Thanks, Could you answer a few questions? OK so I watched your video where you told us there where too many questions and to google up etc... for the answers. Totally understand. Took your advice. Did my home work and got my answers. 1958 9" Model B. I do have one question. I need to know how to stop buying lathes. Just got into the hobby and I know own 8 lathes and I am looking at three more next week. Oh and what state are you from? Thanks, steve.

Welcome to the world of long beds. I guess a vidio of the making of a thread dial would be a good one. Why in the world, it seems only SB 9s& 10 thread dial prices shot through the roof. You have all the plus's in my book you will love it. Thanks

I got interested in machine lathes from watching Keith Fenner's channel. Started looking on craigslist to see how much they were. Not long ago I saw a South Bend lathe that was similar to this one (can't remember what model it was) but it had been lovingly restored. It looked perfect in every way. I have a feeling that it was more than just a "DuPont Overhaul" too. Seller was asking 2K for it. As I said, it looked perfect. Thanks for posting this vid.

Mr. Pete I need to warn you about the casters! There was a guy on one of the machining forums trying to move his lathe in a similar way. He forgot for a moment how top-heavy and unbalanced a lathe really is. As a result the lathe fell on his feet breaking many bones. The guy had to spend the better part of the year on a hospital bed and was lucky to be able to walk again. So please make sure there is no way for the lathe to topple over. Apparently lathes don't need much encouragement to do that.

Did you get any tooling with the purchase? I assume you have enough in hand to outfit the machine. My first lathe was a Southbend 10" heavy, sold it when I got my 14" Clausing. The main reason was the variable speed control, love my Clausing, but I do miss my first love, the Southbend.

Hi Mr PeteI was fortunate to find a really nice South Bend 9a 4.5 ft. in South Bend. Nice condition. Has pretty light wear (gears in gearbox are almost like new) ,decent original paint and an original embossed nameplate without even a scratch on it!...The owner must have kept the nameplate covered up or something?... The seller said he had tons of calls about it but I was the first to respond and he held it for me. I'm from the Chicago area and late one night on a whim I decided to take a look at the south bend Indiana craigslist and see if there were any South Bend lathes available and there it was.... The ad had just been posted a few minutes prior. I emailed him immediately and said I wanted to buy it . Picked it up over the following weekend .......This is unrelated to the subject but I just watched your series on the horizontal bandsaw and it was very informative but you made no mention of power hacksaws?... I own a couple and they work pretty well. They make a nice clean cut , are easy to use , don't have to worry about breaking/rewelding blades or cutting yourself uncoiling them ,blades are cheaper , they have more of a "fun factor"(interesting to watch like a shaper). The only downside is they are slower but for most of us in home shops that is not really a big problem.

I found a 9" with a 4ft bed. Called Southbend and asked them how test runout and set it up. Came with the original wood bench. It mic out to .0002 according to the way south bend told to test it. Had to buy $400 hundred dollars worth of tools to do it though. Found a retired Machinist at the flee market who sold used tools and he helped out plenty. With lots of micrometers and some tooling, I paid $750!!!!

I love the SB Model A. Anybody who has ever used one would love it too. Your tailstock body looks different than the SB tailstocks I am familiar with. I wonder if it is original. The SB tailstocks that I have seen are two piece with a plate on the bottom that rides on the ways and the vertical alignment can be adjusted by using shims between this plate and the tailstock body. It doesn't look like this tailstock has two pieces. I'm looking forward to your videos on the SouthBend.

Hiya Tubalcain! I'm starting to fit a back plate to my headstock & could not determine what kind of a fregister it would be appropriate. From what I've read, one school of thought is that the register is not really vital, as the shoulder where the plate mates with the back plate is the critical fit & needs to be scraped. Another school of thought is that the register is absolutely critical & should be +0 & -,0005. Any thoughts? Thanks very much for your videos, I've learned a lot. Jon

Great video. I have a south bend like that one except my lathe has an extra plate under the head stock, tail stock and compound. Have you seen that before? I also got a steady rest with the lathe but I don't know how or if it will work on this lathe. Also, I got a taper attachment with the lathe, is there a different feed screw nut that should have come with it so it can be disconnected without taking it all a part? The south bend book makes it sound like you just remove a bolt and it is discon

I just purchased a book specifically made for restoring this model and several others . im kinda worried about the fact its completely disassembled , the tail stock alignment may be a huge job for me as i have never done it . im gonna paint it with light grey primer and clear coat the entire thing and repaint and sand the brass Lable plates. also gonna refelt all the oil ports

+mrpete222 Mine has a 240 volt motor { the shaft seems bent} , do you think a good 120 volt motor would be strong enough ? Theoretically 3hp is the most power you can safely supply on a 20 amp circuit but im worried it wont be enough torque , i mean i have brought bench grinders to a halt with very little work pressure so im kinda concerned that im gonna need 4 or more hp to run at high rpm .

Nice find and at a great price!! Has all the good stuff: in cabinet drive, v-belt pulleys, large dials. I have a SB 9A, with small dials, horizontal drive, and flat belt. But I do love the old beast. Thankfully, mine has pristine ways. It would be a great service to other SB owners if you show a remove and check of the quick change and the apron. I had to figure it out on my own. Also maybe remove of the headstock and replacing wicks?
