I’ve been Celtics fan since the late 1970s. Yeah, I’m old. Bird completely revitalized the team. What he did for the Celtics is what Jordan did for the Bulls or Kobe did for the Lakers. For everything Bird lacked in physical ability, he more than made up for in skill and mental toughness.

People forget that BIRD had the basketball I.Q. of a genius. He knew where to be at the right time and he knew what his teammates strengths were, putting them in a position to succeed bringing out the things that they did best and giving them the confidence to play with him. Some things you just can't teach and it seemed like Bird had a answer for every possible situation. He wasn't fast but he would beat you to the ball. He couldn't jump but he would out rebound you. He mastered the basics like boxing out, running the floor, passing the ball with eyes behind his head and had one of the best jump shots in basketball. When he stepped up to the free throw line, it was automatic. He rarely missed. His career free throw percentage has to be around 90 something. Bird and Magic saved the NBA. Their rivalry was great for basketball. Two legends that played the game with everything they had.

You look at the team that Magic walked into versus Bird, it's clear that Magic and the Lakers always had the upper hand in talent. However Bird alone made up that difference. I always thought what if Boston couldn't sign Bird before the 1979 draft. Lakers would have to picked between Bird and Magic. I think they would taken Bird. And he would have a team loaded with talent, might have won at least 7 rings in a row. And Magic well would be stuck with the lowly Bulls and not amount to much there. In order for Magic to beat Bird, he needs the upper hand in talent like Michigan State vs Indiana State.

It's disappointing that a guy doing a fan piece on Bird would be out to lunch on something so basic as to why Bird was drafted in the 6th round. Bird was drafted in the 6th round when he was a junior in college. Red Auerbach was asked why they would waste a pick on a player they wouldn't have for a year by none other than Billy Cunningham a former all pro and GM of the Sixers. Auerbach laughed at him and said, "Do you know how short a period of time a year is?" It was a brilliant move and unprecedented.
@bonnieplasha46847 ай бұрын
Red made a lot of brilliant moves. If you delve into Celtic history, you can see that he had vision. He was a bit of a chess player like Bird. Not many would have traded Rick Robey for Dennis Johnson, but it was the perfect move for the Celtics.

Bird was drafted as a junior eligible and was the 6th pick because no GM wanted to take the risk of Bird finishing his college career and not signing = Bird would go back into the draft. Only Red Auerbach was smart enough to take that risk. Before the back injury and dual heel surgeries, Bird as a rookie won ROY over Magic and was 4th in the MVP. For the next 8 seasons in the MVP Bird was 2,2,2,1,1,1,3, and 2nd again. Magic for the MVP in the same 9 year seasons was not on the list, 11,8, 3,3,2,3,1, and 3rd again. Bird was higher in 8 of these same 9 seasons!! Thanks.

And he racked up 30 some points. Bird would play hurt. I know pros have to play hurt. That is part of the deal. Larry had broken bones in his head, near his eye. But he came back. Another one is when he shot a three point contest with his warm up jacket on. He told the other players I'm going to win this. I just was wondering which one of you will be second. Larry was amazing. I hated him because I liked the Lakers. But in hindsight, he was better than Magic as a basketball player, though Magic was the better entertainer. They were close in terms of skill and intensity of play with Larry coming out ahead in my estimation. Of course, MJ was in a class by himself. But these 2 are in the top 10 players ever for sure. My top 10. MJ. By himself. Player 0 on planet Neptune. On Earth: 1. Larry Bird 2. Kobe Bryant. 3. Hakeem Olajuwan 4. Magic Johnson 5. Wilt Chamberlain 6. Kareem Abdul Jabbar 7. Bill Russell 8. Oscar Schmidt 9. LeBron James 10. Stephen Curry. List will change over time.

Take the top players from the 1980s and ask them in a 7-game final, who would you want Bird or Lebron, and then ask who would you not want to see in those 7 games Bird or Lebron

Bird was the 6th pick because he planned on playing another year of college hoops. The Celtics had to wait a full year before he joined them.

Bird’s passing was the greatest of all time, his 3 points were greatest of all time, his keystone cops behind the back Harlem Globetrotters passing was crazy funny, My opinion Jordan is the greatest but Bird was the funniest to watch., and wasn’t that what a sport like basketball is for ? Fun to watch ! And watch and watch

His draft position as presented in this video is misleading. He was drafted by the Celtics 6th in 1978 because he was draft eligible even though he was going to play another year. The Celtics took a chance they could sign him before the draft came around the next year. He would have either have been picked first (most likely) or second to Magic Johnson in 1979.

4:57 one of my favorite lines in sports history is when Magic here told Bird not to get to close to Michael cause it’s a foul.

Larry Bird’s Basketball IQ still has not been matched, yes, could not really jump, but when you have a court vision that appears to see right through everyone on the courts, a shooting technique that made you able to score anywhere on the court, not to mention a Champion’s Mentality that makes you dominate the game the moment to step onto the court… that makes you the GOAT among GOATS

Props for giving Schmidt a shout. A guy who gave up the chance to play in the NBA just so he could represent his country in the Olympics is a legend. Bird the best trash talker ever.

To tell the truth. I'm not a basketball fan. However, I'm a Larry Bird fan. Just by listening to the stories others tell about him. I've never watched a single game he played in.
