At 3:23 I say Ikko Ikki Loan Sword Ashigaru are stronger than Katana Samurai 1v1. That was a typo in the script and I was supposed to say Yari Samurai as that's what I showed on screen and mentioned earlier. Although 2 of them are still only 2/3 of the price and together they will mess up a Katana Samurai real good, so not quite 1v1, but close enough.

Although common sense to Shogun 2 TW players, it should also be mentioned to newer players that the ashigaru units are also faster to recruit and replenish, which further cements their place in the top 5. But now that Loan Sword Ashigaru are in the top 5 (where they definitely belong) we really need to talk more about Mori Wako Raiders. Criminally underappreciated unit, these are essentially tier 2 versions of Loan Swords, with higher infrastructure requirements (but not tech, you only need bushido to unlock sword dojo tech-wise) and the addition of Kisho Training. They are almost equivalent to Katana Samurai having a bit less armor and charge in exchange for higher melee defense (in straight melee the +3 melee defense actually outclasses the -2 armor), but are far cheaper to recruit and maintain and have kisho training to boot. They aren't gimped by being an undersized unit either, they're a full samurai sized unit with equal morale and melee attack. Now I know the military port requirement is frustrating given that the nearest blacksmith to the Mori lacks a port slot. In response, so what? They are so much cheaper than katana samurai that there really is no excuse not to recruit them direct from Aki (or a neighboring territory with naval bonuses if you prefer to build your ports there). Slap down an armory encampment upgrade (or a proving ground if you want to go for a balls to the wall kisho deployed melee rush strat, they may be glass cannon but with + charge they are superior to unupgraded katana sam) and you have the dominant mid-tier unit of the game. Eventually a Mori player will probably take Satsuma, so if you really want proper upgrades you can always get them there. For blacksmith upgrades Mori Wako raiders count as ashigaru units, so you will need to upgrade the smiths at least once to benefit. On top of all this, kisho training itself is underappreciated. There are a lot of nasty tricks you can do with an army that can mass vanguard deploy. If you see an enemy full stack sitting just outside a castle you can attack the castle directly, then deploy your forces around the castle cutting off their stack as they desperately try to run through their own moat and your lines to get back inside the castle. Kisho trained units are also better at hiding, both in the open and in forests where units have to get much closer to reveal them compared to regular units. Anyhow I'd still put them outside top 5 since early game is still more important than mid game, but this unit really needs to get talked about more. It's honestly a shame that Hattori doesn't get one of these, they are so much better than any of Hattori's kisho trained units especially due to the cost.

Siege weapons are really fun, and make sieges much easier. But on a open field I find they very rarely pay for themselves. They are just too inaccurate. The exception being fire rockets. Though tercios are my favourite unit in the game and I do love going tercios plus European cannons.

I didn't use Yari Ashigaru at all during my first few Shogun 2 campaigns because the tutorial did a horrible job explaining Yari Wall. The tutorial said that Yari Wall was only useful for head on cavalry charges, which I took to meant that that was the only time it should be used.

The tutorial in shogun 2 does a disservice to new players. They also explain that fire mangonels are great in sieges (not true they are inaccurate as all hell and it will take forever for them to land 1 shot)

I like how the best units in Shogun 2 kind of follow a pattern of historical accuracy. The backbone of the best Sengoku infantry was made up of ashigaru with pokey sticks and the backbone of the supporting cavalry was made up of samurai shock cavalry with pokey sticks.

I’ve done Long Yari Ash only challenges on legendary and it’s tough to started but as soon as you pump out 5 it’s GG! When you have full armies of them you fight full samurai armies, slap them all in yariwall and take like 100 losses and complete crush theirs. Def OP!! Takes a couple attempts/restarts to keep peace and not get attacked. Maybe the next Donk Challenge!?

One challenge I put on myself is the do a No Yari Wall Challenge. I can still use yari ashigaru, but they cannot go into the unstoppable wall formation. My unit to take over their role is the naginata samurai, they hold a line shockingly well with their armour and would be a far more popular unit if the yari wall did not have so much power. Yari wall is so overpowered that it feels like cheating.

This makes me so glad I started playing with mods. I put in about 1800 hours of vanilla + DLC. Spamming yari ashi because they are pound for pound the best unit in the game by like a factor of 3. When you increase ammunition and dramatically decrease upkeeps it opens up so many more units and tactics to actually be viable lol

This is a good list for field battles. However, few (if any) of these units perform well in siege assaults. In contrast, Bow Monks sometimes even makes siege assaults preferable.

