not really? i mean yeah they are devoted to following the letter of the law and will try their uppmost to help their client, but also they only act within an lawful evil system where to even be aware that you have a right to court and successfully leveraging that knowledge with the right people requires an sucessful DC 20 knowledge (the planes) or knowledge (religion) check (so in 5e terms i guess arcana or religion, keeping in mind the DC would probably be a bit lower in 5e to account for skill bonuses being a bit lower), and you can only do so after you have already died and are forced into the boats over the river styx

Fun fact! In 3.5, it was detailed that the Erinyes made ropes from their own hair, with which they would drag their victims up high into the air and drop them from fatal heights. Since the rope was made from their own hair, they had complete control over it. It's sad that that lore got seemingly dropped, and all we got in 5e was "some erinyes carry ropes of entanglement" :/

This and the last video gave me an idea I thought would be interesting to put in a campaign. You could have a succubus that was one of the original fallen angels of love that no longer wants to remain a succubus, but also doesn't want to return to a life of servitude in heaven. So she escapes to the mortal plane and lives a normal, not evil life there. Meanwhile there is an erinyes that is trying to find this succubus to take back to the nine hells to be punished. The erinyes will try to trick the party into capturing the succubus by acting as an angel, telling them of the horrible things the succubus has done. With enough clues the party can figure out that the "angel" is actually an erinyes and then will save the succubus. Maybe there can even be a ritual to turn the succubus into a mortal humanoid race that they discover for her.

not really? a lot of this lore is spread out over the editions, stuff changes and is retconned all over the place and it also skips the part were harvester devils also are able to do most of the things he claimed made erinyes special like the fact that they also make faustian pacts (and in fact specialize in them, with fiendish codex 2 making it seem like erinyes kinda do it for a hobby) and that those also act as lawyers in the nine hells

The Erinyes are probably my favorite lower planes creature. They have the cool fallen angel lore, the amazonian battle colony lifestyle, plus one of the truest forms of lawful. Way superior to succubus who don't even get your rocks off.

Another terrific and fun exploration! I always love that you delve into the earlier editions of D&D to flesh out your subjects raison d'être. Personally, I wonder if a historical view might be a good addition? For example, the Erinyes are a Greek myth. Basically, the Furies from ancient myth, gods of vengeance. Just a thought. :)

Apologies for long comment but I saw you hammering the succubus lore you gave as it but I had to point this out: This fallen angel succubus explanation for their creation is based on one article made during 4th ed that was basically retconed by the other lore from the novels about cosmology introduced around time of 5e; malcanthet, a demon princess, making a deal to save here kind from Asmodeus after getting(reclaiming?) godhood and yeet-ing the abyss away... also the fiendish codex and dragon mag 353 (along with what the consensus seemed to be in 2e) which already fully established their creation myth. It said "they spontaneously formed in the flesh pits of the abyss without the aid of sibrexes or obrynth lords" after armies of eladrin invaded the abyss and nearly wiped them out. Firstly abyssal origin here with their duality coming later on. Secondly, it's less retcon heavy than saying the angel thing is it. I get some like it because it's based on real world lore but it's one writer trying to explain the retcon controversy with another one vs 20+ years of lore and the most recent stuff. Plus we have enough examples of angels turned fiends in the lore with the erinyes, one of Asmodeus' "origins" and Zariel.

Side note of a personal theory/explanation opportunity that wizards has missed if they are leaning into the "demons who's queen made a deal with THE devil for free reign" route. There's some heavy implication they are the result of the battles of eladrin and obrynth and their blood mixing in the flesh warping nature of the plane creating a demon that embraces mortal beauty. Look at the trends they've been dancing around since 3e: They look like elves(paragons of beauty), with similar ears and facial features, but with a fiendish spin, elves are a race of the blood of a god who was relevantly a shapeshifter, it's recently elaborated they have had the ability to swap genders at dawn from the god(unsure how recent it was), and they are mortals who procreate which explains succubi adapting this when they were first spawned vs being made of non diety celestials who generally don't procreate that way. That's way more fascinating/ has inadvertently been implied more throughout the editions.

My long-running campaign revolves around a singular tavern located in a bustling port town on a large island continent. The tavern owner is a well respected and sometimes feared woman who winds up involved in almost every story in some capacity: she points you to a quest-giver, you have an item to deliver to her, she has a random item to give to you, she has an important piece of information you need, or she just needs a favor, to name just a few. In the five years this static world has existed, no less than 15 different parties have passed through the tavern and had their lives changed forever by the experience in some way. The owner is an erinyes that has long-ago fled from the infernal realm and is hiding out in the material plane. Her motivations are to balance the scales against the infernals and earn her place back with the celestials. The parties have all lent their aid towards her goals, but not all have succeeded in her favor. This keeps her stuck in a cycle of seemingly mundane random quests until the right tasks are completed successfully to meet her goals.

The Erinyes (Ερινύαι, plural mind you) were three godly entities of vengeance in ancient Greek myths. They appeared as old winged women with snakes tangled in their hair (like Γοργώ, Medusa, and her sisters). I assume what happened was that the Erinyes in older editions *were* an all-female group of Devils/Fallen Angels (or something similar) but for 5th Ed they changed it so there could be male Erinyes because they felt them being all-female made them too similar to the Succubi.

@@CollinBuckman But Succubi are also not all female, they change sex depending on who they want to seduce (their male forms being the Incubi), something based of medieval folklore mind you. In general, the whole concept of them in D&D is weird, except for them being lawyers and vengeful hunters of those who have sinned, this is entirely what they do in the Oresteia. In the end they even gain the name Ευμενίδαι (kindly ones), an ironic term that was meant to appease them.

I really like this one. Now I wanna homebrew a breakout Faction of erynies residing in the plane of air. Still evil core, but fading as they have left their diabolic overlords, too stubborn and haughty to seek redemption, and obsessed with the consept of their own freedom to be willing to serve the gods again. Taking the core of what an erynie is, but reframing it to a setting where they are not soldiers of a devil.
