I'm a 66-year-old sax/guitar/keys player and I never got into doing vocals until this year when I first heard Voiceplay and Pentatonix for the first time! I discovered I have a vocal range and lower register that I never even dreamed of! Being 5' 8" and 120# Having an ear for pitch helps but I wish I had explored this 40 years ago!

'That voice' is our very special Mitch Grassi, very rare mezzo soprano, chameleion extroridaire. If you're not sure who that "new" person is, it's just Mitch again looking very different again. But that voice is always, always unearthly and special.
@Phillylullaby7711 ай бұрын
Mitch is technically a countertenor . A countertenor (also contra tenor) is a type of classical MALE singing voice whose vocal range is equivalent to that of the female contralto or mezzo-soprano voice types. He shares a mezzo-soprano range, but a MALE with that range is not called a mezzo-soprano. WOMEN are called alto, mezzo-soprano, or soprano. They may sing in a tenor range or sing the tenor part , but WOMEN are not called tenors.

THAT IS WHY PTX IS THE NUMBER ONE ACAPELLA GROUP IN THE WORLD🌎 🎵🎙🎶
@Gwennedd11 ай бұрын
Great reaction! If you haven't heard much from this excellent group, you really should explore their stuff more. There some 200+ pieces they've done...some covers and some originals...and not a bad one in the lot. 1st singer: Scott Hoying, baritone. his vocal range is immense...like all the group's...and he takes over the bassline when the bass sings a verse or does lead. 2nd singer: Mitch Grassi, countertenor. Mitch has a really ethereal voice especially in his higher range. He and Kirstie can both sing high soprano. 3rd singer: Matt Sallee, lyric baritone. Matt's vocal range is phenomenal! His bass is constantly going lower and he's singing with the group more often, rather than simply doing the bassline. Avi Kaplan was the group's bass for years (2012-2017) and his voice is astounding. He's an opera trained basso profundo and could break speakers with his low range. Matt is getting there!! 4th singer: Kirstin ( Kirstie) Maldonado, alto-soprano. Kirstie is the belter in the group. Her vocals are bright and strong. It's often ( until you get really used to the group's voices) difficult to figure out who's doing the high-pitched notes, Kistie or Mitch....and occasionally... Kevin Olusola...beatboxer extraordinaire! Yes, Kevin can sing. In fact he often does help with backing vocals when he's not actively beatboxing. He's also a musical genius. He co- songwrites , plays sax, keyboard and cello. Speaks several languages including fluent Mandarin. Some PTX suggestion for new reactions: Daft Punk medley, Evolution of Michael Jackson, Hallelujah, 90's Dance Medley, Imagine, Mad World, Bohemian Rhapsody, Coffee In Bed (Original), Be My Eyes ( original), Run To You ( original).

As you discovered, Pentatonix habitually gets you to like their cover better than the original. PTX can take a song and make it new and fresh but still remain familiar. Pentaholics (PTX fans) call them upgrades rather than covers. You won't regret diving into this very deep and magical rabbit hole.

Oh you just found the first of the holy trinity of acapella groups. This is a train absolutely worth staying on for their vocal talents, harmonies, and exquisite arrangements. Pentatonix is the only one to win Grammys. The specialize in Christmas and iconic song covers. They have one of the top counter tenors in the world with Mitch but all of them could sing lead. Then there is Voiceplay, nicknamed the theater kids of acapella that specialize in Halloween, video game scores, and Disney/Broadway covers. Geoff Castellucci is arguably the top baso profundo in the world in that group, but all members can sing lead. Lastly there is Home Free. Their acapella specializes in country, folk, comedy, duwop old rock n roll, and R&B. They have a world class beat boxer and baso profundo, but steller lead singers.

