Don't send it to all, just the good ones. The one we unfortunately have has very boring lessons, simplifies the most important parts of history (World Wars, 30 Years War, modern history) and rather talks about those that interest him (prehistory, Mezopothamia...), and some facts he said are literally wrong. Yesterday he told us that the Battle of Verdun lasted 3 weeks, but I know it was 303 days, so I told the correct facts at least my friends.

My great granddad was in the Royal Engineers. He was a sapper. Basically he helped to dig the trenches on the frontline. He was a professional soldier. He was already in the army when the war started so he was not conscripted. He survived to the end of the war. He kept a diary. He talks about men getting gassed. His mates being killed and wounded in front of him. Escorting rations carts through Ypres at night. Pack horse blown to smithereens. Heavy shelling everywhere. Huge battles at Ypres. Apparently according to my Nan her dad hated gardening. I am very proud of him and all the men and women. Animals as well who served in the First World War.

I have not seen those videos, but the title seems fishy. There were A LOT of close calls. Dunkirk, air-battle for Britain, operation Barbarossa, pearl harbor... Yes there absolutely was a point of no return (probably Stalingrad), but at the start of the war, it really was a lot closer than most people think.
@airstrike9002
@airstrike9002 5 жыл бұрын
@@noneofyourbusiness3288 well he talks about some arguments that people use as to how Germany could've won. Like people say that if the allies had more losses at Dunkirk, Sealion could happen or D-day was impossible but in reality Sealion was never going to work because the UK had a superior fleet and could maintain air superiority over the channel. D-day still would've happened, because the Americans could still easily fill the gaps of troops and supply more weapons.
@noneofyourbusiness3288
@noneofyourbusiness3288 5 жыл бұрын
@@airstrike9002 The thing with Dunkirk is that it could have left the UK with too many losses to defend against a possible invasion of the British Isles, which you would need as a staging point for D-day. Dunkirk would have increased the chances of an operation Sealion, which also was a lot closer than people think. (Germany decided to focus more on bombing civilian targets instead of military ones, as payback, but it did not succeed in breaking the British fighting spirit, so it really was wasted bombs)
@airstrike9002
@airstrike9002 5 жыл бұрын
@@noneofyourbusiness3288 Noneofyour Business well except that it still would be too hard to invade, the Kriegsmarine would never be able to support a full scale invasion since it's a lot weaker than the British fleet. And the British maintained air superiority due to a lot of reasons, for example the one you mentioned. As soon as the Germans would make an attempt to invade their ships would be sunk before they even landed. And even if they landed they would be without any supply. There's also a reason why Dunkirk was a failure for the Germans. The trapped french soldiers held them off until the bitter end so the British could escape. and the invading Germans ran out of supply which stopped them from attacking because their flanks might get exposed. Also don't forget that the majority of the war is played on the eastern front, so even if a D-day would be impossible, (which would already be surprising) the Soviets have the Germans on the run as soon as 1943, way before D-day. All that would've happened is the Germans lasting for a few extra months.
@noneofyourbusiness3288
@noneofyourbusiness3288 5 жыл бұрын
@@airstrike9002 yes of course there are a lot of breaking points to the German war effort, each of them could single-handedly spiral into defeat. As you mentioned: the eastern front. The straw (or rather massive freaking log) that broke the camels back was declaring war on the USSR while Britain is still no occupied. There is a reason for swift action against the USSR, as you dont want to give them time to reorganize their army after Stalins purges and give them time for their economy to switch into war-gears, but a 2-front war is probably always a bad idea.

Sam Mendez is greatly skilled and creative. He grew up hearing stories from his grandfather. His grandfather was a front lines messanger. He personally wrote and directed this. It also is filmed as a single take! I think it'll be crazy intense. Massive work went into the entire project. There are incredible things like, there is one entire scene that the only light source is actual flares being fiired into the sky. As the veiwer, you get the exact amout of light that the soldiers would have...they dont add any light...

I’m currently reading “Hundred Days” by Nick Lloyd, great book so far. He emphasized how by 1917 as the Americans made it to the front how the French and British were taken aback by the physical size of the US soldier. So, yeah, by 1917 the French and British were filling the front lines with very young men, so much so they physically hadn’t matured yet. Great video!

All of my history classes in both high school and college sucked at teaching history. They grazed over everything. We barely spent 2 days on one topic as they just tried to cram as much of the basic information about everything as they possibly could instead of spending the time to dig deep into each event. There are a few reasons why I am interested much more in WWI than WWII. The first, to put it in the words of Mr. Terry, is because of how much WWII "painfully overlooks" WWI. There is so much in how warfare changed with the use of trenches, the mass use of shotguns in said trenches by the U.S., the introduction of handheld machine guns, long-range artillery, and being one of the first wars to reach death tolls in the millions in such a short amount of time. Another reason is because for almost a year now, I've been playing Battlefield 1 (which is based around WWI locations/battles, weapons, and vehicles), which is what really got me interested in the Great War because I knew almost nothing about it beforehand. Now, I find it more interesting than WWII.

And yeah WWI a big shock for the soldiers involved in it, no one was expecting war to be like this. Last major war in Europe was the Napoleonic wars and last one in America was their civil war, both fought with muskets, cavalry, and cannons. The veterans from that war were still alive at the time WWI started and you can imagine grandfathers telling their grandchildren war stories about their time and these children grow up with that idea of what war was like. The men grow up, WWI starts, and they’re so excited to join up but then they get thrown into this completely different era of warfare that’s terrifying and nothing they could’ve ever imagined. Guns the size of houses, constant bombardment, machine guns, the introduction of tanks, poison gas. These men truly suffered and aren’t really remembered that much today(in America) hopefully this movie gets WWI the attention it deserves

WWI is not forgotten in the UK (or in the Commonwealth or in France). Every little town and village has a memorial commemorating it's lost sons and it's heartbreaking to read them. Even small places lost multiple young men, out of proportion to the places' populations. Every 11th November poppy wreaths are placed on the memorials and the whole country remembers. Lest we forget.

