I recommend Tsukishima. I know I may be biased as he's my uncle, but I do believe he is the perfect candidate for the following reasons: He helped Ichigo save Rukia, helped him defeat Ulquiorra to save Orihime, and he helped defeat both Aizen and Yhwach. He is also shown to have taught Byakuya everything he knows, so he is clearly very experienced and has clearly been a shinigami for a long time. Lastly, I just want to say that my uncle, Tsukishima, is very smart and loyal, and he is practically friends with everyone. So why wouldn't you vote for him?

Honestly, I never felt Central 46’s fear of Kenpachi was earned. He’s a brute but he never seemed like he’d betray Soul Society. 46 are genuinely some of the biggest dumbasses in the verse. And completely agree with Shinji not being weak, it’s just Kubo treating him like utter shit unfortunately

The only kenpachi they know prior to Kenpachi Zaraki is Unohana, and lets say Unohana is uncontrolable by anyone other than Yamamoto, and even Yamamoto know Zaraki is stronger than him, if he, Yamamoto don't use bankai, something he will not use against anyone other than Yhwach, so make sense central 46 fear Zaraki "without" reason.

Which is quite ironic, considering the Original 13 Captains were a group of ruthless criminals. Being Head-Captain does not mean you have to be paragon of virtue. Both Yama and Kyoraku are pretty firmly in the "Ends justify the means" camp. Which Mayuri very much also fits into. Besides, Mayuri is one of the biggest heroes of the TYBW. If nothing else, you know that he can gets stuff done during a big conflict.

Byakuya is a decent choice, but he's missing a few crucial qualities. He's not a war dog like Shunsui and he's not a brute like Old Man Yama, so someone like Kenpachi would never listen or follow him and that directly affects his leadership skills. Also, he's not a people person lol you have to be a people person to deal with all the other captain's personalities. Also, he's not that loyal which is a big trait in and of itself lol he was ready to straight up butchers his own sister and at the moment, he's not strong enough. He doesn't hold a candle to Shunsui or Old Man Yama at this point, he might down the line but it is unlikely. He's definitely not a bad pick though, pretty decent for an interim head captain role

I like Byakuya as the next Head Captain honestly. I see Toshiro as the contrast to Yamamoto, but not in terms of being a head captain. Him being strong and ice-oriented. Byakuya is literally on paper the best choice.

Shinji is too underrated and for me he is propably the best choice. Old enough to have the right experience, young enough to have a mind open to new possibilities. In my opinion, he has one of the best Zanpaktou, he is very fast and cunning and hollowfication allows him to attack even more interesting (Bala, Cero). Not without reason, of all the Vizards, he became the leader, even though they had 3 other captains. Although people may underestimate him because of the comedy scenes with his participation, he still seems to be the best choice

I can honestly see Shinji becoming Head Captain especially since the war basically scared away all the hardline nobles and surviving Central 46 members, making them self imposed prisoners in their mansions. That with the general reformation combined with the abandonment of old archiac traditions regarding membership requirements means we may see some unexpected and unheard of people become Captains including eventually Commander.

Someone commented on another video that Hitsugaya represents the openminded/just future that the Seireitei is heading towards, away from its ruthless past (Yamamoto) and grayish present (Kyoraku). Assuming/Hoping that Kyoraku lives a long time and serves as head captain for another 500-1000 years, Hitsugaya might be the best choice when the spot opens up again. If Kyoraku dies tomorrow, then yeah, Byakuya, you're up. Considering that Hitsugaya knows what it's like to grow up in poverty (having lived in Rukongai and knowing what Matsumoto went through), I think it'd be cool to see the changes he'd make to the power structures in SS. He knows that Central 46 is full of bs b/c of Kusaka, and he has enough exposure to Ichigo/humans that he has a more evolved sense of morality.

My money is on Toushiro based on what Kyorakku said of his potential. Toushiro is a genius, prodigy, and potentially the ice version of Captain Yamamoto.

