I always get a little remorseful when i go to a auction and buy another mans tools . I think about how many years he saved those tools , and what will happen to mine ? 25 - 45 on the tool box if I couldn't look before hand. BIKERB

Sometimes its hard to accept that certain people resent other people having fun. A pernicious form of envy I expect. Regardless keep going to auctions Mr. Pete because I feel your joy. On the topic of getting bulk items distributed how about you start a Patreon account to cover the cost of shipping stuff you find. Id contribute to help ship stuff say to some mechanic in the Congo or Philippines or such. Perhaps there's an NGO that could be trusted to help. Float the idea to your viewers se what comes up.

A switched on apprentice would pay 100 for that. I’m sure if you made up boxes with decent usable tools for apprentices and hobbyists, specially just using the old tool boxes just like that one, people would love them. No frills, just a box of critical and handy tools. Whack an ‘approved by tubalcain’ sticker on the side, Sold cheap, funding the next auction. I cringe here in Australia when u say your throwing it away. I keep thinking all the stuff could help some young man start a career or spark an interest.

Lyle I believe you and I suffer from the same affliction, "can't ever have enough". That drill index is pretty neat. The SK tool box looks like it is olive drab, it makes me wonder if it was made for the military during the war. It certainly not typical SK quality. Not many WWII vets still around all in my family are gone.

When I saw that dog tag ,my heart jumped too. The serial number on the tag indicates he was drafted in the military and received his tetanus shot in 1956. US stands for inducted (drafted) and RA indicates regular Army (enlisted) . Check out how worn the hole is in the tag, he must have worn that tag a very long time. He is what makes America great. I enlisted in the Army in 1955 and my prefix was RA, however as years went on all that changed. The Army even went to SSN, but that was a dumb idea. Later on , I became an officer and my prefix was O5327###, while the officers that attended places like West Point received the prefix like RA regular army. The joke at the time after the Vietnam war was, non RA were Christmas help and the RIF was on. (reduction in force). I retired in 1975. Thank you for returning that dog tag to the family it will mean a lot. Again thank you Mr. Pete for being so respectful....Ken

@kenzpenz
@kenzpenz 6 жыл бұрын
Mr Pete, he might have gotten another set of dog tags at a later date and the service would have updated his dog tags with his most recent tetanus shot. I have several sets of dog tags with updates on most. You sent me scrambling to find my old dog tags and I managed to find only one of the original tags with the T55 . My dog tag has the elongated worn hole, but not worn through like his. My dog tag has that strange cut out on the left side of the tag, like his and a A, for blood type and P for Protestant .That cutout has a gruesome need for use when placing one tag with a deceased soldier in combat. The Army no longer uses that on newer tags. Probably more information then needed so I'll butt out. Take care ...Ken

Here in Connecticut we have a problem with the antique and antique tools flippers. They artificially jack the prices up. And tend to exaggerate the age of the items by 10-30 years to suck in the ignorant buyer. So at the average flea market I'd expect the firm "asking" price to be at $350-450. Even though it has about 40% scrap and the rest is only useful to machinists. The hacks (antique dealers/flippers both full time and the opportunist scammers) tend to only search for the big name items. And seem to value the item based only on the make. And not its condition, type, or usefulness. So I'd try to pay under $80 if possible. But to a machinist the value of that box by contents is well over 300. The new cost of those taps and dies alone has to be in the $1000 range. So in my opinion you made out with it.

Lyle, the Ajax drill stand, when cleaned up could sell for $45.00 or more by itself on Ebay....Vintage drill stands are very desirable...On the dog tag, that one was issued either just prior or during WWII, judging by it's shape.. I am a Korean War Marine veteran..joined in 1950 and my dog tags are oval in shape..Those issued after about 1952 are more rectangular with a "notch" in one edge...I am almost 86yrs old and I stated work in a machine shop in 1947..I presently have eight lathes, four of which are "suitcase" lathes and one is a 1947 South Bend 9A...One can never have too many tools!!!!! Keep those KZbins coming...I thoroughly enjoy them!!!!!

I think the Mueller drill/tap combination bit is used to make a connection to a pressurized iron water main. A large saddle is placed over the main, the hole is drilled and tapped, then the fitting is installed. There is a gate valve on the bottom and a seal on drive shank at the top that makes this possible. The drive tool was air powered.

That might be sperm whale oil. If so, it is fairly rare these days (since whaling has been banned). It is useful for lubricating tiny mechanisms like watches and indicators because it does not creep to places where you don't want it. (It is actually a wax that happens to be liquid at room temperature.) The only modern replacement is jojoba oil (again a wax rather than an actual oil). Nice haul. You seem to get to a lot of good auctions. In spite of being near Detroit, I don't see such good sales as you seem to find (possibly because I'm not looking very hard). For the S&K box, I think I'd be content at $25 and maybe disappointed at $35, and ecstatic at $15.