Yari Ashigaru is the most effective general purpose unit especially the Oda long Yari version as its Yari wall is near impenetrable especially if you combine multiple units in an attack. I’m pretty sure I used only Yari Ashigaru when playing Oda and demolished quite a number of factions including the takeda and Tokugawa factions.

I agree with the list, however you could make the list to fit more different units. For unit being ranked higher because it's straight upgrade from one, you could make it like #2 and #2+. For example, if light cav is ranked as #2, yari cav being straight upgrade can be ranked as #2+ and would leave an extra place for a much different units. That's just my 2 cents, great video nonetheless!

Phalanx is the best unit kind ever. Funny how even in Shogun 2, the best units are the ones which most closely resemble the phalanx. Phalanx supremacy is eternal.

Depends a little on context. Historically, if you don't have cavalry or ranged superiority (especially if your pikemen don't have full plate armor like most wouldn't) then a phalanx or pike wall is inflexible, stiff, and easier to flank and skirmish. Alexanders' army famously relied upon the companion cavalry to acheive local superiority in weak spots while the phalanx held the enemy in place. The Roman's took advantage of this especially when fighting phalanxes in a part of the world where cavalry was relatively speaking less prevalent on the battlefield by using more mobile units that all used short throwable spears, large shields and short swords. essentially their tactics were to surround a flank of the enemy's tightly packed line, disrupt the formation with throwing spears, press into close quarters (a brutal business that obviously cost lives) and there use the superior close quarters mobility of their short swords to their advantage to make a hole in the formation. This approach took exceptionally well disciplined and brave soldiers to be sure. Typically it was easier to get people to fight a phalanx from a phalanx but then if the enemy has more men with longer pikes that's not really going to work out well for you. You need some local superiority using some other tactic.

l literally had a bow warrior monk kill 800+ enemies in a battle recently they are just unfair at how strong they are, specially cuz the AI is speshal and you basically never see monk tier units being used by them it's usually katana sam, bow sam and yarim sam spam.

@@tntaclegrape No idea. i recall him saying that too, i guess the idea is when you put them in yari wall, since they group tightly together you put the normal yari up front (which have shorter spears) and the long yari in the back so the spears over lap. Plus in theory the normal yari will take all the arrow fire in that formation.

Long yari have a unit cap in campaign mode. You can only have ... I want to say 8 of them in total. So generally speaking you'll want to put 2 in each major stack and spread them out on the battle field to where they're needed most. Additionally stacking pikes isn't as beneficial as it seems. Since very few units can get past the first set of pikes the second pike unit will see little action. But stacking pikes with spears the pikes will get in on the action more and will be protected from melee attacks and some missile fire as the spears absorb most damage. *edit* quick glance at the wiki page seems to show they don't have a unit cap anymore. I'm not sure if that's just in multiplayer/custom battles (where they never were capped) or if they changed it at some point. Either way the second point is still valid.

Here I am, after 1 year hahaha, went back to shogun 2 and I'm watching a lot of your videos. But the only thing I desagree is the second place, I would not but Yari ashigaru as second because I had some bad experiences with it in campaing, but haven't tested the same situation with other units. But the oda long, yes this is good, I've tested in the custom battle and they can defeat Katana Heroes in the 1v1, amazing unit

beating legendary campaign with Oda involves ashigarus almost entire troops. The army composition is a bit messed compared to my campaign with other clans, blending regular yaris and the long one. One thing though, after a hard-fought decisive battle the Oda long yari ashigarus lost only few men. Yarimazing..

What I have already done: Sword only (Date) Bow only (Chosokabe) Yari only (Oda) Gunpowder only (Otomo) Siege only (Hojo) Stealth only (Hattori) Monk Only (Ikko Ikki) Ashigaru only (Oda) Cavalry only (Takeda) Anyone have any ideas for what to do to 🌶 things up? Any suggestions for challenges to do with Clans I haven't done?

In a certain way they are, the transition for mid to late game is basically change your Yari Ashigaru into Naginata Samurai, but the former is considered the best cost efficient unit in the game, so most people keep them until de end of the campaign, the latter is toughter generalist unit but both hold the line very well. I prefer Naginata Samurai for my campaigns.

