Warren Buffett. He has $80 billion and still lives in a house he purchased in the 1958 for $35k which is now worth 600k. Nice house, but not even remotely proportional to his wealth. Calling him a cheapskate would be unfair. He is just very frugal and unpretentious. He'd rather spend money on philanthropy and reinvestment.

My grandma was born in 1922. I wouldn't say she was cheap, but her parents instilled in her if there was food on your plate you eat it. She instilled that in my father and him in me. It's funny, because I'll say I'm full and keep eating, and my mom will be like stop and I'll be like but there's still food
@NewGothOnTheBlock

My grandfather (mother’s side) was born in 1928 and exactly the same way!. He would even take it up a notch by giving me more when I was done eating. Even when I was bursting I never said anything because I didn’t wanted to be rude and knew from his many stories that he knows what it’s like to have next to nothing. It wasn’t until later that my grandmother and mother sat us both down that I finally said No when I was full, but always tell him “thank you” when he offered. Grandparents are still here today and they’re amazing 🖤

My great-grandmother raised her two sons before the Great Depression but she had been a homesteader (and necessarily frugal) beforehand. Until she was hospitalized for a massive stroke in 1983 she kept up her garden, a small orchard, chickens, and rabbits to minimize what she'd need to buy. Her cellar was full of home canning, dry goods, and preserved meats - if the worst happened, she could probably have lived her life as usual for most of a decade. (I've seen small grocery stores with less inventory than what she kept on hand.) My grandparents (also who raised me) were married in 1927 and raised five kids through the Great Depression. They always kept two refrigerators, three pantries, and a large chest freezer stocked. Fridge #1 was for daily use; fridge #2 was 'staging' - either overflow from fridge #1 (say, eggs were on sale so my grandmother bought an extra 3-4 dozen) or stuff from the freezer she expected to use in the next week or two; pantry #1 was all canned goods; pantry #2 was all dry goods; pantry #3 was stuff like cooking spray, foil, cleaning supplies, etc; the freezer was restocked anytime meat or frozen vegetables were on sale. She also bought dishes, towels, tablecloths, and the like from restaurant suppliers' end stocks - super-high-end stuff, but dirt-cheap because their inventory for any specific item was too small to interest commercial buyers. My grandfather could build and/or repair virtually anything and wasted nothing. He built a carousel from my old baby food jars to store nuts, washers, and small nails; saved coffee cans for larger bolts and nails; salvaged a few old oil drums to store assorted metal stock; made and repaired his own fishing nets; kept tools and supplies on-hand to resole his boots and shoes; etc. When the family camper (a 1951 Thames Freighter with a pop-up) blew the engine, he bought a 1953 Ford Falcon for parts - swapped the engine and transmission; built a custom driveshaft (because the 'new' powertain was longer); rebuilt the differential (because the 'new' powertrain turned the opposite direction); taught me how to work on cars by rebuilding the leftover parts back into a working car; used the Falcon's front spindles and body panels, and his supply of metal stock, to build a new trailer and then hauled the remaining parts out to the old family homestead to bury in the ground to stop a gully from eroding further. Tail end of summer vacation was marked by getting together with all my cousins to see what clothes fit whom (aside from skirts and dresses, with no concern for gender - my cousin Steve wasn't thrilled to wind up with pink jeans and a yellow tee with a "Juicy!" iron-on). To this day, I still cringe at throwing out anything which still has potential use. I've been a big proponent of "freecycling" - if there's something I absolutely don't need but it's still in good condition, I'll find someone who needs it to give it to. I only have a small upright freezer and a single fridge, but I regularly target sales to keep at least two month's supply of food on-hand. When I was a 'den mother', the guys were amazed that I cut their food bills by 70% while still buying more and better food than they were accustomed to. A former fiancé was astonished that the 'amount saved' on my regular shopping trips was usually larger than the amount I actually spent. I even spent $4700 on a kitchen remodel that included high-end appliances, custom oak cabinets, and top-of-the-line granite countertops that ended up adding nearly $28,000 to the appraised value. Nowadays, however, I think the biggest factor is the prices we grew up with. I'd been driving more than a decade before gas prices topped $1/gallon; candy bars and comic books were a quarter, as were store-brand canned veggies; etc. Though I've adjusted some, I've still got this 'inventory' in the back of my mind for what most things should cost - if a price seems too high, I'll find some way to manage without (if that's not an option, I'll figure out a way to make it stretch as far as possible).