Park-O-Meter is in north Arkansas, they were one of two parking meter manufacturers in Arkansas. They along with Duncan meters made most of the older mechanical parking meters. That oil would have been used to lube the bearings in the internal clock mechanisms of the meters.

$100. Make the items you don't want part of charitable giving (if they are at all serviceable). A handful of those hacksaw blades would be a treasure trove in some underdeveloped country. I have some S-K tool boxes from the '30's to "40's. Very strong, particularly the ones with the nickel-plated corner reinforcements. I don't know who made them; probably the same firm that made those nice steel boxes for their socket sets. BTW, the (dreaded) draft notice in your mailbox would get you one of those metal tags. "Greetings….". Now leave your job, sell your car, close your bank account, you're coming with me.

Don't want to turn this into a rant but can sure relate to those dog tags. I used to sit in my daddy's lap and put my fingers on the bullet holes he got from a Kamikaze plane when he was in the Navy. He was in WW II and my uncle in Korea. My daddy was lucky. One of those bullets was in his left arm and one missed his heart just by a few inches. He has been gone since 1998. Kind of glad he did not have to witness the Trade Center attack. I can not express how I feel about our professional football players taking a knee during our National Anthem. End of rant.

so, for me.... it'd be worth a bit, but not a lot (I know that's vague.... but I do wood turning... I don't have a machinist's lathe, so they'd all sit in my garage for 20 years until i can finally get some machinist's tools). But at an auction around here, they'd sell for.... $100? probably upward of there. I wonder, and I know it would add a little of work, but one could make some extra videos with little editing, which would be fun to watch... but I wonder if you couldn't make a video each week (or month), where you pack a USPS "flat rate" box full of the "junk" tools you're already going to throw out, and do a give-a-way to your viewers instead, where we would pay the shipping on the box, and receive whatever you pack in it. Kind of a reverse unpacking video. That may generate some fun content, which might increase your audience - combined with silencing some of the griping from those of us in the inter-mountain west (and other areas) where these kinds of things are rare and expensive. Just an idea.

for me there were some things of interest - I liked the dies, and would keep any metric taps & dies from 17 mm and smaller and the tool steal cutting blanks. I think that the price you paid was VERY good. I just bought a plain vanilla metric 17 x1.25 tap to chase a sparkplug hole in an alum. head. I paid about $25.00 for it, so this one tap more than paid for the box you bought. I have more than enough S.A.E. cutting tools, I would lot and sell on e-bay every thing else, only then would I know the true value of everything.

First, I care not what you have. If you had one, or ten thousand, of every item in your shop, it would mean nothing too me. It only denotes extreme jealousy and envy, of those that complain about "what you have" ! Value ? "Replacement" value would be thousands of $. Used value would be in the high hundreds of $. Personal value to me ? Not one dollar more than I had to pay to get it. But, for what's there, I would think I would still be on the plus side if I had to give $100-$150 for it. More than that and it becomes problematic. Even though most of what is there, I do not have. I still think you are passing up a money making opportunity in inter-net sales. You live in an area where you can obtain things like this, at a reasonable rate, and have a large enough following to sell too. OK, so you have to the Post Office every day. Big deal. :-) Have a wonderful day.

FYI, The distributor, I notice, is a Magnetti Marelli. This is an Italian brand used on Fiat autos, and, I presume, other foreign engines. I have had a lot of experience with Wisconsin engines over the years, and have found them to be primarily Prestolite. The combination drill-tap is a Mueller, which is a company primarily associated with the AWWA (waterwoeks) industry. I would assume that it's purpose would have been installing residential lateral lines, probably with a hand powered device. Interesting!

Lyle, here's a siren, just a tiny bit larger. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gHbJiqF4rtqHh5I Don Garlits, and Robbie Coltrane. (The guy who played Rubeus Hagrid, in the Harry Potter movies.) He is a bit of a motorhead. Yes, that box was worth the $25 you gave. At least, to me. If I'd needed 3 or 4 of those taps, or even ONE of the larger ones, in the next year, that alone would have paid for the box. Good score, but your better half beat you, on her deal. steve

Just got to this one Mr Pete and yes it's hard to pass some items knowing that the scrap man is the next stop. As I don't have many of your number taps and dies and no American pipe taps or dies then think I would pay your $50 or $100 Australian As a side that tap with drill bit attached. I have a ¾ BSP version. I still remember, was the late 50's in the UK, watching workers setting up and fitting a tapping to a live cast iron gas main. This type of drill tap was hand driven in a rotating assembly, clamped to the underground cast iron pipe. First the hole was drilled and tapped, the assembly head was then rotated and a valve was then screwed in. PS. I do enjoy your videos. If only my instructors had your flair.