Kudos to you for admitting you liked this better than the original. I'm a Marcelito Pomoy fan but Mitch Grassi, in my humble opinion, is much better. I recommend you react to "The Prayer" to see just how angelic and effortless Mitch's voice really is and how perfect a blend of voices can be had by Pentatonix. There are less than 10 known counter tenors in the world with a 7 octave voice range and Mitch is one of them. The Prayer by Pentatonix climaxes with a wall of sound made by vocal chords. The bass is Matt and boy can he sing. "You're a Mean One Mr. Grinch" shows his singing talent. Of course, everyone's #1 favorite Pentatonix song is Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" because that's normally everyone's first taste of Pentatonix. That video has over 700 million views on KZbin and was recorded while Avi Kaplan was the bass. Avi looks like Jesus in the video. Scott covers the bass when the bass singer has a solo. That is true in Hallelujah and Sound of Silence.

@@MrsRealisticthere are two different versions by Disturbed floating around on KZbin. One was live on a nighttime talk show. Many people prefer that one, either because of or in spite of the fact that he was sick at the time but still sounds great. But I prefer his official video because that video adds so much to the story the song tells. There’s also a cover of this from Geoff Castellucci, the bass singer from VoicePlay, which is definitely worth checking out. He uses instruments in his solo work, but all of the vocals are him.

OMG you need to go down the PTX rabbit hole! Their covers are always awesome (they released a cover of Seal's 'Kiss from a Rose' a couple of months ago). Bohemian Rhapsody, Hallelujah, Mad World, The Prayer, Daft Punk... the list is pretty extensive. Their original songs are good, too. The bass guy here is Matt, and the guy with the higher voice is Mitch. Interestingly, this is a medium register vocal from him. He's a counter tenor, which is pretty rare. Scott (the tall blonde guy), Kevin (the beat boxer) and Kirsty complete the line up. I saw them live last year in London, and they were brilliant ❤

