About 20 years ago, I did not have a wash machine and in summer, I would hang out the clothes and put washing powder in a miracle grow bottle and attach to a hose and hose them clean, then rinse with the hose. It was all I could do at the time. I wasn't working at the time and money was scarce. Winter had to wash by hand in the sink & hang around the house.

This took me back 60 years ago when I watched my maternal grandmother make her own soap. It always smelled so fresh and clean. She was the hardest working woman I’ve ever known. I miss her so bad. I would love to know what ingredients your grandmother used. Mine great grandmother used straight up lye soap for everything- hair, body, laundry, household cleaning. I never met her, but she was a hard worker.

@@Sewmena918 she also used lye. She would set rain barrels out and dip the rain water out into a big pot. She’d boil her water and add lye and some kind of fat. I’m not sure what it was. It didn’t have a perfume smell it just smelled clean and fresh, like a morning breeze. She wasn’t a fancy woman but a very practical woman, and a Godly woman.

Floridian here, and grateful to God, for a standing home, no loss of power........ just lots of yard debris. I have a sixty foot bald cypress that shook like a ragdoll all night. The front doors rattled, and tree limbs broke and flew on the roof. After fifty years of living in Florida, you never stop holding your breath until the season is officially over. Sadly, the death toll continues to rise. You're so right Miss Lori about prayers. It's impossible for me to think of a life without FAITH, especially in times like this.

I have been making my own laundry soap for years. One batch lasts about 2 years, costs me under 10$ for 2 years ... can't beat that. I envy you the cabin on 20 acres homesteading life but I do a lot of home canning other preserving etc. in my city home. You've inspired me.

My paternal grandmother made her own soft laundry soap by saving scraps of Zest bar soap and putting them in a large plastic container made from an empty bleach jug and added hot tap water to it and mixed it together ❤ All her laundry smelled so good!

Please do some research!!! There is a difference between SOAP and DETERGENT. The homemade laundry SOAP builds up on clothes and makes them stiff. Detergent has an additive in it that pulls dirt OUT. Some claim that the SOAP clogged their wash machines.

I lived in Naples for years then moved up the coast to Punta Gorda right above Ft. Myers. I always used to keep a cooler full of water and tea after storms and linemen had to come in. Had a sign to let them know it was for them a small thank you for their time and skill. Any my husband met he would tell you come by our house for home cooked food. never knew how many I'd have to feed but thanks to my canning and prepping I always had enough. Met a lot of really nice people that way. Even some from my home state of South Carolina. Small world

My grandmother would cherish you. She made lye soap and it ate up your clean, they were clean the thin, that was her homemade detergent. She did the best she could do with 12 growing kids. My Mom was the oldest and I am the oldest grandchild, I am 70 , my Mom passed when she was 89 and I miss my grandmother she had a homemade remedy for everything. I remember boiling water for washing in a black wash pot. She had no running water in the wash house. Yes she had a house to wash in with all those kids she needed that. Remember hanging close on the line and using a stick to hold them up when it got to heavy. Loved those days. Miss my grandmother and mother,they had so many remedies and recipes for that I thank you, because you bring back memories of them both so often. God truly has blessed you and Mr. Brown to bring joy to so many people who lived it, but can’t recall it. For that I say “God Bless You and Mr. Brown “, continue your ministry to everyone 🙏🏽

I believe Zote soap is made in Mexico and is pronounced Zoe-Tay (long a sound, like in day)...I've used this soap in various ways...it's a great product. I use liquid laundry detergent, but add this in as well. A little goes a long way and adds a fresh smell to our clothes and sheets...love and blessings...Cindy

I just picked up my ingredients to make a new batch. To make quick work of it I picked up a old food processor for $5 at the thrift store to grate the soap. A batch lasts me over a year. I use mine dry. But I have soft water.-Sue from MI

Hi Miss Lori. I am in Polk County Fl in between Tampa and Orlando. We got hit really hard here. I really appreciate the work that your son is doing here. My power just came on this morning. I have some damage, but my home is livable. Many of my neighbors lost their roofs. Many in my area are still without power. I am hoping against hope that schools open Monday so I can get back to work I am a substitute teacher, so anytime schools are closed I can't work. Really hoping they are open on Monday. Had to throw out most of my refrigerated food. My big freezer was ok. Thank goodness I have been pressure canning most of my meat. Still had to throw away a lot, but not as much as some people had to. I can tell you that I don't think I have ever been so terrified as I was during the storm. It is not something I wish to go through again. But thankfully, I am mostly ok.

