you know with all the technology of today it amazes me how in 1955 they had a big car that did 30 miles to the gallon and now days you get a 4 cylinder that cant go to 22 miles per gallon we certainly haven't gone forward in that regard

I had a 1955 Chevy Bel Air Hardtop back in the day 3 speed with a 6, put a 283 in it was a swell car and so easy to work on!

I have a 265 from a 55 sitting in my barn, the car only had 30 k miles on it . A friend bought it and took it out and put in some big ass engine, a shame. It looks like it just came out of the factory, complete with a three speed transmission. He told me you couldn`t hardly hear it run.

This video shows how much has changed over the years. In the nineteen fifties the Chevrolet with a V8 engine was considered a powerful fast accelerating car. By today's standards the 1955 Chevrolet would be considered an under powered slow accelerating car. The passage of time has changed cars a lot.

It had enough power today’s cars are over powered ridiculously so I have a Lexus 350 ES with 270 hp I only need about 150

It is necessary to look at the performance figures of the 1955 Chevrolet in relation to the time period that this car was produced. Back in that time period 0 to 80 mph in 23 seconds was fast. By today's standards this would be slow. Also the fuel economy of this car was good for the 1950's.

Interesting all the cars featured had no radio. I'll take stick with OD and the new V8, but even a 6 would be OK.

Word has it that Chevy stopped making the 283 because it was TOO RELIABLE! Probably just a myth!

Remember 55 and 56 were 265s. 283 started in 57.

GM is still building those engines. Sure they have been revised any number of times but the same foundation remains. I still remember the 1970’s when it was discovered that many OLDSMOBILE’s had so called CHEVROLET engines. Like it makes the slightest bit of difference when you start the engine and drive the car. Obviously these engines were the better of the GM family.

At 4 years old my concern was the radio. Fact the parent installed a extra batterie. So I could get away from folks and listen.

I know im using modern cars as a comparison but the inline 6 engines are just excruciatingly slow. No wonder everyone was stampeding pontiac for the GTO

"It descendants are still powering GM cars today." No offence there, but that doesn't only prove how good it was back then, it also shows the lack of engineering development in GM today. As far as I've heard of (I'm really not sure) there are many V8 engines produced to this date that use a single camshaft and pushrods.
