After the bout with the Dweller of Strife, the Fleshmancer tells his acolytes that they'll fuse with it, emphasizing they'll be a king of a new race. Given what the DoS looks like, my assumption is that this is how the Demon King from The Messenger comes to be. The way I see it, The Messenger is a reality where the warriors failed.

It shows up again in The Messenger as it's the 2nd phase of the boss fight with The Demon King. Which is hinted to be the fate of it, along with the Acolytes. Except in that game it's defeated by flying into sunlight. Which doesn't make any sense considering how the Dwellers are implied to only be vulnerable during an eclipse.