Yeah, FotS is it’s own game altogether as you don’t compare those units except in multiplayer, which isn’t the purpose of these lists. I did make top 5 FotS units lists as well, and revolver cav are high up on those.

Yes I think you were actually the KZbinr who revealed the true power of the Revolver cav to me. I took one look at the stats like you said and thought they were trash without realizing their bad reload didn't matter due to the 6 continuous volleys. I'd probably go full armour for Long Yaris, because they're a pretty stationary unit, and go for a mix of melee attack and armour for Loan Swords because they need some protection from arrows, but mostly you just want them to deal more damage in melee which is what they're good at.

I think you have wrong. Yes, Yari ashigaru is a yarimazing unit, BUT if the enemy has more bow units, , you can put your yariwall anywhere you want, you will lose the battle. In my experieces bow ashigaru, katana samurai and yari cav are the best. In siegebattles yari ashigaru is definetly unuseful. If you attack they are too weak, if you defend they are perfect target for a bow unit, mainly in yariwall.

Now I am curious. Do you think Loan Sword Ashigaru are better than Yari Ashigaru? Your tierlist suggests the opposite is true, since you say you don't take into acknowledgement clan exclusivity when rating these units. Does that mean you don't really use Loan Sword Ashigaru, as they are a worse unit? Or do you use them only specifically when you need anti-missile troops, and you don't have anything else that is better than Yari Ashigaru at filling that role?

I do not doubt that Yari Ashigaru aren't bad, but I use them almost exclusively in the early game, but leave them for samurai very quick, once my economy is strong. I'd take Katana Samurai over them, even against cavalry, as for some reason, Katana Samurai beat every cavalry, except for Yari Cav and Takeda Fire Cavalry in my campaigns.

I do too, and I'm sure most people do, because I don't want to use the same unit the entire campaign and most Samurai units are very strong in their own right, but that doesn't take away from the fact that Yari Ashigaru are absolutely the most cost-effective unit in the game, far outshining anything else, including Katana Samurai. Again though, once you have basically infinite money you might as well just have 5-6 late-game stacks running around than 8-9 Ashigaru armies, especially if you run out of generals, so I also usually switch to better units when money is no longer an issue.

Also, I've noticed that although Katana Samurai beat most cav in my campaigns, Naginata Samurai get shredded by arrow fire, even tho they have such high armour. I think it's an error of some sorts, but it kinda kills the idea of me recruiting them. Even Yari Ashigaru in Yari Wall bloodied them to almost routing. You know why?

@@Wolfram_von_Richthofen everyone gets shredded by arrows if you think is a good idea to tank arrows all day, especially in Legendary. Just try upgraded Naginata Samurai with 14 armor in a loose formation (making this unit to lose fewer men for each volley) while focused the enemy archers with your own archers (bow monks are the best for this, if you don't believe me check the NagSam - BowMonk combo). Obviously, Katana Samurai are better against infantry than Naginata Samurai, but both suffer against Yari Ashigaru in Yari Wall (that ability makes Yari Ashigaru has the defensive power of a Naginata Samurai basically), and in the opposite way, Naginata Samurai finish off cavalry very quickly (almost as fast than a yari infantry). According to my personal experience, if you play defensive and static, Naginata Samurai is the best choice for mainline; for an agressive style, Katana Samurai are the best but you need protect your flanks with Naginata Samurai for sure; Yari Ashigaru are excellent for early game, and valid choice even for mid to late due to low price and upkeep. I'm one of those who prefers to be a defensive style player and the AI is very predictable in most situations, but the Bow Samurai doomstack is very deadly in Legendary, so Naginata Samurai becomes a necessity for mid to late game.

I think yari ashigaru are overrated. Sure, in the early game they are indispensable; but, by the late game, their only strategic role is to save money. The AI tends to field dedicated samurai armies that can easily vanquish ashigaru (unless they are Oda ashigaru).

Even though I did a custom battle with 10 units of Yari Ashigaru in yari wall defending against 5 units of Yari Samurai and when they clashed the enemy tore right through my Ashigaru like they were made of paper. What the hell am I doing wrong?!

Don't attack them. Let them come to you. Also, upgrade your units' attack/weapons

@@MrSmartDonkeyLP though to be fair, those long yaris are borderline broken, they're that good. In multiplayer there's some easy counters (ie shoot them) but in single player you just kill every ranged unit with cav and then watch everything else banzai your line and die lmao