I feel like too many people here dismiss Toshiro as a choice because of his lifespan. We know that Shinigami have extremely long lifespans that can last up to thousands of years, so even if Toshiro's lifespan was shortened it could also just mean that instead of 1000+ years he'll live for, let's say, "only" 500, which is still plenty of time, enough for him to achieve the required experience and emotional maturity anyway. After all Kyoraku said that Toshiro will surpass him in about 100 years, which means that by then he will have grown naturally in into his matured form and reached his full potential while STILL having time left to refine his skills even further and eventually achieve the position of Captain Commander. Also all these symbolic parallels between him and Yamamoto make me firmly believe that Kubo is actually foreshadowing the fact that Toshiro WILL eventually become Head Captain at some point, whether it's after Kyoraku or Byakuya (who would make the most sense as a successor as things are now).

The easiest way to have ended pernida was if pernida died before his schrift actually worked (If only zaraki either bothered to remove his eyepatch or use shikai, that should have been done). In some way, his bankai did counter Gerald, as gerald couldn't create a miracle to overpower zaraki at all and had to revive back due to "fear of masses". His decision isn't outright wrong, but the execution of it were just wrong.

yes Urahara is a genius, a tactical mastermind and has a lot of power but i really don't think he would be a good choice for the head captain. Here are my reasons: Urahara is first of all a scientist, he wants to research new things and that is his first priority, he would probably neglect his duty as a head captain if he would be promoted. And even if he wouldn't there is no way Urahara would have the time to research beside beeing head captain and Soulsociety would therefore lose their probably best scientist. Secondly Urahara does not inspire loyalty, he works in the shadows, but a leader must appear in the front and show strenght and support to his subordinates.

Totally agree with your assessment of Zaraki. If you're not a strong opponent or an enemy of the Gotei, then Zaraki nor the 11th Division will bother you. This heavily contrasts Mayuri, the actual evil captain in the current lineup. No one is safe from him no matter what.

Shinji, Byakuya and Hitsugaya are definitely the best possible choices for head captain. Byakuya obviously is the best one of them all since he has better control over his emotions, well verse in Zankensoki and represents the aspect of soul society. However, Shinji's has been a soul reaper much longer than any of the current captains and is smart in his own right. And as for Hitsugaya, he has room to grow and who knows, his Hyōrinmaru could potentially revival Yamamoto's Zanka no Tachi

Shinji to me seams the best choice. His intelligence, perceptiveness, and the fact he isn't tied politically to any of the major houses. Byakuya is young _and_ the head of the Kuchiki, Toshiro is even _younger_ and everyone else either doesn't have the power to be what the head captain needs to be.

Considering the major theme since FKT arc was to remove the presence of old generations (of which kyoraku is the last remaining senior captain). And the ise clan sword has the curse that the most person dearest person to the wielder would have their fate sealed and an eminent death. And that dearest person for nanao just ends up being kyoraku himself. Wouldn't be surprising if kyoraku were to die in the hell arc (if it ever resumes).

Hisagi Shuhei. I am half trolling but there's actually some nice threads in the story that connect him to Yamamoto and I think his whole philosophy and way of being would suit the position quite well. He has also been exposed to some of Soul Society's secrets and has mingled with the nobility. If he received a major boost when it comes to raw power to compliment his skills, I could see him has a head captain.

As much as Toshiro is "By the book" He is also quick to anger. I would love to see shinji because he had years of being a shinigami before being shunned and the unique perspective he shares on many sides of the world.

Don’t forget that Toshiro is still young. By our standards, he’s like 11 years old child. Everyone has a quick temper at that age. The thing that surprises me most is that Toshiro is, out of all the captains, the most reasonable, when he’s not angry. Shinji was, and is a playful trickster. He loves to “play around” a lot. Byakuya is literally the embodiment of a noble, so he thinks in the box, not like Kyoraku. The only thing that Kyoraku has over everyone, besides his strength, is that he would do ANYTHING to succeed. Just like Yama had been prior to Aizen events. Toshiro is bonded by his temper and fear of hurting everyone around him. Remember: he was the one to hurt his grandmother unknowingly. So he carries a burden of guilt, as well as the fear of his own powers. He gradually seems to, at least, try overcoming this, but as we see from the war arc, he holds back A LOT. Give him time, another 100-150 years and I think he would be the best Captain-Commander ever. Yes, even better than Yama-ji. If Kyoraku trains him and if he can overcome all of his mental barriers and limiters.