Pentatonix History…..composed by Alan Freeman They won The Sing Off in 2011. They made a guest starring appearance on America′s Got Talent as non−competitors a couple of years after that. The founding members are:- Scott Hoying (tall blond guy, natural baritone but has an impressive five−to−six octave range, can go all the way up to high tenor and down to bass, sings the bass lines when the usual bass singer takes the lead); Kirstin "Kirstie" (Rhymes with "Thirsty") Maldonado (the only female member, natural mezzo soprano, but can go down to low alto and as high as upper soprano, also can sing in whistle notes that are off the scale); For a time in 2018 between the group’s tours, had the female lead on Broadway in the production of “Kinky Boots”. Mitch Grassi (a true contra−tenor, can hit high notes in his chest voice with ease and go WAY higher in his falsetto, also with ease); Avriel "Avi" Kaplan (dark beard and long hair), true basso profundo, trained as an opera singer, also can go up into the tenor range; and Kevin "KO" Olusola (beatboxer extraordinaire, also is a world−class cellist who plays cello on some of their songs, has a beautiful high tenor voice and gets occasional lead vocal solos as well, graduated pre−med from Yale and speaks several languages including Mandarin Chinese). Kirstie, Scott & Mitch grew up together in Arlington, Texas, and began performing together as children in local youth musical theater. They ended up in high school together and performed in the choir. While there, they formed an a cappella group called The Trio which had several performance videos go viral on KZbin, most notably a cover of Lady Gaga′s "Telephone". The three of them are best friends and consider themselves to be almost siblings. Scott & Kirstie (who were a class year ahead of Mitch) both graduated high school in 2010 and went their separate ways to different colleges, Scott at USC and Kirstie at Oklahoma. While at USC, Scott joined a USC−based a cappella group called the SoCal VoCals, where he met alumnus Ben Bram, who was now an arranger and vocal coach for the NBC TV show The Sing Off, an a cappella competition show. Ben convinced Scott to get The Trio to audition for the show. The three reunited (Mitch had to skip high school graduation ceremonies to go) in Los Angeles for the audition. They found out that the rules had changed, so they needed at least five members to audition. Ben put them together with Avi (a native of Visalia, California), who he knew from Avi′s performing days at Mount San Antonio College in California. They found Kevin (from Kentucky) through one of his KZbin videos that had gone viral featuring him playing the cello and beatboxing at the same time, a talent that Kevin coined as "Cello−Boxing". Kevin arrived in Los Angeles literally the day before the audition! Scott came up with the name "Pentatonix" after the pentatonic scale. They performed a re−arrangement of "The Telephone" for the audition and passed, despite having been together as a five−piece group for less that 24 hours! They won The Sing Off that season (all of the performances are available on KZbin), in which they received a substantial cash prize AND a record contract with Epic Records. They pooled their prize winnings together and all moved to Los Angeles, and all got apartments right next door to each other in the same building. But just a week later, Epic dropped them because the marketing people didn′t think an acappella group could sell records. Instead of giving up, they were determined and began recording their own songs on KZbin, hiring Ben Bram as their producer and arranger. These usually consisted of the five of them sitting on a couch and performing cover songs live. Several of the videos went viral, and Sony (the parent company of Epic) decided to give them another chance by placing them on one of their smaller labels, Madison Gate. They released two secular EPs and one Christmas EP on Madison Gate, all of which were strong sellers. But when their cover of a medley of songs by Daft Punk not only went super−viral, but also won them their first Grammy, they were promoted all the way up to RCA Records, Sony′s top label. They began writing and producing their own songs in addition to their covers, began putting out a Christmas album just about annually (which has become their best−selling genre), and have had multi−platinum album sales, sold−out world tours, and have won two additional Grammys. Avi began getting burned out with all of the touring and heavy recording schedule, was suffering from anxiety and personal problems, and learned that his mother had been diagnosed with cancer in 2017. He announced he was departing from the group and taking some time away from the music industry. Matt Sallee (from Baltimore) joined them in September 2017. He did only become official when they renewed their RCA contract in February 2018, but he recorded with them in September as a featured artist and went on their Christmas tour as a featured artist, as well. When he attended the audition for the group, he had already mastered the Bass part for most if not all their past catalogue. He was successful and has proved that he fits in well with the group. If you think there have been other changes to the line up - look again. This is the ONLY change. Kirstie and Mitch are like chameleons and change looks frequently. After a year away from music, Avi has now returned as a phenomenal solo artist in the Folk/Americana/Roots genre. Ben Bram has been in charge of their production, including arranging and directing from the beginning. He is often referred to as the sixth member. Scott and Kevin are major players in the arrangements, but every member contributes. good watch is "The Recording of Evergreen" where a camera was invited into the studio for the second week of recording/ Also, all members are songwriters for both Pentatonix and their own solo work. Ed Boyer who mixes everything of theirs (even the HWB Livestream) is the one who pulled Ben Bram into the sing off in the first place. They were nominated for a 4th Grammy for their album Evergreen, but didn't win. They also got a star on Hollywood walk of fame. UPDATE: They’ve been nominated for a 5th grammy award. UPDATE: Pentatonix has done a cameo appearance in the new movie “Candy Cane Lane” starring Eddie Murphy. They are the carolers. Kirstie became a new mum which caused a pause in touring after their Evergreen Christmas tour 2021. Mid March 2023 Kirstie has announced that she is engaged to Ben Hausdorff, their videographer. No dates YET! They have a star on the Hollywood walk of fame installed in February 2023. They are the only acapella group with a star! Things you need to know because if you get these wrong “Pentaholics” will come after you with pitch forks and torches! Ha Ha!! 1- There is NO Auto-Tune; what you hear is actually what they sing. They really are that good. One exception is the 90's Dance Medley where Cher used auto-tune as an effect - so they had to. 2- What produces everything that you hear in the video, you see in the official video. If there is an instrument used in the music, you see it on screen. In the 2022 Christmas album, there are some instruments not featured throughout the album. 3- They never release something on video they can’t reproduce with the exact same quality live on-stage.