Mr. Pete, In my mind, there is a huge difference between what something would cost (new) and what it is worth to me at auction. 1. I will not pay more than fifty cents on the dollar for anything at an auction new or used. 2. Often what seems a good deal on the surface will be taken home and never used. So was it a good deal, or a waste of money. All that being said, I am like you, I love an auction. Gary 75-Year-Old Home-Shop-Machinist in North West Arkansas

Hi Mr Pete, that drill-tap is probably from a Talbot mains pressure water ferrel inserter, from the UK. I wish we had sales similar to yours, boy o boy, do you get some bargains. You know, sometimes, when looking through a collection of old tools like this, it's almost a biography of a mans working years. Broken things that have a memory moment from his youth, perhaps. A touching look back into the past. Thanks again, Pete from the IOW, UK.

I enjoy watching these particular videos of your tool hunts. As to what the box is worth; I believe I would have bid up to $50.00 for the box and maybe even higher If I got Auction Fever while I was bidding. I attend the local flea markets regularly though the Summer months and I see a lot of the small tools that were contained in the box. Usually those tools sell for a dollar each. So, if the contents of the box was priced out at a dollar each, you have struck a gold mine. Problem is; it would take the rest of your days to realize the "gold". Best Wishes and keep the good videos coming.

You said something about how the value of these boxes depends on the person. I find it a lot on eBay. Tools that i might give away selling for $40-50 a piece, and lots of tools worth hundreds that end up going for roughly the same price. I try not to spend more than $100 on a lot, and even then I hesitate. Buying tools with other peoples Initials and drawers full of garbage Irritates me and I normally end up feeling like i overpaid for someone elses used junk. All kinds of perspectives though, and sometimes you end up with some really good stuff. I might have shot for $60 for that box. Not a whole lot in it I need, but if i could get it for that I wouldn't feel like i was wasting too much money you know.

Mr. Pete. Is there any chance that you would do a video on milling cutters, and more specifically how to tell if they are “good or not” and if they are sharp. I have a bunch of old end mills that I’ve acquired at auctions and garage sales. They feel sharp, but they might be garbage; how do you tell/check? Great video! I have a siren as well off of a vintage fire truck and a bell from a railway crossing..... it appeals to the 8 year old in me. Please give us lots of heads up on the date for the “meet and greet”. The meuller tap at 26:15 is for a Meuller tapping machine (for tapping water lines while under pressure). Likely for ductile pipe, not steel, and meant to be turned by hand. I have not done it, but have watched it a good number of times. Nice box. I'd say $25 is fair. I like rules and, within limits, can never have enough taps and dies in special sizes. They can be sharpened, at least well enough for one job when you need that one special one.

I would pay 50 Euros for that. By the way, just because something that is useless has not been thrown away doesn't mean its been 'kept'. It is simply in a state of pre-being-thrown-away. That is an important distinction. My house is full of stuff like that.

You should set up a give away where subscribers can recommend a young person who is getting into the trades and could use a starter set to get them going. Similar to the draw Keith Fenner has done. I'm sure people would donate items either nee,used or home made to help out. Patreion support would be good to help with shipping the tool kit to it's new owner. Personally I wouldn't have bid on that box but in my area would probably have gone for $100.00, but to but everything new would cost over $1000.00.

Great deal on the tool box hard to find good used machinist tools, mostly hard to find old machinist tools in Michigan too many active mechanical trades people seem to snap them up quickly at full market price. Most of my vintage Starrett tools come from California, New Jersey, or New England states which seem to be de-industrializing rapidly and shop metal working tools do not seem to be highly valued by the estate offspring.

well if i was bidding on it unseen so to speak like you...i would say, i'll try for 5 bucks no more...which means i will go to 15 but in the heat of it i would be at 25 before i backed off. it's probably worth more easy, but i have so much stuff already. both junk and good. to be truthful i really don't need anything more like that. i can outfit both my kids when i am gone and they will still need to get rid of lots of it. it's just so hard to not pick up well made (possibly) metallurgy though. and that is why i have to thank you sir. i can see yer plunder and enjoy the heck out of you going thru the boxes. i really do enjoy that, and i don't have to hear the wife telling me "what are you going to do with that stuff, yer shop is already overflowing." thank you for sharing.

What is the box worth? For a person with a well equipped shop and the means to buy and keep good tooling the box would not be worth much. To the hobby machinist on a very limited budget and in an area where this kind of stuff doesn't show up often, it's a gold mine. That said it is easy to spend too much time and effort cleaning and sharpening some tools or use poor quality tooling and produce poor results. My opinion is if you need it buy a new good tool, if it is for one time use or a job that eats tools (rough cast iron, tools that need modified for a special job, etc.) use the sale stuff.
