In this video we have a look at Mrs.O's 2009 Honda Odyssey that has had the Air Bag light on for a little bit and a code 45-11. This indicates a problem with the side impact sensor #2. A quick test reveals that the wires are shorted together. The question is... where? -Enjoy!

She's done several things on the channel as of this day. She's replaced rear wiper motor among other things. She probably knows more about repairing her own car than most people watching this channel just by being around it and working /with/ her husband. People forget she seems to be the one taking in cars, taking customer complaints, and having to write meticulously a lot of details about repairs and such so her husband knows what's going on. She definitely knows what questions to ask at that point.

Tech Tip for you Eric: "solubility of sucrose in ethanol at room temperature is so small that it can be ignored for practical purposes" = if you use alcohol based contact cleaner to clean sugar based lemonade from the connector, it does not do much. Use water. Sugars are highly soluble to water. When water has done it's task. THEN use alcohol, which is highly soluble to water. When you spray it with alcohol, it will take away the remaining water and connector dries up in seconds.

I can confirm this. At work our resident micro electronics guy used to wash circuit boards in the sink sometimes. Then clean them with isopropyl alcohol. Much to my surprise it often did the job. We didn't have access to an ultra sonic cleaner back then.

Or, water rinse followed by compressed air blow gun drying. Since you’re going in with water, use CRC 14416 HydroForce. Makes water wet the surface like it was old-school electronics wash.

Reminds me of our gran daughter when she was smaller and rode in "The Princess van"....{SHE calls it that}...after she rode in it there were LOTS of "unknown" things on the floor and her seat......cheese stick wrappers, gum, little fishes, cracker crumbs, soda or/and juice stains..............etc. Your family is adorable!! If they were to quit due to you ass-hats calling up to ask how to change a spark plug then you will no longer need to even ask that question as a large group of irate fans will track you down and toss your car into the nearest lake. Good process! How about we do some prevention by putting some grease and/or duct tape over the connector top? Also note of the goop was water-based, electrical cleaner is not the best choice. Use some plain water to dissolve that crud.

I agree with the others who said that brake cleaner would have cleaned it quicker and I was surprised you didn't try it first. LOL Soapy water is the best for cleaning sugary residue. The operators of the material handlers where I worked often spilled soda or coffee that would get into electrical connections or on circuit boards. After having to replace one board that cost $2,500 because of spilled coffee, the company banned any liquids inside of the cabs.

My wife is the same way. It’s one of the things about being a Tech. We tend to fix EVERYTHING ourselves and therefore our wives expect us to be able to fix everything. Toss some stabilant 22 on those terminals too.

After all that and the strong likelihood of it happening again, I would recommend wrapping good electrical tape around the entire top & bottom wiring harness & electrical connectors to form a "shield" when more liquids make their way down that path again. You could also just fill the entire top of the electrical connector where the wires enter into it from the top connector, with dielectric grease too -- would reduce the chances of any liquids working their way down the connector again too.

or use good old silicone sealant to seal it up, I've done that on many door harness after cleaning and repairing. Hyundai was real bad at that, enough that I started silicone sealing them ahead of time, I did put dielectric silicone in the connector too, belt and suspenders :)

I used to use the tubes of silicone sealant too on these types of issues, until the vehicles that I had used that method on started coming back a few years later for other issues & I had to dig all that old silicone sealant out before I could even start working on the new issues. That is when I went to the electrical tape method and if the connector body is a small enough then will just slip a piece of large heat shrink tubing over the entire harness & connector, and create a shield that way. With either the electrical tape or the heat shrink tubing, I spend less than a minute getting it back to the factory wiring connections, rather than spending 10's of minutes picking all the silicone out of the back of the multi-cavity connectors.

Personally, I just walk away. I don't trust myself to work on anything mechanical on my car, so I trust the professional, just like other people trust me to fix their electronic stuff. Which is not to say I couldn't do it in a pinch, but I don't have the reassurance which comes with experience to do it with confidence. I'd still get a mechanic to double check my work once out of the pinch. Let's not forget this is a highly skilled trade and getting something wrong can get one killed.