In the UK particularly we do remember our WW1 soldiers including the valuable and essential assistance we had from America in the last year of the war when the allies were finally able to get out of the trenches and fight more mobile battles. I’d suggest that anyone who hasn’t seen a Stanley Kubrick film called “Paths of Glory” with Kirk Douglas, does so soon if you plan to watch 2017, it’s an incredible film on many levels. You made a comment about the UK conscripting soldiers early in the video, this actually started in 1916, half way through the war as the original BEF (British Expeditionary Force) had been decimated and the enthusiasm for the war was starting to wane. If you google “pals battalions’ you’ll read about the lengths the UK had to go to find enough soldiers and the terrible consequences for small towns and villages. By the way, if you review “The King” don’t think for a minute it reflects real history, it doesn’t !

It's not the Third Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele) it's set in the German retreat to the Hindenburg Line, early in 1917, although it remains to be seen how accurate it will be. The storyline of British soldiers deep in enemy territory and having to be warned that they will be walking into a trap sounds doubtful. Still, I'll probably give it a shot, of only to shout at the film when they get it obviously wrong.

I’m excited for both films I love history especially during the world wars. I’m more excited for “1917” as there are not many major WW1 films. & the fact that Roland Emmerich directed “Midway” doesn’t give me much hope. He is very hit and miss with films and is like Michael Bay, needs explosions every 5 mins.

US declared war on April 6th. The end of the American Civil War, Petersburg resembled WWI. The British were also running out of men. On the Eastern front there was a great deal of maneuvering. The book I am working on now is the role of the anti-war movement post WWI and its effect on the Washington Treaty and naval policy. Definitely looking forward to 1917. Did not know it existed before this video. Thank you. I am waiting for a Jultand or Scapa Flow movie (about the scuttling of the High Seas Fleet!)

You should have perhaps mentioned that a lot of these 'men' were in fact younger than 18 - some of the youngest were 15 and 16. I spotted quite a few soldiers in the film who definitely looked around that age. Also conscription had a huge impact on British soldiers, I think the comment at about 6:45 that conscription affected Britain less was a little unfair.

The film is fiction but has truthful elements in it. In 1917, the Germans withdrew to what they thought was an impregnable position called The Hindenburg Line. In doing so, they abandoned their trenches and blew up their own guns - that is shown in the film. Although it is possible to characterise the war as a massive stalemate, it is also possible to characterise it as a huge learning curve. By this stage of the war, the Allies had perfected the rolling barrage - firing shells just in front of an infantry advance. The purpose of this was to deny the Germans the opportunity to get out of their trenches and man the machine guns. The Brits, in particular, used spotting from aircraft, coupled with sound ranging and trigonometry to pinpoint enemy gun positions and knock them out with accurate artillery fire before an attack had begun. These were just a few of the lessons learned. By 1918, the trenches were abandoned and it became a much more mobile war, with stormtroopers and flame throwers (both German innovations). In that sense, it paved the way for how subsequent battles were fought.

My grandmother was born in Austria during WW2 and my great grandfather was a priest during WW1. This movie is very sad, but what's even sadder is that a story like this one has probably happened in real life and more than just one time. This movie is another reminder of how fucking awful war is and why we don't want that shit to ever happen again.

I remember many men in wheelchairs when i was young perhaps a left over from that war and my next door neighbour had a metal plate in his head due to WW1 .

6:38 I just want to touch on your comments of countries affected by conscription. For WW1 Australia and New Zealand both sent conscripted men to fight together for the British crown, Australia specifically sent 416,809 men. At that point in time we had a total population of around 4.9 million which works out to be about 38.7% of our entire male population aged between 18 - 44 sent to Europe to fight Britain's war. During the period of the 4th of August 1914 to the 11th of November 1918, there were 59,357 deaths. On average 38 members of the Australian armed forces died per day during the 1,560 days of the war. For countries like mine this absolute insanity of wasted life defined our nation.

In 1917 Germany tried to break the Allies will and resolve by attrition. The reserves from Russia built super bunkers well behind the trenches, built new trench systems, and then retreated. The Allies followed and then as they were getting into the trenches, Germany bombed the hell out of them.

The British were conscripting hard from the beginning, and taking on very young men (boys) from the start. As others have suggested, you should watch They Shall Not Grow Old if you are a historian. You will see that the attitude of the recruits before and after the war was extraordinary. My own Great Uncle enlisted aged 14, and had his horse shot from under him. My grandfather took a shell through the knee and lay on the battlefield for two days before being carried off. From documentary evidence, most were more than glad to serve, regardless of their fate.

Of the two war movies I'm looking forward to most is 1917, now taking out my bias against Roland Emmerich and overly CGI designs, the trailer for 1917 gave me more suspense and enticed me to the point that I want to see it, but like you said other two world wars world war 1 is the one that gets glossed over more and doesn't get as much coverage as World War II, so I'm also more interested in seeing something about the first World War.

I don't think Americans really understood WW1, hence not so many movies. If you asked how the British became involved, they wouldn't have a clue. Britain was one of the last European countries to declare war. It wasn't until the Germans invaded Belgium, Britain was the Belgium protectorate and base the BEF there. British boy soldiers were an average of 14 to 15 years old. Then the government was pressured to make a stand and ordered the Army to repatriate the boy soldiers.