Grenades were a thing back in Colonial times with the grenadiers but the arming process was slow and the explosives were quite heavy consisting of a cast iron ball and some explosive inside (such as black powder) so the use of grenadiers is usually used as an extension of infantry and musket fodder

As a fellow historian (and coin collector) I just want to correct something Mr. Terry said. Actually at this time currency DID have intrinsic value. Keep in mind this was the era of the gold standard. A £5 quintuple sovereign coin back then was over 1 troy oz of gold. Gold did indeed and still does have intrinsic value.

Also lmao at Mr. Terry's narrow eyed look of scrutiny when asked "are you the fedora kid?" 😹💀

I usually hate reaction videos. However, the ones here I keep finding myself coming to. There's actual content that's added from Mr. Terry here be that in other unknown knowledge of the time not in the original videos or that he fully says "I ACTUALLY didn't know that" and explains on why it's wild to him. Count me in on the Subscriber base. Keep up the good reaction videos and we can weed out the weak ones that just steal content outright. There's even enough respect for other creators videos as he let's their sponsor ads run their course. Something MANY other reaction channels just skip over to get to the good bits. Keep up the good work Mr. Terry.

My grandma kept everything, containers food came in, rubber bands packaged around produce, the little plastic clips on plastic bread bags, etc etc. This is beacuse she grew up in World War 2 here in Norway, and due to rationing alot of basic things were harder to come by, hence she always hated throwing things out. I mean I have taken some of her ideas since they are just smart in general, but I never once saw her use one of those bread bag clippy things, what did she thing she needed them for? Maybe for storing bread, but that would already come with a new clip on the bag, and I dont mean she had 10-15, no sir she must have had atleast 200 of those things, and not once did I ever see her use one for anything.

"The reason that the rich were so rich, Vimes reasoned, was because they managed to spend less money. Take boots, for example. He earned thirty-eight dollars a month plus allowances. A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of OK for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars. Those were the kind of boots Vimes always bought, and wore until the soles were so thin that he could tell where he was in Ankh-Morpork on a foggy night by the feel of the cobbles. But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in ten years' time, while the poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet. This was the Captain Samuel Vimes 'Boots' theory of socioeconomic unfairness." - Terry Pratchett, Men at Arms: The Play

I mean she could afford it cause she saved so much but my god every time I went to visit her its like a whole new house >.> but one thing she didnt spend money on was a car. She never drove and took public transport everywhere so i guess she saved a lot that way. Hold up. I haven’t bought a new shirt in ever. I get hand me downs from my mother. And sometimes they still have the tags on them. So I have no need for buying new shirts. But I do buy new pants. Especially work pants

Some currency does hold intrinsic value in the form of its physical value. A gold doubloon melted down can be used for something.

I like how he uses the example of not using the air conditioning which saves money as something a little cheapstaky when it could just be you’re trying to preserve the environment 🤷‍♂️idk

Putting your windows down while driving puts more drag on the car which makes the car work more than the AC.

well i came from a family wwhere we struggled to even have enough to put food on the table so now i pretty much save everything i earn, if its not broken it doesnt need change, i havent bought clothes in over 6 years, i never go out for dinner,never been inside a starbucks, never tried mac donalds i have a drivers license but i avoid driving unless its really far out and i cant get public transportation for cheaper, it served me well by the time i was 25 i had a fully paid house that i built the way i wanted with enough land that i raise my own animals for meat and produce aswell, and because of the land laws of where im from i only pay 200 euros a year in land tax

About scrooge mc duck swimming in money. it is actually canon, that in the duck universe it is impossible to swim in money for the obvious reasons. Scrooge mc duck is the only person who can do this.

Would saying that I remember minimum wage being $2.75 - $3.25 an hour make me sound old? Cause I remember when gas was 79 cents a gallon, $10 bucks got you a pack of smokes and 4-6 gallons of gas back then. Edit* today that same $10 get either 2 1/2 gallons of gas or a pack of smokes.