I think you hit the nail on the head when you said that Toshiro mirrors Yamamoto in that they both were rare powers that come along only once in a generation, if even that. Also the fire/ice comparison is hard to ignore. I always saw Toshiro as the de facto successor to Yamamoto and it’s interesting to see how different their power develops as one was nurtured through a well developed system surrounding the academy, and the other had to actually create that infrastructure from scratch. It’s interesting to think how powerful Yama would have been if he didn’t have to make it up as he went lol. I think you’re right that Toshiro’s day has not yet come, and in the interim Byakuya will be the best choice (Shinji is too noncompliant and I think being a Vizard disqualifies him outright, but he would be my personal pick). I believe Toshiro is and always has been the heir apparent to the ifrit that goes by Genryusai.

I personally think Shinji is the best option, and I didn't consider it until you said so. His temperament is a golden asset for sure, but more than that it's his people skills. Shinji is able to deftly some of the most emotionally volatile characters in the series. He knows how to be the big brother Momo needs, and when to be stern while mockingly playing to an ego like Mayuri. He'd be the boss that people feel, as cliche as it is to say, that "they could go for a drink with". Shinji for the win!

Mayuri... He's not even in my top 5 captain as my favorites but with out a doubt he was the MVP of the last arc. I think the thing that kept him in control with the soul society was his respect for the head captain. and his respect for science he could do while under the control of the 13 squads. He's also the only character in the series that we've seen literally talk shit to the head captain Yamato with no consequence... pretty great character

I believe people are ignoring a HUGE facor here: THE ABILITY TO DEAL WITH OTHERS! Interpersonal relationship!! Yes, byakuya is a great command for his division and for people who respect him, but how good he will be at delaing with the likes of Zaraki, or Mayuri? After reading Can't Fear Your Own World, I believe Shinji would be a better option. Yes, Byakuya developed a lot, he's not the "lil yama" tied to traditions he was at the begining, BUT he is the head of a noble house, meaning, his duties as a noble and as Head Captain could very easily conflict at some point. Of course, would make keeping nobles in check easier, BUT, Byakuya is also rather young and has few connections to the living world. Shinji is old as fuck, has the experience, the intelligence, and though not being as powerful, might have a better way of dealing with the Hueco Mundo alliance as he's a Vizard, is not tied to any noble house, and also has experience with the world of the living. My point is, his mind is not as "tied" to the Gotei and the Soul Society as Byakuya is. Of course, Byakuya is probably a great leader, and would be a good head captain, but one thing he also lacks is interpersonal relationship! I don't believe he would be very adpet at delaing with people like Zaraki, Mayuri or even Soi Fon. Shinji might not be someone Zaraki would consider strong, but I believe Shinji would be able to win him with words and his cunningness, Mayuri could be dealt with the same way as Shinji is smart enough to know when he's plotting something, but also not as confrontationally traditional as Byakuya, and in regards of the SOin Fon temperament, I believe he could deal with it since he deals with Hyori. I humbly believe Shinji would be a great option, but Byakuya would be a good choice as well and, as also shown by CFYW he would be the next choice to lead

I mean the captain commander wasn’t all that good at dealing with interpersonal aspects either, he was very much about order and discipline no nonsense guy when it came down to it. He left other captains like Hirako, Yuroichi and Shinji to mediate tension between the other captains. Which is honestly works just fine so long as you as a leader are aware of that and can pick people to cover those short comings. Being a good leader also means knowing when to delegate.

Think it depends on what sort of state the soul society is in. If its wartime...my vote would be Shinji for a similiar reason as to why Kyoraku was promoted; he will do what needs to be done. If its peace time, my vote would be Byakuya. Hes your typical example of what a captain should be, and a noble family member. Just makes sense. One that would never happen...but I personally think would make for a great head captain, is Urahara.

