The Timesert Insert normaly locks itself. The last 2-3 Threads aren't fully cut. So when a bolt gets screwed into it, it widens the insert locking it into place. Atleast that's the case for the TimeSerts I know.

They make inserts that have pins that lock them in after the insert is threaded all the way in. Oh and no need for a chamfer.

The locktite will hold better if you wash out the hole and the outside of the insert with brake parts cleaner then blow dry. Use anti seize on the bolt going inside the insert and the insert should last for years without backing out.

Love timesert inserts. Very easy to install and don't really need a installation tool. Way better than helicoils.

@@johnny0454 No special tool needed to install, and since its a solid wall it has more integrity and strength, has thread locker and sealant which wont leak into the inside due to the solid wall. Not huge differences but appreciated ones.

If you dont have a chamfer bit, you can always use a much larger drill bit with very light pressure also works for countersink.

Have you ever had the timesurts insurt stop be for being flush or below surface. I've done hundreds of there in aluminum housing for allison filter covers bolt holes. I made a small tool to install the insurt flush be for running the set tool through the insurt. Also I've switched to using green bearing tight lock tight on the out side threads. Seriously, I wish I lived in your neck of the woods so I could beg you to let me apprentice with you lol. Maybe then I could fix the little problems on the '06 Baja I just bought. I've wanted 1 since '03 and FINALLY had the chance. Her name is Charlize, BTW and she has 86K miles and almost zero rust (I have you to thank for figuring out how to check her out). So ... YAY ME! You will have guy's like this near you, you just have to find them. Go to the local car meets, build relationships. Get to know the guy's locally who run garage. Go through track days, off-roading or whatever guy's who own the same car do. It's a small community so it's not difficult to find If you go to the right places. My dad was racing from the end of the 50's till the early to mid 70's and they know every generation since. Back then they were all engineers, Look on your local social media pages or just post and ask. You'll always find something with a few miles. Good luck. And if it makes you feel better many of the older guys genuinely enjoy teaching the younger generations. They just don't want to waste their time. So as long as you show that you're willing to learn they're often more than happy to teach you.

Most of the time, the steel inserts literally are better than original/new. The insert's internal steel threads are way stronger, and the external threads are based on a larger diameter.

I would have chamfered before tapping. A chamfer ensures that the tap goes in true, and chamfering after tapping can collapse the starting threads. That usually only matters with 1/4-20 and smaller though.

Hey Mr Subaru. This is a follow up comment. I replaced both shifter bushings (as recommended) using your video as a guide. Afterwards the shifter definitely felt much better, but still in the wrong place. Neutral is now essentially positioned in what should be 3rd. So first is 3rd, second is 4th, third is 5th, fourth is R, and fifth and reverse are just way over there where it shouldn’t be. Like I said, it was a problem after the shop replaced the shifter fork. Any ideas? Might need professional attention? Still works just fine, just off.

It is possible to install the shift linkage rod incorrectly. This will cause the shifter to be way off center but still functional.

Steele threads are definitely better than aluminum. The insert cold forges in, the loctite is extra insurance.
