Always loved that quote from Pat! Bird and Jordan will always be my #1 and #2 there are many greats, older greats and younger like Kobe who should always be mentioned. LBJ I don't even put in the convo simply because I've witnessed him quit more than once on his teammates that's something Bird and MJ never did.

I’ve been Celtics fan since the late 1970s. Yeah, I’m old. Bird completely revitalized the team. What he did for the Celtics is what Jordan did for the Bulls or Kobe did for the Lakers. For everything Bird lacked in physical ability, he more than made up for in skill and mental toughness.

People forget that BIRD had the basketball I.Q. of a genius. He knew where to be at the right time and he knew what his teammates strengths were, putting them in a position to succeed bringing out the things that they did best and giving them the confidence to play with him. Some things you just can't teach and it seemed like Bird had a answer for every possible situation. He wasn't fast but he would beat you to the ball. He couldn't jump but he would out rebound you. He mastered the basics like boxing out, running the floor, passing the ball with eyes behind his head and had one of the best jump shots in basketball. When he stepped up to the free throw line, it was automatic. He rarely missed. His career free throw percentage has to be around 90 something. Bird and Magic saved the NBA. Their rivalry was great for basketball. Two legends that played the game with everything they had.

I agree with you 💯 percent. The best 3 players I ever saw were, Jordan, Magic and Bird. No other players are or were as consistent, clutch, intelligent and reliable. People say that LeBron is the goat. I can't believe that they can actually put him over Jordan. In the playoffs and Finals, those 3 guys played their best basketball. They made their teammates better and made shot after shot that would eventually decide the outcome of the game. Their basketball I.Q. was off the charts. They knew what to do in pressure situations and I can't remember anyone who has performed better when it counted the most.

You look at the team that Magic walked into versus Bird, it's clear that Magic and the Lakers always had the upper hand in talent. However Bird alone made up that difference. I always thought what if Boston couldn't sign Bird before the 1979 draft. Lakers would have to picked between Bird and Magic. I think they would taken Bird. And he would have a team loaded with talent, might have won at least 7 rings in a row. And Magic well would be stuck with the lowly Bulls and not amount to much there. In order for Magic to beat Bird, he needs the upper hand in talent like Michigan State vs Indiana State.

He has a higher rpg than most all time great centers including Patrick Ewing. He won 3 mvp in a row, he averaged a double double plus 6 or 7 assists for his career, he's a 12 time all star, 3 time champion, 2 time finals MVP, rookie of the year by a landslide, 3 back to back to back 3 point contest winner and he made all of his teammates much better. He's the #1 player of all time that you'd want to build your team around and he has the second highest winning % (it's called something else I forget off the top) of all time, magic is #1 and is only ahead by a fraction of a percent

In the 9 years before his back/foot injuries... Bird had 3 rings (5 finals), 3 MVPs, 2 Finals MVPs, averaged 25/10/6. Had the first 2 40/50/90 seasons ever and was fractions away from 2 more before those. His team won 60+ games 6 times, never winning less than 56 and once going 67-15, 4th best ever at the time before expansion. He is still the fastest to reach 10k points, 5k rebounds and 3k assists. Bird averaged the same points, assists and steals per game as Stephen Curry while also having the same rebounds per game as Karl Malone.

It's disappointing that a guy doing a fan piece on Bird would be out to lunch on something so basic as to why Bird was drafted in the 6th round. Bird was drafted in the 6th round when he was a junior in college. Red Auerbach was asked why they would waste a pick on a player they wouldn't have for a year by none other than Billy Cunningham a former all pro and GM of the Sixers. Auerbach laughed at him and said, "Do you know how short a period of time a year is?" It was a brilliant move and unprecedented.

Red made a lot of brilliant moves. If you delve into Celtic history, you can see that he had vision. He was a bit of a chess player like Bird. Not many would have traded Rick Robey for Dennis Johnson, but it was the perfect move for the Celtics.

Bird was drafted as a junior eligible and was the 6th pick because no GM wanted to take the risk of Bird finishing his college career and not signing = Bird would go back into the draft. Only Red Auerbach was smart enough to take that risk. Before the back injury and dual heel surgeries, Bird as a rookie won ROY over Magic and was 4th in the MVP. For the next 8 seasons in the MVP Bird was 2,2,2,1,1,1,3, and 2nd again. Magic for the MVP in the same 9 year seasons was not on the list, 11,8, 3,3,2,3,1, and 3rd again. Bird was higher in 8 of these same 9 seasons!! Thanks.