I remember seeing some of the old ways as a child with relatives and friends in “the country” where there was no running water- just a hand pump in the house, a wash tub for the kids feet before bed, a “white owl” at night to keep from having to go to the out house, a wood stove in the kitchen, a churn on milking days when butter was needed, and a broom handle by the garden to lift up the pea vines to check for rattlers before we kids picked the peas. Lol. These reminders you present fill in the blanks from my childhood memories that may well come in handy more than we think. Your calm genuine demeanor makes the learning easy paced and effective for learning cooking at my level of needing some basics. You both, in my book, represent what to be an American is all about. It is a spirit, an authenticity, honest and self reliant goodness that is America. To me, America does not exist in governments fraught with corruption, hidden agendas and encroachments on the constitution and founding documents fundamental to freedom. OxyClean saves any detergent, but keep it as a separate step, the dry powder lasts nearly forever, but once it is dissolved in water the oxy effect starts to deteriorate, sort of used up before it reaches the laundry. Your liquid detergents looks very nice :- )

Mrs Lori, I loved this video. I remember as a very little girl wondering why my Aunts and Grandma were cooking clothes in the back yard? I so appreciate your approach to life, And consider you a very wise and wonderful woman. I think you and Mr Brown have the most beautiful place around. Normally, I don't go berserk with commenting on videos but I thought sharing my experience might be a good idea. Walmart doesn't carry Fels-Napha in their stores here and the price for ordering 1 bar was $16.97 plus shipping today. I drove to the Ace Hardware store that was supposed to have it in stock and they've been out since April. I finally broke down and ordered from Amazon: 4 bars for $27.63. The only reason I bought these is, even with the outrageous prices, spread out over 4 years, I will still be saving so much money that it's worth it. I hope your other subscribers who are wanting to try this are having better luck than I did! Thank you so much for everything you share, Miss Lori -- and we LOVE the Lunch Lady Peanut Butter Cookies around here!! They remind me of my own school days and I'm 70 years old! lol

That little smile on Pa's face made my day. I wrote this recipoe down as soon as video was over, I will be making this tomorrow, Being retired on a fixed income you take all the short cuts you find. I have been putting the vinegar in my wash now and let me tell you it works! my towels are softer and the smell last so much longer now I can pick up a clean towel a week later and still has the aroma of just being taken out the washer, I do have a washer but not a dryer. I love hanging my clothes out they always seem to smell so much better plus running a dryer can get expensive I don't miss having one at all. Miss Lori,My daughter was in Naples without power and of course no hot water for showers etc. They were so lucky that the hurricane eye didnt hit her area. It moved north and landed The eye touched down in Fort Myers They are in need of so much help there. My heart goes out to them. Kentucky is my home and our state sent about 12 trucks of linemen to help get power back on. Its going to take a long time to build homes back. So much beauty destroyed so fast. I believe that Lehman's catalog has a small portable pump-type (plunger-type) clothes washer that might be good to have if the power is out or if you are off-grid. You're right about the effects of citrus scents! I use a natural orange scented air freshener and it truly lifts my spirits and switches my brain to smiles. Lavender is my next favorite. I use that for organic soap because the commercial brands and body fragrances cause allergic reactions.

@@UniquelyGeeky I don't use the essential oils. The Felz Naptha has enough scent on its own that I don't feel like it needs any essential oil. I make the liquid version using Felz Naptha, laundry booster and borax only.

Oh yes, I have looked at the beautiful handstitched picture..it's beautiful! Miss Lori, yes thank you for the prayers, They are very appreciated! I just moved back from Leesburg fl, my daughter and family live in Lakeland...unfortunately a tree fell through their home. Fema is going to help them as well a group of wonderful people will be getting the tree out and off the house. God Bless them all! Fema is also putting them up in a hotel while the do remove the tree and fix the roof. There are a lot of good kind selfless people out there I tell ya 🤗 Take good care now, and thank you so much for this recipe! God is good!

I've been making my laundry detergent for years and got lazy, started getting the store bought and seen this video the other day. So, thanks to you I made a 5 gallon bucket and for the life of me can't recall why I thought the store bought was more convenient. This will last me and my husband a long long time, it smells great and much cheaper than the store brands and works just as good without the chemicals. Thanks for reminding me how easy and thrifty it is to make your own.

The people of Pine Island and Matlacha FL are really suffering. Everybody in that region is, but those two islands really hold a special place in our hearts because we've vacationed there on and off, but now many folks there are basically dealing with a prolonged evacuation and displacement situation. There's only one road there from the mainland and it's gone. The historic businesses along the main road are no longer there in Matlacha and most of the homes are damaged in some way or even destroyed. It was a wonderful retreat, with folks opening up their homes to air b+b, etc. Lots of retirees. That community could use prayer, for sure.

I watched your video on washing laundry off grid. I am now doing that. I bought the same washing sink. Love the results. My washer is newer but does a terrible job of cleaning. Thank you for sharing. I have followed you for a while now and get a lot of great ideas from you and Mr Brown. I like the smell of the zote soap. As a side note oxi clean works for cleaning the toilet also. Especially if you have stains.

Oh Mrs. Lori... I made this wonderful smelling laundry detergent. It cleaned my laundry like nothing else has. Sadly, the smell sent my cat into Anaphylactic and he almost died. So, I disposed of the detergent.

Do you think it would need a little more soap to help with the odor, or an additive like the Arm and Hammer booster? Love to hear the words "cotton baby diapers!" I used to rinse the diapers out as best I could them put them in a bucket that had water and borax in it. The diapers soaked until I had a full load. I dumped the bucket in the washer and sent them through the rinse cycle before washing. The diapers always came out fresh and clean, stain free and bright white. Oh, I used about 1/3 cup borax to a 5 gallon bucket.
