This molasses usage keeps reminding me of when I spent two summers working in Gretna, Louisiana 45 years ago. The shop I worked in was about 1/2 mile from the Briar Rabbit Molasses factory. The Zatarains Cajun spice factory was across the street. When the wind was blowing just right....I will never forget. Not to mention every car in the parking lot was sticky. Drove through there last month, noticed the molasses factory is long gone.

I've used three of those methods in the past: electrolysis with washing soda, molasses and water, and Evaporust. I have two Harbor Freight ultrasonic cleaners, and the method I like the most for small items is to put then in one ultrasonic cleaner with a mixture of the purple formula of Simple Green and water (to clean any oil and dirt off), then rinse and move it to the second ultrasonic cleaner with straight Evaporust in it. Like the other two methods, Evaporust won't remove good metal--just rust. Molasses is slow, but it's great for large items because it's so cheap and non-destructive. I've seen videos where auto restorers put large body panels in a plastic swimming pool with gallons of molasses and water to remove rust. Also, I don't throw Evaporust away after using it. I filter it (coffee filters) and reuse it until it is too slow (which means it's exhausted.)

Most of those methods work just fine but my preferred method is soda blasting. Bicarbonate of soda clears it away perfect and leaves a rust resistant surface that lasts some months indoors a a few weeks outdoors. I used phosphoric acid prior to settling on soda blasting. Great videos sir.
@aceroadholder21858 жыл бұрын
Soda blasting works a treat on pot metal castings like carburetors. It leaves the surface in an as-new condition and won't damage colored chromate coatings. The other advantage is that a rinse with water will dissolve any soda in the carburetor passages. Other blasting media often damages the soft metal. A length of plastic hose for a soda pick-up and an air nozzle with a long snout make a good blaster. Do it out side and use a dust mask or you'll be sneezing baking soda for an hour.

Washing soda may be available in every grocery store where you live but not here in Ontario. When I tried Electrolysis I had to use baking soda; It worked somewhat slower and I had to keep my anode a lot cleaner than yours or it would stop working but it not only removed the rust but the chrome plating too!!! I have since found some washing soda but haven't needed to de-rust anything since I got it. BTW: Evap-o-Rust is pronounced like "evaporate". I use it for small items and have left nuts & bolts in it fir over a week without harming them.

I tried all methods. Citric acid acts about the same as vinegar, it's cheap too, and goes way faster. You can find citric acid in the stores "Make your own wine". I paid 2.60 $ CAD for 250 grammes, and diluted in 1 or 2 liters of water.

Thanks for saving me the time to test out some of these. I like the phosphoric acid because it leaves behind a black rust reducing layer of iron phosphate on the steel after you wash with water and actually helps if you leave it on the steel and do not wire wheel it off. I can hear the national anthem playing for the Gold medal going to mrpete222 in the rust removal Olympics :)
@6h4716 жыл бұрын
B Kailua I like phosphoric acid too. It has to be used in temps of 70f or higher to be effective though, which is sometimes a problem. Coke contains phosphoric acid, but a minute amount of it, not really enough to be effective. I've used the acid to unstick old stuck tractor engines and had good luck. Any type of penetrating oil in those cases is usually just a waste of time, as no oil will dissolve rust.

Fabulous! In my rust removal with molasses (called treacle in the U.K.) I also find black deposits on steel, so I believe it is some aspect of the treatment. It would also be interesting to compare methods to keep rust at bay. I have tried mineral oil (paraffin in U.K.), wd40, shellac & then beeswax, lacquer & recently I having been using Renaissance wax (product used in museums for armour, weapons etc, available Amazon et al.) So far the renaissance wax for my model traction engine seems the best, lacquer ok if part not subject to mechanical trauma, but the oils need regular reapplication & otherwise fail unless the part is in a sealed bag. Also thinking of using desiccants around steel models with colour indicator for when need to be heated for re-use.
@Mr_Feyshade6 жыл бұрын
The black residue could be rust converted back into iron. Years ago I saw beet molasses (livestock feed, not cookies) used for rust removal. The claim was that their commercial product made from beet molasses converted rust back into iron.
@shedasaurus8 жыл бұрын
I was always told to use stock feed grade Molasses as it has more of the active elements in, you need to suspend the item as anything at the bottom will not be affected as it sits in the gunk. 10:1 is fine anything stronger than 8:1 will blacken the metal.

Great video. I've been using Krusteaz Krud Kutter and POR15 Metal Prep to remove rust from sockets, wrenches, chisels and an old but still good tap and die set. It works very well in about 12 hours but you need to make sure the tools are submerged or else they get a black scale on them that just makes more work for yourself. I find the best part about these two products is they leave a zinc phosphate coating which will prevent rust and leaves a somewhat shiny dull silver finish. Just to be safe I then apply Starrett M1 which is a lubricant and rust preventative. Have you done any videos on rust preventative coatings? I ask because the Starrett M1 can be a little pricey and I'm wondering if do you have found anything to work just as good. Brownells did a test of rust preventatives and found Starrett M1 to be second best to Boeshield T-9 made by Boeing. Again pricey.

there is another branded liquid with the name "rust converter" , its white like milk and in my country we find it by the brand wurth. it converts the rust to a blue color and it makes something like a film to prevent it from rusting again. its little expensive though. some guys say its like phosphoric acid (like in coca cola) .

Henry VIII (King Henry the eight) had a flag ship ,called "mary rose",it was sunk,and refound ,in plyoumouth harbour,buried on the sea bed,during the uncover and subsequent restoration,parts of the ship made from iron were saved from ruin by the electrolosis method,ornate parts that would have lost much detail by mechanical or chemical cleaning,apparently ,material can be replaced via the sacrificial anode,with a proper bond,something about giving back metal ions lost in the oxidisation process. Though phosforic acid could be mixed with a little citric acid,i have not mixed these two acids before,so care should be used,though i have mixed citric acid powder with pcb etchant ferric chloride,and i have used a used branded rust removers,for my Triumph spitfire restoration now being assembled,so i have also read the warnings which say "contains phosforic acid",sometimes makers blend the stuff to work faster and also leave a zink phosphate coating on a micro etched surface for painting. The fast de-rust or etch is where the citric acid comes in. When a PCB,printed circuit board ,is made ,they can be machanicaly etched or chemicaly etched.Ferric chloride dissolves copper,zinc which alloy to "brass",steel,iron, it can etch stainless steel and aluminium,probably more. The etchant will either be sprayed against the copper clad board with a proofed material masking copper where circuit tracks will be,or submerged in a tank with an air pump feeding a bottom tube areator pipe. The spray or bubbles in each scenario clear residue from the surface of the board to reveal fresh copper to be etched away,this material is called "SMUT",in my own "bubble etch" tank,i have a mix called "the Edinburgh etchant",it was created for lithography,to help "speed up" the etching process,the citric acid is used as a "de-smut",and will etch in warm (not hot)solution ,very well . Good for parts that have hard to reach areas ,and need to be agitated frequently ,as the no smut ,no movement will create a cloud of gunk to form around the part being cleaned and takes much longer ,so seeing as most people wont have a vibrating table or proper spray/or pump application methods,the de-smut is i can assure save a lot of stress and use less of the elbow grease,just as long as none of the grease is on the part ,because elctrolyte nor acid will break surface oils down to work properly,brake cleaner or any hard surface de-greaser,use the same type of metal to hang the anode and the parts being cleaned,you dont want two types of metal in the mix,the thing may stop working ,and new solution(electrolyte)will be need,and a total scrub to clean the tank. You could clean the spanners drill a hole each end,nickel plate them ,then hang them as wind chimes,or not.
