Wish me luck for my mocks! Doing iGCSE, so mark schemes a bit different; basically, there's no marks awarded for context - which everyone finds annoying and wrong, but oh well

Hello, just a quick question: Do you think that Priestly used Mrs. Birling's character to criticise the traditional views of a patriarchal society? Therefore presenting her as a victim of that society? I'm not sure if that makes sense...but, as a side note, I love your videos. Hello! Thank you for commenting! I'll be honest and say that I wouldn't be able to mark it fully. Aside from it being a weird time, and having an urgent PhD deadline looming, I haven't marked something using the WJEC mark scheme for almost a year, so I'm a little rusty and would hate to grade something inaccurately! I ~might~ be able to give you more general feedback and areas for improvement though, but I can't guarantee it at the moment. Feel free to copy and paste your essay in response to this comment (and delete it once I've given you feedback [if I can!], if you're worried about other people seeing it!), but remember that I can't make any promises! I hope you understand?

Hi I’m just Abit confused as you say mrs hurling is middle class but the whole time in class we’ve been told she’s from the upper class and Arthur is middle class?

Hi there - thanks for the comment. Here's why I say what I say: - Class is more complex than lower, middle, and upper. There are levels within each level, e.g. lower-middle, middle, and upper-middle class. - I don't see Mrs B as an upper class character. She is definitely not on the same level as Gerald's parents, who have titles and land! - Because Mr B is 'rather provincial in his speech' (he sounds like he comes from the countryside at times) and is suggested to be a self-made man (he wasn't born into money, he earned it himself), we get the impression that he hasn't always had a comfortably middle class lifestyle. He definitely does now, and as such, I would place him firmly in the middle of middle class. - Mrs B is called her husband's 'social superior' and is clearly more familiar with etiquette and politeness and so on. This tells me that she has always had a comfortable life, probably one that was better than Mr B's was when he was growing up. Because of this, she has to be higher up than her husband is, but still lower than the Crofts. As such, I would say that she upper-middle class. I hope that makes sense!

I'd say she's upper-middle class: she's not aristocratic or wealthy enough to be considered upper class (like Gerald's parents), but is certainly from a more privileged background than her husband is ('her husband's social superior).
