I really enjoy you being in detail that probably comes from teaching in high school for the years that you did that. But good instructors help to turn out good machinist and I really appreciate what you do.

I just purchased an Atlas 10" and thanks to you and your dedication to the craft, I was able and confident enough to do all of the necessary cleaning and adjustments. I have even become quite proficient at swapping out the change gears. You are correct the Atlas lathe is a great machine. I know I have said it in many other comments but I'm going to say it again. Thank you very much for the time you spend creating these videos and sharing your knowledge.

In regards to indicating, I enjoy the mention of one's own ingenuity coming into play. Awareness of there being many ways to skin the same cat is a golden opportunity to see and think of things from different angles and perspectives. A mindset in and of itself which seems highly conducive to machining as a whole.

In the shop I work in, spending too much time setting up for an operation or chasing a mechanical fix too far down the rabbit hole is referred to as "making it a life long project" or "going to the science fair." I really like how you stopped and said "or to the degree of accuracy that is needed"

I am curious that you didn't rotate the spindle 180degrees to be sure that the faceplate is square. I have had faceplates that were not true, and needed a facing pass to true them up. Thank you again for your great videos! Ray
@danermer2955Ай бұрын
If you were looking for greatest accuracy, would you be better off using a collet holder instead of a 3-jaw chuck with a spindle square to tram the mill attachment? You've mentioned in many videos that 3-jaw chucks may not hold the work on the same degree of accuracy as a 4-jaw or collet. From those videos, a true piece of stock, like drill rod, shows some variation on rotation when measuring perpendicular to the axis of rotation (i.e. it's eccentric). Is the work piece's axis of rotation parallel to that of the spindle, even though it's eccentric? I would think so, unless the jaws are damaged / belled. Theoretical question, since I don't own a mill attachment, just weird engineer-brain thinking about possibilities.... Have a good one!

I need to put a milling attachment like this on my SouthBend 14 x 40. (I sold my Bridgeport for $$ and also to free up a lot of room in my smallish home workshop). So when milling, do you use the cross slide to move the workpiece into the milling cutter or clamp the cross slide and use the vertical adjustment of the attachment, only. It appears that the cross slide wouldn't have enough travel to be effective.
@mrpete2227 жыл бұрын
I use both the cross slide and the vertical adjustment. Neither one has much travel. And the attachmentis really only useful on the small work pieces. There are no set rules. Do whatever is necessary

hey teach, could one bring the tail stock up against the back of the attachment to help in making it a bit more ridged? of course as you feed in you would need to use the tail stock quell as well.
@flugschulerfluglehrer7 жыл бұрын
Hi David! The moment you move your work piece from left to right any center in the tail stock would sieze up. But you could mount a flat stock in the back of the milling attachment and build some adaptor fot the tailstock, so that you would have a second flat stock pushing against the first one. I think this could result in much better rigidity. Anyway, I like the idea, David.

Interestingly, last summer I purchased a 12" Craftsman lathe from an older guy who was retiring from a career as a "professional handyman." It is so tight that it looks like it was never used. Came with a milling attachment, which for the life of me I couldn't figure out what it was for. Quick-change gearbox "slider shaft" was galled a little and handles wouldn't slide. Thanks to your videos, I had the confidence to take it apart and apply some fine emery cloth - violà! Perfect! Now to find some tools and measuring devices - and a Bridgeport! Lots to do .... I know your time is limited, but if possible, can you say what software you use for editing your videos? I'm a Mac guy and partial to Final Cut. Thanks for everything. I'll subscribe to your Craftsman Atlas videos.

@joetri19708 жыл бұрын
Mr Pete I know you can be a perfectionist most the time witch there is nothing bad about that but I'm curious just how bad a half of line on the protractor would hurt most projects?
@MERCKXWOOD8 жыл бұрын
It obviously depends on what you're machining.
@MrUbiquitousTech8 жыл бұрын
Half a line might not look like much as far as the protractor goes, but didn't you see just how far away that one side of the parallel was from the face plate? Quite a lot more than just a little bit! Also, as Mr. Pete's demonstrated, the milling attachments for lathes are somewhat sloppy by their nature so accuracy at the start becomes even more important in an attempt to compensate.

Another good one Mr. Pete. I have a question on acquiring a milling attachment for those of us on limited budgets and space. It seems the investment for a milling attachment with collets etc. could end up costing as much as a used Asian/chinese milling machine. Do you have an opinion on which would be a better way to go?