I just subbed. You liked Matt's low voice and Mitch's high voice. Thank you for reacting to Pentatonix aka PTX. I look forward to more PTX reactions.

OMG I'm a new fan now, the song is stunning itself, I grew up with Simon and Garfunkel, but your so right when you get a group like this (FANTASTIC GROUP I MIGHT ADD) and make it their own, WOW!!!!!!, I had tears in my eyes also, again you have a new fan here and God bless.

A quick warning, PTX's record company come down hard on reviewers who don't shade or make the image translucent to some degree. Don't worry about it though, we are here to join you in your reaction. If we want to see the original, we can go and watch it direct.

Thanks! I haven't had any issue with this one other than a copyright claim, which just means I can't monetize the video and doesn't affect my channel, thankfully! I have copyright claims with most videos I do. It's just the nature of the beast unfortunately 🤷♀️ I've had a few videos blocked before, but the company usually releases it within about 48 hours if we're lucky.

My absolute favorite's of Pentatonix are Amazing Grace and The Prayer, they are both just unreal. You should do a react video to both of those.

Fantastic song and the cover really does it justice. No unnecessary oversinging, every note and harmony just elevates it ❤

This group is Phenomenal. Can I just say that I absolutely adore whenever Kirsten starts singing, especially when she touches those higher notes. As the only female in the group, i think shes the best. For me, personally that is.

Yes, her voice is amazing! I WISH I could sing like that! And you have my favorite character from one of my favorite series as your avatar by the way 😅👍 My dad grew up in Wolverhampton, which is only about 9 miles from Birmingham where the show was filmed.

Pentatonix has done several albums of Christmas songs, so figuring out which one you heard before is quite a task. I'm just guessing, but I'd say it was probably Hallelujah, since it's their most watched video and an excellent introduction to them. It's not a Christmas song (not even a religious song at all), but because they put it on one of their Christmas albums...voila! Instant Christmas song! If you haven't heard it, you really should treat yourself and give it a listen! As far as recommendations go: to hear Mitch in his higher register, try The Prayer or Hallelujah. To hear Scott, try Sing or O Holy Night (the new version, released this Christmas). To hear Kirstin, try Say Something or My Favorite Things. To hear Kevin, try Amazing Grace or Imagine. To hear Kevin playing cello while beatboxing (cello-boxing), try Say Something or Shallow. To hear Matt - this is the one I'd normally recommend, but he also does a great job on Amazing Grace or Deck the Halls (done when he was still new to the group). To hear Avi, the original bass singer, try Hallelujah or Mary Did You Know. For some changes of pace, try Evolution of Music, Daft Punk, Love Again, 90s Dance Medley, Problem.

Thank you for the list! I don't think I've heard their hallelujah version... but I've heard many from other artists that I like a lot. I think the Christmas song I heard was Marry did you know.
@Badger7772211 ай бұрын
@@MrsRealistic That's a great one, and it's also pretty high on their "most viewed" video list. The official video of Hallelujah is their most viewed, but there's another version I will also recommend - performed live for a 2016 Christmas TV special. I am glad to see you checking out Pentatonix as well as Home Free. You will enjoy Voiceplay as well. They are known as the 'top three' a cappella groups, but there are a few others you should try as you have time, or if you come across them, like Voctave, The Hound and The Fox, The Bass Gang, The Wellermen, and quite a few more. Take your time, and don't overwhelm yourself.

There is no emotional defense with great music. I've heard this since it came out and still it brought tears to my eyes! I hate Disturb's version. Will not listen to it. The guy who sings so high, does it well without his privates being cut off. (Watch the Casanova movie). The woman brings in the soul and passion. The song is about alienation even in a crowd. Love the costuming and ser. Perfection.

Todd Hoffman’s video and version of The Sound of Silence was the first time, after decades of listening to S & G’s original, where the song finally clicked with me. Then I heard Disturbed’s version. The soulful buildup and explosive crescendo is phenomenal! Theirs is the best cover imho. But PTX is a close second.