Love this video and it's something I've been thinking about on and off for a while. I would put my money behind Shinji personally, Toshiro would be a great HC in the far future and I was initially thinking Byakuya would be too obvious especially with the nobility - why be that tied to it? - but Tommo made the point that that's nothing new which is a great factor. All three are great selections as far as where the Gotei 13 is at now. Other thoughts are if she lived, Unohana would've made a stellar HC. I like others mentioning Urahara as well, definitely a wild card pick that would bring about some great story possibilities. And just for my own sake, damn, I wish Renji was a captain at the end of the manga along with Rukia. Don't get why he isn't frankly.

It depends on when the replacement is needed, I think Hitsugya is probably the one most suited to hold the role, and if Kyoraku can hold the position anywhere even close to as long as his predecessor did he may very well be ready when the time comes. I agree that if it comes sooner rather than later that Bayakuya is the most likely canidate, but I think Shinji would actually be the better fit (though I agree he probably wouldn't be given the chance). I think Bayakuya still has the weakness of his pride, in the fight with Gerrard, when he tells Hitsugya to fall back, yes he does it out of concern for a comrade, but he also has the attitude of "we can handle this without you" which the rest of the fight demonstrates they decidedly could not. I think he's still prone to underestimating threats as well as being goaded by threatening his pride. Shinji has demonstrated a better ability to keep a cool head than both of them, and like Kyoraku and Unohanna he has demonstrated a willingness to use underhanded tricks to secure a victory when necessary, something I think both Bayakuya and Hitsugya would struggle with to some extent.

If alive, thats Ukitake. He's respected as PHUCK, and stronger than anyone but, by a large maybe, Unohana, Shunsui and Zaraki! If released, Azashiro. He's far more feared than Zaraki, but he's also far more uncorruptible and capable than anyone, Aizen included, it seems!! If allowed by 46 clowns, Ichigo XD. If the need to fill the role became immediate, I'd say Byakuya. But if given time, it's say Hitsugaya. One consideration I think not being made is Urahara. I know him being such a fan favorite, that would almost be fan service, but the fact is he has the power, the intelligence, and the leadership capabilities to fill the role. And while often seen as jovial, so was Kyuraku. But like Kyuraku, he is also seen to be extremely serious and have deadly focus, when the need arises.

I think it depends on how long he lasts. If the next head captain is chosen sooner rather than later, than most likely it will be Byakuya. He is the only one that has the power, temperament, and experience necessary for the role. If more time passes however, I would put my money more on Toshiro. He is too young now, but he is already a model Shinigami in terms of duty and responsibility. And because he is a prodigy, his power will only continue to grow as he continues to get older. Sadly, I don’t see Shinji becoming head captain for two reasons. The first is that while is is a good leader, the fact of the matter remains that he is a Visard that spent 100 years in the world of the living. We as fans know what he is trustworthy, but there will be many in central 46 that will be unable to look past his hollow powers. The other is a question of power. Shinji is strong, but without his hollow mask I don’t think he quite matches up to Byakuya, or the potential Toshiro possesses. Plus, they both have total freedom and control over their Bankai, and can use it as a means to defend the soul society. Shinji quite literally can’t use his Bankai because it is a detriment to his allies. Idk if he can control that with training, but it would be deemed too much of a risk.

While it's very often overlooked and ignored character as he's not super flashy battler with dozens of achievements and is not favoured by Kubo or fans... I can see Iba being good candidate? His early ways of being level headed all-rounder that was willing to try his hands at every aspect of being Shinigami gives him a lot of insight into Soul Society's workings and just general wisdom. He also showed some kinds of leader skills when he pretty accurately pointed out issues with Ikkaku hiding his Bankai. We obviously never got to see his potential in fight but solely on the experience with how Seireitei works and charisma I can see him doing good job there. It would also fits with subtle character development that Kubo try to paint for Iba - a reasonable jack-of-all-trades that is willing to experience and try everything succeeds thanks to practical wisdom, even if he's not standing out in any particular category.

