Great video, I have been doing drawers in the kick for 25 years. If you don’t put hardware on them they disappear into the kick, and make a great hiding place for valuables. I even had a client get broken into, and nothing in their kick drawers was taken! It saved their laptops , jewelry and important files.

Okay the appliance garages sound like a nightmare 😂 You mentioned SO many workarounds to logical concerns, like… if there’s that many workarounds, some of them quite expensive, maybe it’s not logical? In my opinion, I don’t like a completely blank kitchen with focus on cabinets and counters. I think that styling is important and appliances represent the actual cooking that goes on. I think instead of requiring NASA level engineering and warren buffet level money to hide appliances, it’s better to BRING appliances into design in a creative way. They make so many different colors of appliances, styling them with a vase or with cookbooks, or even just by themselves, is a skill and way better than installing these crazy contraptions. Although younger generations are known to cook less, I think leaving appliances out will inspire people to use them more and cook more in general. Design should ALWAYS go hand in hand with functionality and life.

I've always wondered about storing perishable items (even items with really long shelf lives like oil, dried herbs/spices, vinegars etc). Wouldn't the constant heat & moisture / temp changes affect the product? I guess you could store it in nice glassware so it's more protected than if it's in plastic or metal; but I think even if it's mostly protected, if you're opening some of these items so close to moisture all the time it won't have an effect over time?

Great ideas. At 60 though with a bad back I’m not bending for any muffin pan wich can hang on a wall or be stored higher up. Balance becomes an issue too. Hips get stiff. Just store less. I LOVE my Hoosiers (old cabinets on legs) and raised mine 1-1/2” with small screwed in blocks. Bumped two different widths next to an old desk to have more counter (they come with their own counter) AND so now also two appliance garages! Mine are roll top. Very cool. Plus they have small useful drawers and an upper closed cabinet. No wall hung monstrosities. ❤

I have a corner area that I actually didn’t bother with the Lazy Susan, etc. I use it to hold very large items I feed my dogs and cats are raw diet so I use things like large Dish pans, lots of plastic food containers in a bin, trays, etc. All that fits under their beautifully along with my dish strainer that I almost never use, and a toolbox. Everything fits under there beautifully, and I would have no other large area for it to be. no, it would not work with small items, but for very large items like that it’s great. Easily accessible.

Workstation/galley sinks are available in a range of sizes. I used a 25" one in my small kitchen; it's 10" deep so washing stockpots is no problem. Most of the time the cutting board is large enough, I only have to spatchcock a turkey a couple of times a year. Excellent and practical recommendation.

You spoke absolute truth about hiring a designer. A few years back I did a favor for my friend's parents. I did all of the design work for their cabinetry, big house, countertops, floors walls...95 percent of the project, ordered it all, arranged for all of the trades, traveled back and forth to their home-an hour away and met them at my office during weekends and off hours. I oversaw the installation of so if it and was the total project manager. I only charged them $2500 and my friend's dad was offended by it. He thought I had taken advantage of them... But I helped them avoid baby mistakes and they loved their house when it was done. My friend told her Dad that he had no idea how much money I saved them and that since he loved the finished product-can't put a price tag on that.

Love your advice, it always makes sense and marries form and function. I included toe kick drawers in my new kitchen design, but the fabricator completely effed them up, along with the pullout lazy susans, so. I ended up with regular corner lazy susans (still better than shelves that are unreachable) and no toe kick drawers. Ugh.

Love your summer outfit! (Don't you just go around in despair in the summer, seeing how men dress?) Toe-kick drawers, docking drawers (if you can trust them to work properly) - All these ideas are pure genius. Sadly, since I rent, the only way to wangle more prep space was to get a wooden cutting board and drainer big enough to fit over the sink. I never want to own again, but this video made me come close to craving cool custom things over the convenience of renting. (I always wondered why Scandinavian ship builders didn't make these things standard in Europe.)

Oooohhh! I'm envious of the toe kick drawers; sounds great for flat cookware, e.g., large platters and trays, cookie sheets, jelly roll pans, etc. However, because of a lot of activity in the kitchen with lots of splashing, I would hate to have to clean all the components of that sink and the lazy susans. I designed my kitchen so there are no corners to contend with, just straight lines. Works beautifully!

Thank you for the interesting video. We have an old kitchen and when we are ready to redo it, I know what to look for. Love the idea of toe-kick drawers, we have covers and open space on the top. Our kitten tried to get there in the corner and I caught her on time! I cover the opening with foil for now. About complicated sinks, it depend on people's needs. Personally, I don't like anything on the top of my sink. I tried and learned, that we need additional space to hide these items:) They were always on my way. Fancy for display but not functional for me.

Docking drawers for a charging station won't work if the drawer has to stay open for there to be power to the outlet. I am hoping they have models that still have power when the drawer is closed. I want to put a narrow slide out cabinet by a refrigerator that has a builr in outlet. It would store and recharge a cordless vacuum with other cleaning supplies.

Question. I guess this pertains to kitchen space, but if you had a choice of either having an entryway closet or giving that space to a larger kitchen pantry which would you do? We are doing an new build and I can’t decide. Leaning towards larger pantry to gain value in kitchen and who doesn’t need more storage for kitchen items🤷‍♀️ Can add bench to entry instead.

Appliances garage is a very questionable thing. If you do not use an item often there is no need for a garage - it can sit in a drawer or on a shelf. But if you do use stuff stored there several times a day, it is a nuisance to open and close garage every time you need to use them. Quite likely the garage door will remain open which defeats the purpose. Storage on the floor easy to open and close, but to get a thing out and put it back is not so at all.

@ninaotan7811

@@keithdygert1120 My point was that in certain circumstances hiding often used appliances in a garage is a pointless exercise and the appliances are better staying on a bench. If there are two people who drink three cups of coffee each, they have to open and close garage six times a day. Not very convenient in my view. Needles to say that, for example, a Jura coffee machine has a beautiful design and a pleasure to look at. Again, my personal opinion.
