Now the Mark -5 is a Mark 7 thru the conversion kit. Ever since I got the Mark-5, I have said when I need to finally lay down My tools, the Shop Smyth will be the last to go. But I am only 85 now and use the Shop Smith every day that I can !!! Thank You both so very much and may The good Lord keep You working wood and talking Shop Smith for a long time to come !!! My Dad bought his first one in about 1962. I bought mine in 1981. Dad Bought a second sometime in the 90s. I bought one for my son in the 10s. I now have four of them with the accessories. They mostly sit in storage in a very dry barn. I use one in my new shop as a lathe and utility machine. Some sand bags hung ina box on the frame help to dampen the vibration. I built a good chunk of our furniture on the Shopsmith while living in suburbia confined to a city lot. I now live back on the farm and have a 2,000 square foot shop that includes a high lift, machine shop, welding bay and climate controlled wood shop. I hope to live long enough to enjoy it; the problem is that there are so many other things to do now. My dedicated tools easier to use and safer but still hold on to the Shopsmth. These guys are youngsters by comparison to our family association with Shopsmith but I'm sure they are very good wood workers.

Scott, when you were talking about what tool that's out of production you wanted to be brought back, I immediately thought OVERARM ROUTER!! I bought my first one in the late 1980's/early 90's, used, right from the Shopsmith store in Dayton. I had to sell it many years later. About 10 years ago, I bought one NOS off ebay and mounted it to a Kreg bench system. When Covid-19 hit, I set it up to rout slots in 1/4" plexiglass sheets for desk-top dividers for a school I contract with. I saved them a ton of money since I didn't have to add in the overhead of an expensive CNC machine I don't have.

50 years ago when I bought my Mark 5 new, 😅the number one reason to buy was the extremely competitive cost for entry to the world of wood working. Today, cost would prevent that same decision, and that is a shame considering the quality and versatility that you lose.😢

Thankfully there are many, many used Mark V's still on the market for folks who are looking for a deal. That's the double edge sword that Shopsmith of today has to contend with. They aren't just selling against inexpensive Chinese tools, but they are competing against their own products on the used market.

Don't know if that's real or not, but it would be nice to do longer stock on lathe work. I watched that Stumpy Numbs video and interpreted that you had to pick one or the other. I live in TN and it was at a big name motel chain I believe in Brentwood, TN where the events took place. Too bad that they do not do the travelling academies anymore as the opportunity to meet new folks that have or are going to get a shopsmith. I have also viewed the zoom demos as well and always come away with something new that I didn't know before. I probably enjoy the lathe portion of my SS as well, making projects for gifts or orders from folks. Like Doug, I also really like the carbide chisels, so much quicker just rotating the blade or putting a new one on instead of sharpening the older style chisels.

Just bought a 2nd SS. It’s a Mark 5 with 510 upgrade. Came with a lot of saw blades, lathe duplicator, many shaping blades as well as the SS mounted planer & the DC3300 dust collector that needs a new filter hood. $500!!!! I watched a few of Doug’s vidz earlier today & here he is with you. 👍. The 510 table is a giant improvement over my Mark V from 1983. The dust collection for the table saw & disk sander is a great improvement. I need to go on eBay for 2 telescopic poles & shaper fence for 510. It came with the mark 5 shaper fence which I needed for my Mark V anyways. Do I need or should want the 510 shaper fence? Great interview Scott!!!!!
@MyGrowthRings3 жыл бұрын
WOW! $500 is a steal! As for the fence, if you use the shaper or drum sander you'll appreciate the 510 shaper fence, otherwise you can modify the 500 shaper fence to work on the 510 table. There's a template floating around somewhere that will guide you through drilling two holes through the casting that will allow the 500 fence to bolt to the table, as the 510/20 fence now mounts. Thanks. I have learned a lot from the two of you. Even after owning 3 machines and several years of use I stil pick up pointers. What concerns me is where does Shopsmith go? On one hand the strength is that a 60+ year old machine is just about as good and useful as a new one. On the other hand that is a problem for Shopsmith. E.g. I got a Greenie for $50. It was jammed but not damaged. I spent about $120 for new bearings and belts, cleaned it and adjusted it. Almost as good as new now. (How long will the motor last is the only concern.) I probably will sell it for a fairly low price. So how to justify $4,000+ for a new one?

We actually talked a bit more on that though I edited it out because it was too much of me talking. I like carbide tools for hogging out stock and getting down to business, but I prefer HSS tools for finesse. Scott

Why didn't Shopsmith ever develop a thickness sander. I built one out of wood (using the lathe function) and it works great! Its not complicated.

Michael, they looked into it but I believe they dropped the idea because they determined that the market was just too limited. Scott

Scott,you didn’t mention the Jointmatic as a tool that you’re sorry Shopsmith no longer make. I’m still waiting for your big reveal of what you would use in preference to that.

Yeah, in retrospect I'm surprised too. The problem was it was an off the cuff question that even I hadn't given much thought to. Scott

I hope that Doug can get Shopsmith to hire him to remake the old Shopsmith Sawdust sessions. These are so old, fuzzy and hard to watch. These videos can be a great marketing tool.

When you consider that those were all made live using the technology we had available 20 years ago, it's surprising they were useable for as long as they were.

@@MyGrowthRings Sure, I am not dismissing the old videos and they are still very useful but it will be wonderful if they made new ones using newer technology.

@@AviSchwartz1 I understand and agree.

When it comes to changing from one tool to other I’m a hobbyist woodworker, I define a hobby as doing something you enjoy that fills up your spare time.
