure today, I never got to discover things on my own out of my own curiosity. I was nothing more than pretty much a recorder for my older brother's discoveries. Then around the late 90s, my brothers were older, had their own friends, and were chasing girls, and got jobs and cars. So they were never really home like they used to be. So I started having free rein of the PS1, and rentals and music etc. That is when I started discovering things on my own volition. And that's where Um Jammer Lammy and things like it kicked in. I would never have been allowed to rent it or buy it or anything, because that isn't something my brothers found interesting. But I loved it. I remember a few years later when I got a job and was old enough, I also got PaRappa the Rapper. That's why I say Lammy is like this little line I crossed into independence in terms of being able to discover things on my own and not being at the mercy of older siblings.

Here's what's weird. I'm 40, from England, and Jonathon Ross has been on TV in some capacity for the entirety of that it feels like. In the early days, I just had the opinion of "he's alright... he's not my favourite, but I don't mind seeing him on my telly". If someone were to say "National Treasure", back then I woulda been like "who? This guy?" But then, as time has gone on, I've appreciated him more as a host and personality. The dude is funny. And then, all of a sudden, I see late night Channel 4 shows about the history of Japanese toys and popular entertainment media... which is basically a one-man show hosted by someone who I can see has an absolute passion and knowledge for the subject. And then I see him talk "World of Warcraft" with a couple of his guests on his talk-show, and Vin Diesel kinda replies like "yea alright, like _this guy_ knows about WoW...", to which Ross replies with "yea, I don't know _much about it..._ but I do know my wife has a Spectral Tiger Mount...". And Vin's eyes light up like "this dude is for real." And then... I'm into comic books... and guess who's written comic books? Like... NOTHING surprises me any more about Jonathon Ross. He is someone who, over time, I've found I've more in common with as a long-time nerd, than his celebrity status would suggest, and someone who I'd love to sit down and nerd out with.

I never knew about this parappa arcade port. When i think of parappa oddities would be the VHS collection of the parappa show, and a toaster that makes art on the toast. And those go for hundreds of dollars, i wouldnt want to know an auction price on an um jammer lammy arcade

If I could, I’d open my own gaming hotel! Yes I know there’s one over in The Netherlands and also one somewhere in Asia (probably Hong Kong, Taiwan or Macaw) but I’d love to see a gaming hotel here in the UK: a hangout where likeminded gamers can enjoy 80s, 90s and 2000s video games together, each console given the proper maintenance needed to keep functioning and plenty of arcade games common and rare as well! Also, I’d provide the hotel room TVs with free-to-air channels from other countries including RTÉjr (Ireland), Gulli (France) and Kika (Germany) and even include a selection of Netflix and Apple TV+ original movies and shows guests can stream at no extra cost! (At the turn of the decade my local train company had Prime Video programming available to stream for free via the onboard wifi!)