My thoughts: Kenpachi is a good pick. He's very much an old time Yama. Being in it for battles. But he has lots of room to grow. And could take a similar route as Yama with a dojo to train his competition. Plus he has a luitenant who hides his bankai, similar to Yama and his second. Toshiro, young but nature. Very astute to trying to solve problems in different ways. Like going back to basics, or combining with his luitenant. And it makes a nice switch from Fire Yama to Ice Yama Shinji, got a lot of experience being a leader. And it would be a nice break in the laws to have hollow shinigami leader. He also has an amazing bankai for if there is a war in future. Just send ONLY shinji. Byakuya is a bad choice. He's much too traditional and stoic. In my eyes, nepotism for the noble house is a bad thing.

That's probably the fairest candidates. Whoever might take the next position after kyoraku (be it Shinji or byakuya). At the very least we can agree that Toshiro is being nurtured to take up the mantle of the captain commander for quite some time. The points he lacks is the lack of his own personal growth and battle experiences, and he is given massive opportunities in every arc to develop on these, so that by the time he's grown and matured up, he can take up the mantle as the next prominent Captain Commander like Yamamoto himself. He, in many aspects, looks like the 2nd coming of Yama, but minus the evil side.

If I had to choose it would be between Toshiro and Byakuya. The only reason I would give it to Toshiro is because I dont think Soul Society would want any of the 4 Noble Families as head captain simply because they got too much power already especially on the political side, such as Central 46 and also due to the original sin. Huh, didnt know Kyoraku said that about Byakuya in CFYOW. Shinji would be a good candidate but I agree with the reason that Soul Society is not yet ready to accept Vizards to such a degree so soon. Also Shinji's personality just screams to me that he would be vehemently reluctant to take it. Toshiro is still a bit of a hot head at moments but I'm sure it will level out more in time All 3 clearly have experience leading soldiers as evidence of their captaincy. In addition Shinji has experience leading the Vizards and Byakuya, as head of the Kuchiki family. Although Byakuya has changed significantly since the start, it still shows evidence in his history that personal ties will not deter executing policies and laws. So he is willing to do the unfortunate for society's sake...be it assisting in the execution of his step sister, uncle (non-cannon), executing his lieutenant, or assisting a friend even if all evidence states the person as a criminal or friend (Fullbringer Arc)

I don't think the 100-year time Shunsui gave was a measurement of power but of growth. He's not underselling his power, but instead highlighting how quickly Toshiro will reach his level and surpass it. If he's saying it took him, let's say 300 years to reach his level, he's saying Toshiro can do it in a mere 150. And Shunsui himself is a genius level talent. This is just reaffirming Toshiro's talent and potential.

Another mirror would be with him being youngest their age gap probably best replicates Shunsui to Yamamoto meaning that when Shunsui is old and ready to step down or kick the bucket, Hitsugaya would be the new him, likely in his absolute prime which is hinted to be beholden to such a huge potential. Byakuya and Toshiro seem like the only 2 choices. Those 2 and Zaraki are the only ones with the potential to surpass Yama (Kenpachi confirmed already did in CFYOW, Toshiro and Byakuya have implications but not confirmations), and have already surpassed Kyoraku Byakuya and Toshiro are the more level headed ones. Toshiro never lost his cool post Timeskip, and even learned from Aizen’s baiting and trash talking tactics, using them against Yuki and Gerard to provoke them into making mistakes or getting under their skin. Him and Yama’s emotional maturity reversed roles pre and post Timeskip Byakuya is pretty self explanatory, but ironically hasn’t really ever showed leadership skills per say, as he always seemed distant from his squad and even LT

Byakuya, especially after TYBW. Royal family, trained in the Soul Palace, and has enough tactician experience combined with a poised attitude to lead the Gotei 13. If not him Hitsugaya is definitely next. Strongest ice type sword, an array of abilities and combat experience, plus his adult form for the short time we get to see it is vastly overpowered.
