This song was released in 1980. The 2 couples in ABBA were married. Both marriages were breaking up at the same time. Agnetha (blonde) was married to Bjorn (blonde). Anni-Frid (brunette) was married to Benny (brunette). Agnetha and Bjorn divorced in 1980. Anni-Frid and Benny divorced in 1981. ABBA member Bjorn wrote this after separating from wife and fellow band member, Agnetha Fältskog. It's about a divorce where one person doesn't want to separate and clings desperately to the marriage. It put Agnetha in the strange spot of being asked to sing a breakup song written by her ex-husband. "I had this image of a man walking through an empty house with all the furniture removed for the last time as the symbol of divorce and just describing what I see." Bjorn has said that while he usually didn't use drugs or alcohol while writing, he had a bottle of brandy next to him while writing the lyrics for this song. It was very personal to him. He told The London Times March 26, 2010: "Usually it's not a good idea to write when you're drunk, but it all came out on that one. By the time I wrote 'The gods may throw their dice' the bottle was empty."

If you watch the other video for this song (where they're on a stage) at one point you see Agnetha's (ex) husband briefly look over to her with the saddest look in his eye. Must've hurt to have to perform this song together.

@@shaundgb7367 A similar situation happened with No Doubt. Gwen and Tony were dating when the band first started. They broke up when they recorded Tragic Kingdom. Most of the songs on that album Gwen wrote about Tony. Imagine how they felt having to play those songs every concert. Then there's Fleetwood Mac. They all pushed through despite the break ups and divorces. How they do it, I don't know. I prefer not to see the ex after a break up but there is more to consider being in a group or band.

I don't have an explanation for it. I have never even been able to listen to either one of those songs in their entirety. I can listen to the other songs repeatedly, all day long, and never get sick of them. My favorite Abba songs are Winner Takes it All Super Trooper Fernando SOS Dancing Queen(used to be my favorite. But I may have overplayed it over the years to the point where I still love it, but replay it ten times when I play the video, like I so with their other songs. Knowing Me, Knowing you

It's a breakup song... written by the guys (Bjorn & Benny) of Abba, likely inspired by the experience of Bjorn and Agnetha's divorce in 1978. Shortly after this, the other couple Benny & Anni-Frid split up as well. The last 2 Abba records had a lot of sad & dark songs... Bjorn admitted that their breakups likely helped create their best music... From what I gather, Agnetha was very young when she met Bjorn and they fell in love, got married & had a child... But as Abba's popularity grew, they were expected to tour and Agnetha was not keen on that... and the pressure to deliver hits had Bjorn and Benny 'directing' Agnetha & Anni-Frid's vocals in the studio likely created tensions & negative feelings in their relationships. Bjorn said he and Agnetha tried to salvage their marriage and had another child, but they separated by 1978... but would still work together in Abba. Agnetha admitted it was a painful experience & likely contributed to Abba's eventual split. The lyrics say it all: "I don't want to talk about the things we've gone through..." - there's nothing left to say. We've both said & done everything we can to make this relationship work... but the time has come to take what u can and walk away...

the song is a breakup song, after Agnetha (the lead singer here) and Björn broke up. He wrote it, for her to sing. Björn has later claimed it wasnt about their breakup ("there was no winner or loser in our breakup"), but he also admitted to writing it deep in a bottle of booze right after the breakup ("by the time I wrote 'the gods may throw their dice' the bottle was empty") so I dont know whether to believe it had nothing to do with their breakup. That and the fact there were "quite a few tears in the studio" after they worked on it there. Agnetha has said it is a mix of her own and Björn's feelings about the breakup.
