For anyone watching this with any hesitate, dont worry. Southbend 9 aprons are super simple. If you have trouble remembering locations, take a couple pictures but you really shouldn't need to. Go for it.

Yes you are right they do seem pretty complicated but are relatively straightforward. I made this video because although each assembly is easy when you look at the whole thing it is pretty complex, especially for anyone just getting into machining. Take care, Boone

Definitely the best video on how to rebuild the apron. Do you have any vids of rebuilding the other components on the SB9? Just wondering what you use for way oil as well? Only real way oil I can get is sold in 5 gal quantity, so I'm looking for an alternative, heard engine oil work well

It’s good quality stuff. You definitely could use motor oil but this is a higher grade oil that smells less and is easy to clean up in the cold. Also the bottle is great for application.

Thanks for this. Very clear instructions. I need to tear in to my 9C apron. There's lots of slop when the lead screw engages the apron. Hope what I find isn't too big of a mess.

Boone- I’ve inherited my southbend 9” lathe from my 92 year old father, and I grew up watching him do some amazing tooling on this machine both with steel and wood, and now it’s I’m my hands at 58 years old. I have to say that your video is fully comprehensive and very helpful, especially this one as a starter. All the parts to disassemble are very intimidating, but I don’t think it’s beyond my ability. In my case there were three clips on gears. I don’t remember where the third was. It’s a little different, it has a bent tab to allow pulling it

How does the worm gear really come off. at 7:06 or so, it magically just comes out, but not really seeing how it got there.

The key inside the worm gear has a pin that goes through the barrel of the work gear into the nut. Find the pin in the nut with a small round punch and tap it out then unthread the nut. Thanks for asking

Is your lathe not painted? Did you strip it, or did it come that way? How do you prevent it from rusting? I'm restoring one of these, and I like the bare look. The paint on mine is crappy, so the idea of stripping it is intriguing. Thanks for the vid btw, this is very helpful.

It's still got some paint left on it but a lot of it's worn off on the contact places. I live in a high desert so don't have to worry about rust too much. Just keep a film of oil on it all the time and keep it covered with a natural fiber cover like canvas or even an old bedsheet. Thanks for the comment and watching! If you do end up painting Id recommend Rustoleum smoke grey gloss oil-based enamel. You can get it at home depot and it's a pretty good product.

Beautiful. Thanks. I’m trying to dismantle my cross slide on my SB 10L. I have the handle and dial off but can’t get the bushing to unscrew. It seems frozen. Any ideas on how to remove it to get the cross slide screw out? Thanks, Paul

Hey Paul! Not sure on that off the top of my head. I’d look for a tapered pin or apply a little heat and twist it in both directions with a copper shimmed set of vice grips or knipex pliers

@@boonetesterman yea, I’ve looked for a pin and I’ve taken a torch to it twice. The big problem is that I can’t fit my 1” wrench on it and the 1 1/16” is too big. Can’t get a solid grip. I’ve tried a crescent wrench and the ones you mentioned. When I put too much torque on it, the wrenches slip off. Driving me crazy Ms Daisy. Thanks.

For some reason there is no hole for a pin spanner, so I'm stuck using a wrench and some cloth so I don't scratch the collar. I'm going to try some wd-40 and heat and I'll let you know how it goes

I’m doing up my Dads old Hercus 9. What’s your opinion on repainting these old vintage lathes? Is is better to repaint or leave the patina. If leave, how best to protect the once painted surface from rust when the original paint worn off?

Excellent Question Pete! Glad you asked. That’s great you have not only a fine machine tool but family history with it. Well it really depends, If I repaint I always go stock color or as close to it as possible. Not a fan of bright flashy colors on machine tools. Rust oleum oil based enamel is my favorite. Sprayed rolled or brushed it looks great and is quite durable. I’ve found that it works better without primer on clean warmed castings (75F) in thin enough coats that it still levels out. As for leaving the paint, there is a good argument for that too. I left mine because i really like the look of oiled cast and felt like it’s worn places connected me with the previous operators habits and style. Sounds silly but paint and how it has worn really tells a great story of how a machine tool was used. Was it cleaned daily? How was it touched? Things like that are cool to preserve because they represent generations past and what those people valued. Depending on where you live you’ll have different “degrees” of vulnerability to surface rust although me living in a dryer environment I have no issue with it. If you keep it covered in a thin layer of medium weight oil you should be fine. I keep mine covered with a sheet too to keep abrasive dust off it. Hope this helps, Best, Boone.

Love the presentation. I followed your video when I cleaned up my apron on my 9A. I am having a problem though. For some reason I the clutch feed is inconsistent. It's like the clutch fighting to stay engaged. It's pulsing at the same speed as the lead screw. I took it apart at least 5 times. Does anyone out there have any idea what the issue is? Hello David, I used mineral spirits to break the varnished oil and grease. soaked them for a bit. Also a wire brush! Hope this helps Best, B