Larry Bird was the most COMPLETE basketball player I've ever witnessed in all of my 60 years on this planet! He's not the best at anything so to speak, but he's in the top 3-5 in any area you put up!! Shooting, passing, team leader, triple doubles -you name it! He made the players around him on either side of the game BETTER when they were playing with or against him! He beat MJ and all of the long list of NBA greats/ HOF'rs from arguably the greatest decade of the NBA - the 80's ! He was a great coach and GM after his storied career! If it has anything to do with basketball, Larry is good at it! One of my favorite Larry Bird stories came from Bill Walton. Bill said Larry was bored during one series of games. And said I'm going to play the next game left handed. And he racked up 30 some points. Bird would play hurt. I know pros have to play hurt. That is part of the deal. Larry had broken bones in his head, near his eye. But he came back. Another one is when he shot a three point contest with his warm up jacket on. He told the other players I'm going to win this. I just was wondering which one of you will be second. Keep in mind, he said this to some of the best players ever to step out on to the hardwood!!!

WHY would you show the stupid clip for Isiah Thomas saying Byrd was a 'non-factor' in the 80s? He won championships in 1981, 1984, and 1986!!! .. Isiah Thomas will forever be bitter that he was NEVER chosen to be on the NBA 'Dream Team' for the Olympics ... and I'm GLAD he wasn't chosen!

12:00 if Isiah isn't hating on Michael, then he's probably not breathing. "Michael" didn't beat those stacked teams, that is correct. He WAS the Bulls in the late 80s, Scottie and Horace were puppies. Those teams were vastly deeper, their 3rd best players were well superior of the Bulls 2nd best. When Michael got surrounded by a good team they became fair fights.

Bird is why I started watching basketball as a young person. He is a true HOF player and I appreciate what he did for the Celtics since I’m a local fan. But Jordan is the true goat of the NBA. Nobody before him and nobody after him impacted the game as much as Micheal did. Love you Larry but Mike got you.

Jordan definately one of the best to ever play the game. With that said, if Len Bias had joined Bird in Boston and Bird never hurt his back, Jordan would not have achieved half of what he achieved. Neither would the Lakers.

The great thing to me about Larry Bird was his rejecting Bobby Knight's Indiana Hoosiers after tasting how it was going to be for a few weeks. Great survival instincts. Not afraid to do what was right for himself even though it was a childhood dream of his.

As a Philadelphia 76ers fan who saw Bird play in his prime as a kid at the Spectrum (RIP), I truly HATED that man & the Celtics. We got 1 NBA Championship in 1983 and should've had more, but we had Bird and the Celtics to contend with. But I knew the man could ball.

Larry was one of the best to lace em up, His passing was the best i ever saw=passed with volleyball style. talked the trash and backed every bit of it up. Larry was the highest bball IQ that i have seen. Larry imo was the best player to play. Larry Bird is ranked 14th all-time in Defensive Rebounds per game with 8.0 DRPG meaning that he was better than Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Nikola Jokic, Hakeem Olajuwon, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Charles Barkley, Karl Malone, David Robinson, Patrick Ewing, Shaquille O’Neal, Dikembe Mutumbo, Moses Malone, Kevin Durant, Robert Parish, and Kevin McHale. Larry was the freakn best. and then here is his career stats. Bird scored 24.3 points per game in his career on a .496 field goal percentage, an .886 free throw percentage, and a .376 percentage on three-point shots. Bird had an average of 10.0 rebounds per game for his career and 6.3 assists.

Larry was amazing. I hated him because I liked the Lakers. But in hindsight, he was better than Magic as a basketball player, though Magic was the better entertainer. They were close in terms of skill and intensity of play with Larry coming out ahead in my estimation. Of course, MJ was in a class by himself. But these 2 are in the top 10 players ever for sure. My top 10. MJ. By himself. Player 0 on planet Neptune. On Earth: 1. Larry Bird 2. Kobe Bryant. 3. Hakeem Olajuwan 4. Magic Johnson 5. Wilt Chamberlain 6. Kareem Abdul Jabbar 7. Bill Russell 8. Oscar Schmidt 9. LeBron James 10. Stephen Curry. List will change over time.

Bird’s passing was the greatest of all time, his 3 points were greatest of all time, his keystone cops behind the back Harlem Globetrotters passing was crazy funny, My opinion Jordan is the greatest but Bird was the funniest to watch., and wasn’t that what a sport like basketball is for ? Fun to watch ! And watch and watch

His draft position as presented in this video is misleading. He was drafted by the Celtics 6th in 1978 because he was draft eligible even though he was going to play another year. The Celtics took a chance they could sign him before the draft came around the next year. He would have either have been picked first (most likely) or second to Magic Johnson in 1979.

Larry Bird’s Basketball IQ still has not been matched, yes, could not really jump, but when you have a court vision that appears to see right through everyone on the courts, a shooting technique that made you able to score anywhere on the court, not to mention a Champion’s Mentality that makes you dominate the game the moment to step onto the court… that makes you the GOAT among GOATS
