Soap & Clay is a family owned business operating in Washington State, but started out online thanks to Mrs. Soap & Clay's kickass brother and his amazing web design skills. The business was started as a tribute to Mrs. Soap & Clay's grandmother, the OG maker in the family that cultivated everyone's love for the DIY life. The studio/retail shop opened in 2017 on 6th Ave in Tacoma, and immediately began teaching soap, bath bomb, lotion, and scrub classes to the makers and maker enthusiasts of the PNW. In 2019, the pottery studio opened as well, making the soap shop a busy place full of artistic energy every minute of the day.
Mrs. Soap & Clay has been featured on Business Spotlight, New Day Northwest, and was awarded a coveted place on the South Sound's 40 under 40 list in 2019, an award given to the most influential business people under the age of 40 each year. She cried when she walked up to the podium to accept the award. A lot.
Drawing from her chemistry background and her maker spirit, Mrs. Soap & Clay infuses her favorite things into her soapy designs and creates products that are fun to see, use, and learn to make. Stick around for this ride - she'll take you on a great one.

So I’ve only made a total of 3 soaps with a coffee lye solution and 2 of them I did use discoloring FO, but the one I didn’t use a discoloring FO still turned out dark. I did the beach themed salt bar with the coffee infused lye solution with that one and all the blues and greens I used came out browned up lol. You could still tell they were supposed to be blue and green but they were definitely muddied. I’m loving all this! You’re amazing for doing all these experiments for us and teaching us all the things, and I just want you to know I’m one of the very excited ones and Thank you! ❤️ can’t wait until next week too omg all this is so dang cool!

I still love the lighter color of that caramel looking one. It’s still got that tone even after darkening. But that lather in the last one was gorgeous!

This is my favourite way to make my coffee soaps ... I sell it to tradesmen, gardeners, and pretty much anyone who gets dirty and grimy ... fantastic soap outcome!

The coffee grounds is what causes the discolouration ... I don't use a scent in mine at all, but make it the same way you just made this one, and they discolour ...

I've used coffee grounds as an exfoliation, but they were dried after use. Makes way more sense to use fresh after all I've learned 😁

I ❤ this whole serious! It is really nice to see the experiments. I am new so it helps me to not come out with brown soap because it has vanilla in it!

Thank you so much for the science part of this, love it. It is one of the reasons I first started watching your videos last year, my soap making ability has been expanded, Gratitude always for your effort and willingness to share. I made my first batch of coffee soap 3 years ago. I had no fancy ingredients, not even coffee EO. I was so nervous but decided to use brewed coffee in place of water I thought I was messing up science. I used a mix of essential oils, woodsy scents and a couple others, i do not remember now, but a mix to mimic best I could Coffee smell. The batch turned a little dark but not much. Since then every batch I have made I have used coffee EO, and every batch has wildly discolored. some more than others, depends on the vendor. I use the same recipe except my most recent, I used Aloe instead of coffee and forgot the salt (i don't use sodium lactate or steric acid, daughter has allergies, why I started making soap). It discolored as dark as all others, as well as it was harder, I ended up cutting it 14 hours after I molded it. It is still curing so not sure how hard and dark the end product will be. My thoughts, coffee EO is very volatile in discoloration, I haven't used extract so not sure if it works the same as EO or not, but a thought. My favorite bar you made is the last one....Its the look of the bubbles, I am a sucker for large bubbles with a lot of lather around it.

That's some wicked discoloration 😮 They all ultimately are great soaps, I'd just lean more towards the 2 made with coffee butter for the extra moisture. Love you and the content and all the things. Keep it coming

I make a pot of coffee then dry the grounds. Then add the dried grounds to my soap batter. It is amazing. My husband likes it after he works on engines or greasy things.

I love the luxurious tight bubbles that feel like lotion on your skin. That being said, I like #2 followed by #1. To me, the look of soaps is secondary, though these soaps look lovely. I look for how a soap performs and makes the skin feel and what the ingredients are in the soaps. All of these look pretty and perform fantastically. I'd be happy using any one of them, especially #2 and #1. Love your 'performance' videos! Good show!

Very interesting for sure! For a mechanics soap, would you think coffee grinds be better than pumice? Hmm...next experiment please 😂

And with all that, it is still a pretty bar of soap and I like it lots! I liked them all , dark colors or not and I like a dense lather so the second on the left would have been my favorite.

Okay -- am I being totally dense?!? -- but I didn't see any mention this week of how to calculate lye amounts for your soap recipe when using your own DIY coffee butter as one of the fats/oils. Am I missing something? Thanks!

Hey! I talked about the differences in soapcalc during the coffee butter and coffee oil soaps.
@askloeblen

@@MrsSoapAndClay Yes, I saw those parts, but I'm still unclear -- chalk it up to being somewhat of a newbie still. Sorry. (I have 6 batches of cold process soap under my belt, including one that was my own recipe, plus 2 batches of melt & pour, and some skin care products like lip balm, triple butter body butter, deodorant, shaving cream, & face moisturizer.) Soooo, say I was to create my own hypothetical coffee butter using a 75%/25% ratio of cocoa butter to coffee oil that had been infused in safflower oil. Then I wanted to use 4 ounces of said coffee butter in my soap recipe. Could I go on SoapCalc and count the 4 ounces of coffee butter as being essentially 3 ounces (75%) of cocoa butter and 1 ounce (25%) of safflower oil for the purposes of calculating the lye? I so very much appreciate your help! Just wanting to be sure I understand it correctly. ☑ Thanks again so much for these wonderful videos this week!
