That ending scene may be one of the best endings to an episode of Doctor Who. I love that after all the chaos and danger and adventure, the two of them are just like "everything's going to die in the end. Let's get chips." It perfectly sums up the half-tragic half-optimistic tone that Russell brought to his era, which has arguably been the one thing that has consistently been carried throughout the entire revival

It's always been the highlight of this episode that 9 proactively took Rose to the end of the Earth as her first adventure. What was going through 9's mind that this would be something he enjoyed as Rose is thrust into a very self-refelctive moment. If not for the contrivance of the plot, this episode would probably have a lot more outspokenness about it.

I feel like the wobbly ser trope is untrue to some extent. Not saying it didn’t happen, but it’s widely exaggerated. I’d say the costumes were more unconvincing than the sets most of the time.

It's like if they made the Cantina scene from Star Wars but like 45 minutes long. The music even slaps!

6:19 he was only ever gonna take her to the year 5 Billion. Even if she asked to go back in time, he would have manipulated the situation. This is his first post-War companion. He's lost and vulnerable, and he's not even sure what he's supposed to do now. He needs more than an assistant, he needs someone who understands. Someone to connect with; to be separated, together. So he takes her to see her planet burn. We see the Metaltron Dalek going through the same loneliness complex in Dalek, emphasized in the recent novelisation. _"I AM ALONE IN THE UNIVERSE. SO ARE YOU. WE ARE THE SAME."_ / _"ARE YOU FRIGHTENED, ROSE? SO AM I."_ The greatest war in the cosmos, whittled down to two survivors. And all they want is connection. People never talk about how selfish this Doctor is. We laugh at the dropped script which had the relevation that 9 had groomed Rose from infancy to become "the perfect companion", but is it _so_ out of character? Easily the most manipulative Doctor.

I think I saw it as less selfishness and more just vulnerability driving him to extremes. It's probably cause we saw 7 who didn't have any kind of trauma, or thing causing him to act the way he did. So because of 9's circumstances we tend to give him more rope (it would have snapped with the rose grooming thing) I think it also interesting that 9 grants Rose something he can't have, the chance to go back in time and see her world before it was blown up. And to his credit it's the first thing he does after she sees the earth burn. He immediately tries to put right the hurt he's caused.

The joke of Cassandra once being a boy...THAT is a “What Can I Say But Yikes” moment... If you don’t understand why, just watch CynicalWho’s video on Transgender representation in Doctor Who

This episode is one that has grown on me over the years. The scene of Cassandra getting ripped apart terrified me as a child

It never occurred to me until this watch-through, but I wonder if the use of the songs "Toxic" and "Tainted Love" was supposed to underpin Rose's uncertainty about her newfound relationship with the Doctor? Maybe I'm stretching with that, since there doesn't seem to be any "romantic" layers to their dynamic yet, except for the, "Some date you are!" joke in the last scene, but it popped into my head.

I like that you're doing a new review every week! I can't wait to hear your thoughts on The Unquiet Dead - that was the one that officially made me a Doctor Who fan.

What I don't like of the trees of Cheem is that they have two eyes. Plants don't have central organs or each of their senses. That's why they survive when cut. Nothing about them is central and is easily replacable. They should've had many eyes.

Don’t. Diss. The Pakoos. Edit: so after finishing you’ve given me a new outlook upon the story. I’ve always seen it as a bit like the Twin Dilemma. A bad story after a good one. But it’s the little details about the time war that work.

Yeah I think you're right, that this is the first time we've seen tears from the Doctor. Speaking of tears... I think that's one of the things I've missed in the Chibnall era. The first 10 seasons are littered with moments of intense emotion from the Doc and companions, but reactions from 13, Ryan, Yaz and Graham have mostly been muted, suppressed, flat. It appears to be a creative choice but it's not one I'm liking.

I thought rose getting slapped and being unconscious was a good bit because it reenforced the stakes of the doctor saving rose.

One thing I would have done in this episode with the creatures is throw in some classic monsters, like maybe have one or two sensorites or draconians or something , you know. Just a thought.

I loved "Rose", but wasn't too keen on "End of the World". But when I then saw "The Unquiet Dead", I realized what the show was about. I didn't know much about Doctor Who, so when it it me that The Doctor can go anywhere in time and space, I knew this was the show for me.

Why are there so many people who think this episode is weak? I find it one of the best ever in the whole DW history. Honest question. I would like to understand where people are coming from.
