Very well done. It never hurts to have back up plans. This takes a win for blurring the lines between mill and lathe, it's all just spinning and cutting when it comes down to it. You can spin a cutter much easier than a 50 pound something, so this makes perfect sense for those with no mill to be able to mill!!

Nicely done. It allows some milling at angles that would be difficult any other way. The vibration is from the overhang, just inherent in using the carriage that way. If you could get the center of cutting forces closer to the center of the cross slide it would (probably) reduce the vibrations.

Very well implemented, Good Job👍👍 Steel tends to vibrate easily, so machine beds are made of cast iron to absorb the vibrations. You could fill the connecting tube with sand that might catch some Vinbration. Or you try to make the construction a bit stiffer with some extra steel.

Excellent project. To produce such a video takes skill and time. The clarity of the video and process is excellent. Two observations if I may for viewers watching this video to learn machining operations. 1. Only use a three jaw chuck to hold machined concentric surfaces only! Holding un-machined surfaces ruins the accuracy of the 3 jaw chucks scroll or the back of the jaws scroll. If you have two 3 jaw chucks then paint one a colour for general holding. 2. Welding on a precision machine is not recommended as you can introduce arcing within the precision ball/roller bearings. Having said that you did the right thing in protecting the lathe and had the earth clamp right next to where you are striking the arc. This in no way a criticism as I admire you ingenuity and flair to get the job done. That's why I enjoy your videos. Cheers from down under Amf1

Gerday again, watching making lathe milling attachment, reminded me, when I saw you cutting a slice from what looked like 5 or 6 inch stock, I watched a CAT vid where they were fixing old worn pins. They were huge. The excervator bucket pins were bigger than the D9 ripper pins, actually wasnt CAT but never mind, they removed the plates that located and secured the CAT pins, got new steel stock & welded on the old plates. The huge excervator pins were also made from new stock so I figured they would weld up & lathe down the old pins then reharden later. But no, they simply dumped them in the trash. I'm sure they would have been recycle bins but they looked like trash bins. All the machine shops I've dealt with have caged bins out back but never even close to looking like trash. If this is the case it would be worthwile any home machinist go to Hasting Dearing and do a bit of dumpster diving. Even if you had to pay a real machine shop to lathe the 60 to 70 thou high tensile hardness finish from the rods then keep it at home for that rare job, like building a new lathe or parts. After all they say that a lathe is the only machine that can build itself. However after watching one of those new huge 5 axis C&C Machine behind glass doors, it also (I think) could also make itself as well as improvements, provided you are a good programer operator. Anyway just a thought. Peace out. Wayne

I think that if you shortened the stud coming out of the y axis housing and only used one plate to secure the vise it would be a lot more balanced, which may reduce vibration. Another issue is that the whole weight of the assembly is held in place by the two bolts designed to hold just the top slide. Making a stronger mounting system would also help, likely a lot more than just lightening the front end.
